Pre-Islamic Arabian religion is indeed fascinating, and hard to pin down, exactly. But yes, contemporaneously, Islam had more rights extended to women than the other Abrahamic faiths. I might make the argument that Pre-Islamic Persia wasn’t too bad either, though I could be challenged on that I’m sure – and be forced to dust off my books. I’m not a Muslim either, my avatar here is a clue. And my avatar on HP is also a clue as to the interest which brought me to become fascinated with Iran many years ago. Everyone can be said to be full of contradictions. But Iranians, seen through the lens of Classical Persian poetry at least, are something else. Not fickle, but like the mirrors found in their shrines, able to refract many angles against each other in dazzling complexity all at once.
