There are several areas that can be discussed and adjustments made but only on the program itself. It is the most successful retirement plan in this country. No doors from the outside should be opened to it even if it is presented as just a small door. I have talked with several young people on this matter and how it is being presented that Social Security will become a burden on them in the future or not available. Of course, I have given my opinions on that. But, the answer that I have heard from them is that their parents or grandparents are living on Social Security and that they know without it their parents or grandparent would be a burden on them. That they would have to take care of them financially, not just physically. That is an encouraging interruption to me.
I am living on Social Security and my husband’s pension. And, thank goodness for that union pension because my husband has been turned down for early Social Security Disability. Without that pension, we would be a burden on our children and at this time they have enough to deal with on their own. I can tell you for a fact that without my SS and his pension we would lose our home (that just has 4 more yrs left on the mortgage)and living in our car with two very large dogs. Of course we could give up the dogs and take a $5 month cut maybe….BS! Early Social Security is not easy to get. Oh, he will get it. Yes, we had to hire an attorney. It is just a system in place to make sure none of us Baby Boomers are trying to take their “system”. Just like those drug tests will catch that one out of thousands applying for food stamps. Doesn’t matter how the innocents are suffering in the mean time. I feel so sorry for those not as fortunate as me. Sometimes it takes years to get it through. We are now a year into it. (I originally waited 2 years on mine and Kilgore 3+ yrs.) That is why I see even $5 a month could cause hardship and make the difference between tuna and cat food. (Until you are living on it, you will not understand the full extent. The cost of living does not go down and taxes never on us at the lower end!) Even though we are caught in the system at this time, I stand firm that Social Security should only be discussed separate and on its own merits. Never should it be used in a grand bargain unless that bargain in on Social Security alone.
Also, Bernie Sanders and 15 other Democrat senators sent a letter to the President on Feb 14 asking that SS be taken off the table where the budget was concerned. They were armed with hundreds of petitions with millions of signatures. The President and all of those Senators will never need Social Security in their old age. But, thankfully there are those still sticking to the Democratic principles that we need to take care of each other and not a select rich few.
