Today, the regime bused in pro-government supporters. They said it was in the tens of thousands. Could have been, you don’t get more astroturf than this. And, quite frankly, it’s not like they had trouble getting a permit to gather, or were blocked in getting there. Were fed, as well. One website that published photos of the alleged smaller size got taken down really quick. The one thing we can confirm outside of Iran is how quickly sites get taken down, and from there we can discern certain motives. The Iranian blogger I follow hasn’t posted anything. They’ve been more sporadic. Could be completely unrelated and like any one of us, events from their personal lives could be dictating that. But internet crawls (which are still at the same levels, reportedly) also make it difficult. Biggest rumor. IRNA (Iran’s official state-funded wire service) said that Mousavi and Karroubi had fled Tehran to Mazanderan Province in the north (mentioning this area can also have other undertones which I can get into some other time). Karroubi’s son denied the story and said they’re still both in Tehran as has the Mousavi camp. There’s oodles of speculation on if it was floated or not for a specific purpose. It, of course, described them as “leaders of the sedition”. Also rumors they were taken by VEVAK or Pasdaran intelligence into “protective custody”. The authorities have changed their story of deaths, that they were “struck by hard objects” – i.e. a wayward stone. Not too subtle. Who knows, good propaganda is always at least possible. But they tend to often change, or have conflicting stories regarding suspicious deaths. Maybe they don’t have good message discipline, or, just maybe they’re liars.
