Now that I think of it, perhaps part of the failure of HillaryCare was the animosity between the Clintons and Ted. Ted detested the Clintons, apparently.

Oh, one thing that I might have clarified is that this business of my state’s pols all looking to see how this will improve their earning power a decade hence, is the whole bullshit idea of term limits.

Now, if someone was to suggest that my state’s legislators should be restricted to no more than 20 years in office, hey, I could see that.

But six years? What utter crap.

Mexico has term limits. The legislators in Mexico are limited to ONE term. And we all know how well governed Mexico is. Cough.

I knew Obama was a relatively average politician long ago. And I am comfortable with that. If he is more honest that Bill Clinton, then I am good to go.

Hey, Jason Riteman was interviewed today by Larry Mantle of KPCC. Larry, as I trust you know, is very good. And I was delighted with Jason. He was remarkably un-affected. Like you could actually stand to have his ego in the room with you.

Good. A little dry irony. I like that. It is my stock in trade. Gets me in trouble at times.

However, if I let you think that I was waiting for a saint to get elected president, you have not been reading my comments very closely over the last few years.

I do not think there will ever be a politician for whom I have a blind worship/loyalty. Obama was on track, then he voted yes to Teleco immunity.

That was political cowardice. He could have voted no. It would have cost him votes in Nov, and that was why he voted yes. He did not vote yes because he thought it was the right thing to do for the nation.

I’m happy as a clam that he is president. I am not under the delusion that he is perfect.

Embrace Change

The Nobel is a funny thing. You gotta believe that Obama wishes that they had never thought to give it to him. Lord knows, there is more than enough of a narrative of Obama being able to walk on water, and no politician wants too much of that. Next thing people will be expecting you to walk on water.

The real treat is to see how the asshole reactionaries have reacted to the prize. Clearly this is the Europeans thanking America for not giving BushCo a third term. And the reactionaries just don’t get it. The world is tired of the US strutting around, claiming a right to order the world. The World is resenting it. One needs only look at the world wide opinion polls of America. We were real popular in 2000. We inspired nothing but fear and loathing in 2007.

And somehow the reactionaries think it is GOOD to have the world terrified of us. Which, I suppose, is what makes them reactionaries.

All that said, I am a fan of the president, but I do not genuflect at the mention of his name. He fucked me on the teleco immunity vote. And he is doing all he can to maintain the executive privileges gifted to him by BushCo. Just one example: his Justice Dept just filed a brief asking that the civil suit against John Yoo, with the argument that it would undermine the ability of govt lawyers to give full and frank advice to the executive.

Even if that advice is how to commit war crimes and get away with it.

Obama is a good man. But he is no saint. He is a politician, fully prepared to make the compromises necessary to maintain his power. That is what they do. I’m OK with that.

I would prefer that our definition of ourselves not reference Huff at all.

A long time ago, a co-worker (not a very bright guy) said to me “I’m smarter than you think I am”.

I told him that that was not the proudest boast a man could make.

Being the #1 alternative to Huff means being better than Huff. Shit. I don’t think that is a very proud ambition, considering the low esteem in which we hold Huff.

I gotta say, it sometimes is good for a laugh, but to get upset about it, what is the point?

The Planet is not the anti not to be named.

The Planet is not a refuge, it is not a therapy session, it is not a social club.

It is a place where semi-serious bloggers are invited to come and discuss the issues of the day, culture, art, food, music. If I can get into the occasional lively debate, so much the better.

There are bloggers out there I will be happy to never see again. And if they were to show up here, I am certain that they would violate the rules such that they would be neutralized.

I say, let’s all move the hell on.

Why would I bother to author anything here if this is the stratospheric level that the planet is achieving?

Yes, I am sick to death of people crying about not getting the pony they were not promised. I want to remind people of just what little the Clintons actually delivered. DADT, DOMA, HillaryCare.

Sure, peace and prosperity are all well and good. But the Clintons triangulated right into being Republican lite. I don’t think Obama is going to be WORSE.

I would like to see the president be a bit more combative, but I am not in the room, so I need to trust them.
