Hi Choice–I’ve been a POV member for a couple years, but haven’t posted much. At least not for while.

I really enjoy trap & skeet (mostly skeet), with a bit of pheasant hunting from time to time. But at some of the events I would attend, I noticed a lot of boasting (by some) about their arsenals–along with their veiled, and not-so-veiled, reasons for having them. That’s when I decided to “upgrade” my collection. Would rather have ’em and not need ’em than to need ’em and not have ’em.

Also, thanks for understanding my usage of the term “Martinize.” I struggled with it at first, but I wanted the shortest route to making my point.

“A couple of people have asked about the safety of myself and my fellow progressive living here in the wilds….well, that is where our being known as practitioners of the 2nd Amendment comes in handy.”

Murph–I can relate. Even though I live in Chicago, I have been a 2nd Amendment practitioner for decades. More importantly, I have a Florida Concealed Weapon or Firearm License. I’ve had it for several years. I obtained the license because I use to travel a lot. And, my lifelong experiences have convinced me that there were/are a lot of Zimmermans out there just waiting for their opportunity to “Martinize” me. But that’s not my point.

The point I want to raise is Zimmerman’s televised lie about “stand your ground.” He claimed he never heard of it. I knew he was lying before any trial evidence to the contrary–testimony provided by his college law professor. I knew he was lying because George Zimmerman and I possess the same permit!

The application (and subsequent license) comes with extensive literature, which covers the Castle Doctrine… aka, no duty to retreat… aka, stand your ground. Further, the firearms training course we were required to take included comprehensive instruction on stand your ground, and its various iterations/monikers. Why the prosecution did not include this, and hammer it home, is beyond me?! I have my suspicions, though.

My soul aches for the Martin family.

My open letter to, well, open letters:

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
-William Ernest Henley

Mr. President,

You were my first choice–not my second or third. By far! In your acceptance speech on election night, you were quite clear in telling us all that your election does not automatically “make the change we seek.” “There’s still a lot of work to do,” you said. There would be starts and stops. The climb would be tough. You still need our help. That, if we did not get there in the first month, first year, or first term, you promised to never give up.

And despite the slings and arrows of outrageous chance, your head remains high, while you continue our fight. I wish I had your strength.

Like me, I am sure that most First Choicers did not walk away with any false expectations or false realities that autumn night–you never promised to walk on water. I am equally certain that NONE of us knew “How charged with punishments the scroll” would be. However, I have not lost sight of the absolute fact that scores of important presidential nominations have been held up by republicans. These nominees could be well on their way to delivering on many more of the promises you made. Too little attention is given to this by MSM (and naybobs). Instead, the focus is always on what you have not done. Or, some fake story about a so-called tea-bagging patriot. This is no accident; a fool I am not. They have been complicit in their spin, and their skin. I have yet to figure out what to do about MSM; but, I know what to do about the others. This is why I write.

The obstructionists have not tired in trying to determine your fate and thus, I will not weaken in your defense!

To be continued: November, 2012.

“In the beginning of a change the patriot is a scarce man, and brave, and hated and scorned. When his cause succeeds, the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a patriot.”

ghsts, I think I get the gist of your post. It surmises that you are not satisfied with his job because of a “to-do list.” That this president is no different from gw (or any past president) in this regard. That your expectations were greater than to-do lists achievements? And, you blame only yourself for the gap that exists between your promises filled versus promises achieved expectations–essentially, he is not doing the job you sent him there to do? I think you illustrated this position anecdotally (garage cleaning job). If I’m on target, then I must ask: what is the job you expected him to do?

If we can assume, for a moment, that the POTUS is not a dictator and thus, cannot legislate or adjudicate, then we must assume that he cannot correct this country’s ills all by himself. The healthcare package, for instance, is not the result of a failed promise; it is the result of a few spineless democratic, bluedog, and worthless republican LAW-makers. Obama realized early on that he didn’t have the votes for the “ideal package,” so he worked to not let perfect get in the way of good. What would you have done? Some of us blame him for this HCR package, I and others blame the LAW-makers I mentioned. In either case, it is clear here that he could not do it all by himself. A constitutional lawyer and scholar I am not, and despite staying in a Holiday Inn last night, I didn’t become one after Barack Obama was elected POTUS. Therefore, I will trust his vision on what the final HCR package will one day look like. Remember, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was not the end-all-be-all. There were subsequent bills and amendments, providing more teeth to the civil rights laws we have today.

I agree with you about the expectations we all have placed on President Obama–the likes of which I have not seen placed on any before him. I disagree with your to-do list assertion. I believe many of the items to be substantive to monumental in nature. I also disagree with the assertion that people like me are apt to look at his achievements as a glass half full of Obama Kool-Aid. Not me. I will forever ask what more could have been done, were it not for the obstructionists. Where would this country be if the scores (at one time hundreds) of his executive and judicial nominees were not held up–some of them for years. You know, the people required to get our business done. President Obama is not holding them back. That’s because he and those of us who refuse to forget our civics’ lessons know, he cannot plausibly or constitutionally do it all by himself.
