HuffNo Friday – Topic of the Night – Which Way Afghanistan?

Is Afghanistan really a country? Can it be governed?

I agree with Quark, that the Tali is a threat. Recognizing a thing being a threat is not the same as advocating a massive military action.

I think only half a million could not even remotely get the job done. We had that many in the Nam and the Vietnames kicked our ass up one side and down another.

But I am uncomfortable with an idea of just running away. I want the potential to hit the deranged religious extremists to remain. But how are we to do that? I would not care if we respect their “sovereignty”, as long as we did not have a large foot print there.

If we could be based in another Stan, we could get a strike force in and out quickly. But we could not sustain a large force, and we need to realize that no matter where we maintain troops, they will attract attack.

I would like very much to see the Israelis come to the table with the Palis, and I could care less about the Palis shooting rockets at the Israelis. We Americans lynched Tories during the revolution. The Israeli state was produced in no small part by the Jews conducting the first modern campaign of terror against the Brits (letter bombs in Britain). Nobody gets to pretend to stink-free chit. The two state solution needs to move forward, in order to give the deranged religious extremists one less propaganda point to whip up hatred against us.

So many more thoughts. This is ugly beyond consideration. Ugly complex.

Blissfully, I missed this one.

And you missed a point I was making on another thread.

I was saying that Afghanistan IS a law enforcement issue first. Not that it is neither a law enforcement nor military issue.

And as my brother the CIA agent would say to you, even after you get the intelligence and build the case, you gotta have guys with guns who are able to go get the bad guys.

The Texas Rangers are not going to go arrest bin Laden, should we ever again know where he is.

I’d be OK with a few thousand special forces forward deployed, going in and ki lling the more deranged of the deranged religious extremists. (Look at that! I split killing out of habit!)

I will defy anyone to seriously say that we have no reason to be concerned with developments in Afghanistan. I also agree that currently Paki is rightly a larger concern, and that we should reverse the proportions on our expenditures in the two countires.

The ugly truth, however, is that they really are countries only in the most formal meaning of the word. Both are teetering on failed state status. And look how well that is working for the world in Somalia.

Anyone got a good PLAN for stabilizing Somalia? Or do I not get to say that Somalia is a problem, seeing as I do not have a PLAN?

He mal-understood me to say that Afghanistan is NEITHER a law enforcement nor a military issue.

I was saying that Afghanistan IS a law enforcement issue.
