It’s not expectations about the quality of the speech but the know-it-alls get pissed when their predictions of what they think should be in the speech are wrong. Again this speech will be the kind of pivot people remember years to come because Obama will follow through with more speeches and most importantly policy. I see from Andrew Sullivan who liked that speech mostly because Obama mentioned he wanted to follow the guidelines of his bipartisan debt commission that his readers really liked the speech because it did frame the two different visions of America so well. On this essential point his oratory was as lofty and inspiring as ever. If you buy into the reality that government is not the problem and can be the solution when all other avenues don’t exist it was his most effective speech in a while. Moreover this philosophy was born out with his actions during his first term. Despite what Republicans say now the only entity that could have saved the auto industry was government. Otherwise not only a million jobs would be lost but many more. He also pointed out that government is not for the benefit of corporate and special interests, it’s for the benefit of people and it can only be that way if people participate in their civic duties. Obama understood that getting everyone access to affordable healthcare was the same type of task that the private market could not do on it’s one as well. For thirty years every president before Obama including Clinton demonized government. Remember it was Clinton who called big government dead. Government needs to be exactly the size it needs to be to service it’s people. The insanity of those against ‘big government’ just don’t understand we have a huge nation both from a population and geographical standpoint. It’s utterly childish to think a bare-bones government can service the needs of it’s people. The ironic part is people know this from empirical evidence. For example if a company like Apple has an amazing new technology like an iPad, no one questions the size Apple needs to be to introduce that product to the mass marketplace. No one says Apple needs to downsize so people can’t have access to iPads with no logical reason to downsize. So for people to question the size that government needs to be to provide seniors healthcare and everyone access to healthcare of course it needs to be a huge endeavor. FFS it’s 1/6 of the economy. As citizens, we understand that America is not about what can be done for us. It’s about what can be done by us, together, through the hard and frustrating but necessary work of self-government. So you see, the election four years ago wasn’t about me. It was about you. My fellow citizens – you were the change. I know some cynical pundits don’t get this but they never get Obama’s long game. The biggest reason I would never vote for Willard is #2, all the lies he tells. With Ryan echoing those lies it makes the choice more obvious. To me like I said in an early post the ability to tell the truth is the absolute start of where a person’s character starts. I mean normal political spin is one thing but time and time again I see Romney and Ryan lie and many times they even choose the lie over a truth that would be more effective. With GWB we saw where lies lead and the result was hundreds of thousands of needless lives lost. I’m glad you brought up #3. Romney has run a terrible campaign, especially considering the money advantage he’s had. Allot of it has to do with the fact that Romney’s intellect is overrated and he’s had such an insulated life that he lacks true wisdom. Just today he made a major gaffe that showed the true Romney when he called the country a ‘company’. It exemplifies the fact that he does not even understand the basic rolls and other differences between government and business. Then tack on while he makes an amazing ignorant joke about Climate Change when talking to Jindal he actually asked “Did the water come from the sky, or the rivers, or the ocean?” That’s a question an insurance adjuster would ask to avoid covering customers because where the water damage comes from is covered by different riders. But it’s probably worse than that because if Jidnal answered sky or rivers than Romney would justify his denial of Climate Change even further. But Romney’s personal gaffes aside Romney’s aids are just a collection of recycled Bush and McCain lackeys. I’ve said it before and it applies now. The GOP loves to say government is bad because it’s the perfect self fulfilling prophecy for them since they are so bad at governing. At least they use to be competent enough to run effective campaigns but now it seems they can’t even do that. On the point #1 all I can say is for most GOP voters it’s become the white identity party. That’s why GOP leaders don’t need new ideas or even need to tell the truth. No matter what the GOP does or says a major swath of white, especially male and older voters will back them out of racial resentment. They view the Democrats as being some kind of diverse mongrel horde that needs to be stopped at all costs because God forbid all people in this country may have social and economic equality and the game will no longer be fixed. Just on the unemployment numbers alone the reelection of Obama would be unprecedented in the modern era by definition. Of course all elections have some unique aspects that still does not change that fact. I don’t create the reality. I know exactly the reasons that Obama is ahead right now but it does not change the other factors against him. Not to mention the bazzillion dollars the GOP is spending. Heck I’m not even criticizing the president’s campaign or telling him how to run it. He and his team are doing all they can. Now that would be a pessimist attitude. Right track/wrong track and unemployment figures usual decide elections and they is no way to candy coat that they are against Obama. I see consistently Obama behind on the question about who is better to handle the economy. Obama would have to break precedent to win based on the current economic environment. If Obama can keep this a character and demographic election he certainly has the advantages in droves over Romney. Then of course there’s the 800lb Billionaire in the room. His standing right now could not me more tenuous.
