No AUTOPLAY! Yuck! Pisses me off every time I see one, and NEVER read/view them.

Just think about little plain jane box ads for members for a pittance a month or something, sort of as a courtesy thing.

Every little bit of cash flow helps.

Just a thought.

It’s an old habit. New software, I explore and test what it can do for me.

I was a beta tester for Windows before it came out, and I saw 8 different versions before ver. 3.0 was released. I destroyed about 6 of those versions through pocking around. I don’t think they liked me much!

In one of my many incarnations, I sold newspaper advertising for about 10 minutes. Wasn’t very good at it.

What I think you are talking about is very similar. We had what we called “Business Builder” ads for little tiny companies. A 1″ ad for $20 week, maybe three lines of copy. They were all together on a page of the paper.

Of course, the folks that run the Planet have an idea about what they are doing and how to do it, and I have no issue with that. I’m just riding along.

However, a simple box of such ads for members’ only for some small amount a month on the right side of the screen below the news feed would probably be easy to do and not interfere with the main point of the Planet. Personally, I wouldn’t allow links to anywhere or addresses or phone numbers. Probably email contacts only and a quick blurb about the business.

Now if the Planet WANTED to be more commercial about it, getting a percentage of any business generated would pay off for all concerned. Malls charge 5% of all gross sales by their tenents! Think about THAT one for a minute!

Just my opinion.

From a union worker family standpoint…

Here’s another point I like to make any time someone says that union contracts are unfair, or bad or whateveritis they say….

Um…. people…. contracts are TWO WAYS! They are signed by TWO PARTIES!

If you don’t like the contract, Mr. Schoolboard member, DON’T SIGN THE DAMNED THING!

Makes me crazy that companies or other entities enter into a negotiated contract with a union, then bitch about the terms of the contract THEY JUST SIGNED.

Sometimes I think people are just crazy…

choice – I think it all boils down to this for most folks…

“Companies give us jobs!”

They are terrified if companies are ‘attacked’ because they might lose thier job. It’s that simple.

Folks grouse and complain about the work they do, how they are treated, and what they have to do to survive day to day, but that’s the end of it. For most folks, that job and the financial ‘security’ it gives them makes them antithetical to anyone that might threaten it.

That’s my assessment.

There is a truth that needs saying as well.

My father was a union carpenter and a union millwright. He was president of the local carpenter’s union for over 20 years and president of the district labor council for nearly that long. I say that so people will understand I’m somewhat familiar with unions, although I have never been a member of one myself.

My dad always said that there are good union locals and bad ones. He was always all about the contract, trying to negotiate a fair wage, but it was much more important to him to make sure the GC’s were providing safety measures and accomodations for the crews, like portajohns and a place out of the weather to eat lunch. I mean, God forbid a man would have a private place to take a dump or eat his sandwich out of the rain or have safe scaffolding 50 feet in the air!

The local unions that he had disdain for were some of the mill unions that would go on strike for an additional $2 an hour and not budge, ending up on strike for months or years suntil their contract ran out, and then end up with no jobs. He thought they were fools and idiots. He always told me that when it came to the wage negotiations, you ask for 50 cents and take a quarter and move on.

Of course, no one ever saw anything in the papers about a one-day strike on the local GC building a retirement home to get the scaffolding right, but they were all over the issue about a mill being struck for months over a $2 pay increase.

And I think I can say that some unions pulling that sort of nonsense is what has given all unions a bad name over time in the minds of people. They only see the so-called greed of a union trying to get a huge wage increase in a town where jobs are scarce and pay is low to begin with, and never see a union fighting to make sure their members are safe against the greed or stupidity of a general contractor who wants to save a few bucks.

Somehow I have never equated measured intelligence (if that is what they are really measuring, after all… maybe a talent for taking tests?) with being smart or having that ephemeral quality of common sense.

My dad was HS graduate and a carpenter. He could literally design a house in his head and build it using no drawn plans. Always blew me away!

On the other hand, when I was in the military, one of my fellow instructors, who had a master’s in Electronic Engineering, couldn’t figure out how to use an electric can opener.

Point is, I believe we are all smart in some way, and way stupid in others, and it has nothing to do with native intelligence.

I view Joshua bin Joseph (Jesus to most people) as a radical Jewish rabbi, equivalent to Martin Luther. He was disgusted with the commercialization of his faith, did something about it, and got himself killed in the process.

And, in fact, if all accounts are true, he probably set himself up to be killed to make a point. Judas didn’t betray him, he went and told the authorities where Josh could be found so a spectacle could happen. Read that part of the New Testament carefully with that in mind, and see what I mean.

What we all refer to as ‘religion’ are the trappings of sprituality, tools if you will, to get to a place that many spritual leaders have tried to get us to – a place of understanding and meaning. They may be all correct, or God may be living in a shelter in Santa Monica.

My stance is that I don’t know. No one knows. Therefore, I am an agnostic. I can admit I have no idea, really, and anyone that says they absolutely know is… well, I’ll leave it there.
