Great idea, Jan! I love it!

Adlib, absolutely! I loved the new graphic you did with the 2001 poster. I think that would look great on a tee shirt!

That is what I am picking up on as I read other’s work. It’s the passion that shines through them all!

Well said, Abby! I agree!

» Posted By Emerald1943 On January 5, 2010 @ 8:32 am

Hey AB! Glad to see you this morning!

Having only joined the Planet one month ago, I’ve got a lot of reading to do here. This is rather daunting even to me. I am pretty much retired and don’t have many pressing responsibilities like you do! I believe you should just stick to the articles themselves, although I do agree about the comments being informative…but that’s waaaay too much for somebody with your schedule!

In fact, today is my “one month anniversary” on Planet! My family thinks I’ve gone off the deep end! The Planet is all I talk about!

Morning, Adlib!

Just as the Republicans say, vote and vote often! πŸ™‚

Just a little note…I am completely humbled that my paltry efforts were included when there are so many really great writers here. I just wanted you to know how much I appreciate being included! πŸ™‚

» Posted By Emerald1943 On January 5, 2010 @ 8:21 am

You just got another “thumbs up”! πŸ™‚

» Posted By Emerald1943 On January 4, 2010 @ 7:21 pm

Something occurred to me….I’ve got a lot of reading to do! πŸ™‚

Congratulations to all those on the list! We’ve got some amazing writers here!

Obama and The Google

Hey javaz! Where do they find these guys? I just hope that the Democrat running against him will use this in campaign advertising! In fact, the DNC should be collecting these “tidbits” to use in the upcoming election!

» Posted By Emerald1943 On January 4, 2010 @ 2:34 pm

You may have to wait! LOL The more research I do, the more there is to do! This subject is much broader than I thought. I certainly want to do it justice…and I would never want to embarrass Sue either! There are lots and lots of scurrying cockroaches in those dark corners!!

» Posted By Emerald1943 On January 3, 2010 @ 6:27 pm

You are right about showing the Right as ugly! But the image is the kind of thing that sticks in people’s minds. You know what they say…”A picture is worth a thousand words” and just the image of the President as subservient to a right-wing loony is almost a subliminal thing, never mind the blatant racism!

Hi Scheherazade! I’m glad to see you here!

I am embarrassed to admit that I had never looked at the Google News site before! (I just THOUGHT I was a news junkie!)
Thanks so much for turning me on to it! I always liked the BBC because their take seems to sometimes be quite different that what we are being fed on the MSM here in this country.

BTW, just a mention here of the excellent program that Christiane Amanpour did on radical Islam in Great Britain. If any of you didn’t see it, it’s certainly worth a look. There are some hard-core radicals there. Abby had mentioned it in a comment she made about their insistence on sharia law in the UK. Sorry I could not find the link to it, but I’m sure they will replay it on CNN.

Sorry to be so late in replying to your post, Cher, but I was tied up elsewhere. That would be an excellent topic for someone. I remember hearing that FDR’s biggest problem was that he caved in to the right-wingers of his time and didn’t do enough in the recovery, that he let up too soon. I’d love to know more about this. I’d do it myself, but I’m working on a pretty extensive article now in collaboration with SueinCa about the C Street family. So many topics…so little time! πŸ™‚

Hey boomer! I am a die-hard Stewart/Colbert fan and try to never miss their shows. But I read, not too long ago, that a lot of young people in this country get their news from these two. While I guess that any truthfulness in the news is good, I wonder how much depth that these young people have on the issues. It concerns me a little that they do not have a good understanding of the issues that they should have. While I think that putting news into a comic setting is fun, the issues that we face now are certainly not funny and IMHO require more than the superficial treatment afforded them by my two favorite comics.

Hey Jan, a most hearty welcome to you! I have a feeling that you are going to be a great asset to the Planet!

If you can bring like-minded friends to the site, please do so! The more, the merrier! I look forward to your writing for us! πŸ™‚

Hey cher! Glad to see you! Did anyone get that picture that was posted on HP in the last two days with President Obama shining Palin’s shoes? Dog, that made me so angry!!!!

I know HP didn’t actually DO the photo…some racist somewhere photo-shopped it and got into trouble for sending it out in an email, but IMHO, they should have left that one off of the front page at HP.

» Posted By Emerald1943 On January 3, 2010 @ 4:41 pm

Oh wow! Count me in!!! What can I do to help?

And Jan, a warm welcome to you! I am sure that you will find some of the most wonderful and intelligent people in the world here at the Planet! They are just simply the BEST!

» Posted By Emerald1943 On January 3, 2010 @ 4:37 pm

Wow! Cher, you did an amazing amount of work to pull all this information together! Kudos to you for having the stamina to wade through all of it! I’m impressed!

I, for one, am so sick of the “talking heads” and their opinions that seem to be everywhere! If only we could get “just the facts”! But with the dumbing down of America (discussed last night on another thread), the average Fox watcher must have someone to tell them what to think. After all, it’s hard work to make up your mind! I really believe that people have become so lazy and apathetic that they have no problem allowing it.

Your news about the lack of an overall anti-Obama slant is encouraging. Let’s hope it continues that way.

The Infantilization of America

Thanks Khirad! Just like the Shrub said, “Fool me once….shame on me. Fool me twice….uh, we won’t get fooled again!” I have lots of trouble with these profound quotes! πŸ™‚

Hey Kes, never put off ’til tomorrow what you can put off today…or something like that! Procrastination is my middle name! πŸ™‚

Edit: I loved Tiger’s article! Thanks for the heads up!

He’s just a little too heavy to be doing jujitsu moves, IMO! LOL

» Posted By Emerald1943 On January 2, 2010 @ 1:51 pm

Hey J! I heard that this was a good show, but have never watched it…my own personal little boycott of regular network TV! I’ll have to see if it’s available “on demand” as a result of your recommendation.

» Posted By Emerald1943 On January 2, 2010 @ 1:24 pm

BRAVO, Kes! BRAVO! I laughed my buns off all the way through your wonderful, witty and insightful post!

This really would be funny if it were not so sad…and true. I got off on a rant yesterday about the “dumbing down of America” effort that was exponentially expanded during the years of the Shrub. I see college-age kids who apply to me for a job who are unable to fill out an employment application. They cannot spell or correctly punctuate. They are incapable of doing the most simple math problems without a calculator. They are practically functionally illiterate! And these kids have high school diplomas!

So I would answer your question with a resounding YES! These people DO need someone to tell them to wear a heavy coat, avoid the traffic, and beware of hot coffee (with the warning printed on the lid of the cup). Sad but true!

I also got on a rant, something about how we need to take all that money that we continue to pour down a hole in the sand for fossil fuels and unnecessary wars and spend it on educating our children! IMHO, we cannot start soon enough!

Made It Ma, Top Of The World…

Good points all, Tiger! But you can’t possibly expect “them” to do something that makes so much sense!! As far as guns are concerned, the genie is out of the bottle and we will never get guns off the streets. The ONLY solution is that control! But you know, as well as I do, that the republicans will come out with their hair on fire if gun control is even mentioned. “Thar goes our Second Amendment Rights”!! “See there, we told ya’ Obama was gonna’ take yur guns”! “It’s nothin’ but a gub-mint take-over!” etc., etc. ad infinitum!

If I were in charge, I would permanently and completely clean out Washington, D.C. of every single lobbyist working on behalf of ANY for-profit outfit! I would make it a felony for any Congressman or Senator to take ANY money or gifts from any for-profit company or lobbyist, or from any political action committee sponsored by a for-profit. I would immediately find a way to revoke corporate “personhood” which was the result of a clerical error to being with.
Those measures would go a long way, IMHO, to solving ALL the problems that we face in this country right now!

Very provocative article, Tiger! Good job!

A Newbie’s Take On PlanetPOV

The presence here of many friends from HP was what convinced me to hang around. What I wrote the other day bears repeating:

HP has lost more than they will ever know!

» Posted By Emerald1943 On January 2, 2010 @ 1:02 pm

Ditto! But I would say that we are more of a “center-left” country if we can get the rethugs out of the way. The American people are a good and generous people who, for the most part, do not mind social programs and legislation meant to help their neighbors. The rethugs have tried to make “left” a really bad word on a par with “commie pinko”, liberal, and the like. I hope I can live long enough to see a permanent shift to center-left! It’s up to us to make it so.

» Posted By Emerald1943 On January 2, 2010 @ 12:55 pm

Oh damn it! I can’t believe I missed it, especially in light of the fact that I was here ALL DAY!

» Posted By Emerald1943 On January 2, 2010 @ 12:35 pm

Great comment, Adlib! (As usual!!)

I especially liked your reference to those of us who have never written anything more than mostly one-liners over at HP. I looked back at my first post here and laughed, remembering how hesitant I was to hit that “publish” button. At the time, I thought that surely the editors here would never allow my drivel on such a sophisticated site.

Quite to the contrary, you and all the others have been nothing but encouraging! I am finding a NEED to write now! I want to tell everyone what I think…simply because I know it will be met with that respect and civil conversation. I find myself craving the exchange of views and look forward to every new post from the other members.

True, this is a place of riches, speaking both to our deepest beliefs and to the humorous in our lives. But this should not be an embarrassment at all! Let us relish these riches and the wonderful diversity of thought found here!

Excellent post, KQ!

I would agree with you about the schism on the left. A number of people have been concerned about just this issue…that we are “eating our own”. I hope at this point that those of us on the left will recognize the error made by the right-wing in splintering their own party. Their rabid 20 percenters are not enough to win elections, but I believe they fail to notice in their heated hatred of everything Obama.

We, as Dems or liberals or progressives, MUST stick together on the issues, and work doubly hard to get out the vote this coming November. If the Dems stay home, we will just be opening the door for the right-wing to again take control. And I believe that we all know how well that would work out for us!

Good post, my friend!
