Mumbly morning indeed 🙂 I thought we were suffering with extreme heat here in southern Ontario – at one point last week we had higher temps than some places in Indonesia, Egypt and Israel among others – but 50C is appalling! I’m tempted to say I’ll never complain about the heat again but my English upbringing just forces me to complain about weather!! Climate change at work or just el nino to blame? I think this is the harbinger of things to come. I pity those poor people in India and elsewhere. Proselytizing is just plain wrong – especially when it’s wrapped up in the comfort blanket of foreign aid and help to the less fortunate! I have no complaint with any religion – other than those who bastardize it’s precepts – but I sure as H E double-hockey sticks give short shrift to those who come to my front door clutching bibles in hand. Giving aid and comfort to the inflicted is a right and Christian (or Muslim or Hindu) thing to do – using that as an opportunity to convert those ‘heathen souls’ is just – well …. opportunistic! » Posted By Mightywoof On May 31, 2010 @ 5:25 am It’s about time something was done about the drinking problem in not just Scotland but the whole of GB. It’s a national pastime – young yobbos whose idea of a good night out is to get falling down drunk, at least in my day and I suspect not much has changed in the last 40 years! I couldn’t believe the drinking restrictions when I moved to Ontario – you couldn’t stand up with a drink in your hand in a pub/bar; if you wanted to move to another table you had to get the server to move your drinks for you; there was absolutely, under any circumstance, no drinking allowed outside anywhere; and if you were transporting alcohol of any kind it could not be a bottle that had been already opened and it had to be in a bag of some kind so nobody could see it! There is still, to this day, a dry area in Toronto but it’s the last of it’s kind and may even have been done away with by now. Ontario has become a lot more relaxed in it’s drinking standards but I would venture to say that responsible drinking has caught on in a big way – folks don’t drink and drive too much any more and getting falling down drunk seems to be disappearing as well. It really is sad about the repression of LGBT rights on the African continent – I also saw in one of the pics that rw protesters were out for a first ever gay pride parade in Bratislava. It seems sometimes that for every step forward made in human rights, somewhere in the world there are three gigantic steps backwards. Kids can do terrible, terrible things to each other, especially when they are unsupervised, but I do not think they have mens rea, a guilty mind, and neither do they have sufficient control of their emotions that one expects of an adult. To then treat them, and punish them, as adults is truly a mark of a society that is coming unglued. Why are the parents not held accountable for their childrens’ actions? They used to be at one time – do you remember, growing up in the UK, there used to be such a thing as a truant officer? If a kid skipped school, the truant officer would pay a visit and the parents would be held accountable – not the child! I’m sorry – this is something I’m so passionate about. I have no children, by choice, but I sometimes think a lot of people who have children really don’t like them at all. I have a philosphical abhorrence of trials for children that young. Yes, there should be consequences for behaviour like that but society nowadays seems to want to hurt children who hurt other children rather than trying to figure out the why’s and the appropriate treatment – is that too liberal of me? I’ve always felt that British society didn’t like children – especially after I saw how Italians treat their children with such abundant love – and it’s bothered me how that Western society bays for the blood of young children …. is there not enough bloodshed in this world to satisfy the mob that they need young blood as well? When did it become ‘normal’ to expect that children that young have the same concepts of right and wrong that an adult has. I really despair sometimes – normal childish misbehaviour has become criminalized. Whatever happened to the bobby on the beat giving the miscreants a cuff on the ear and threatening to tell their parents next time! It kept so many of us in line when we were growing up; we were not hauled into court for breaking a window or playing doctors and nurses. About the only good thing the new UK govt proposes is to scrap the national ID card – that’s such a fascist idea and it always apalled me that it came from a Labour government. It’s a bit tacky though that no refund will be given for those who already purchased them. Interesting commentary on the negotiations between the Brit pols as to who gets to govern. We’ve had ‘confidence and supply’ in Canada since the Tories won back in ’06 (?). It seems to work as the opposition parties don’t want to be the ones who cause the government to fall and another election to be held. Unfortunately it also leads to a lot of political gamesmanship. Under a parliamentary sytem the only thing that causes a government to fall is the budget being overturned (supply) – so, of course, everything the Tories want becomes a supply matter *rollseyes* . They are about to live in interesting times! That’s sad to hear about Lena Horne – I enjoyed listening to her.
