President Hung in Effigy

I’m not just trying to get people to read my stuff, but I just posted a new article that concerns breaking news that is extremely important IMO.

I would ask you all to keep an eye on this situation…”Our Failed Intelligence” and I welcome your feedback and discussion.

Hating hatred is one of those cognitive dissonances that we sometimes have to battle.

I’ve been Buddhist for over 20 years, and I know my spiritual development is still lacking. I am having much difficulty with people who torture and kill innocent victims. Soooo, Cheney does not get my prayers. That’s gonna’ take a lot of work!

OK! I’ll take a look. Thanks! And BTW, I think that quote from Lewis is one of the most pertinent and pregnant lines of our time! I have this “thing” about the religious right, you see!

» Posted By Emerald1943 On January 4, 2010 @ 1:37 pm

Where did you find that, e-cat? I updated my profile to include the quotation from Sinclair Lewis, but after I did it, I couldn’t find it. Is it posted somewhere on this site?

Good comment, Nellie! It was amusing to see Carrie Prejean complaining vehemently about how her freedom of speech was being infringed upon after she made that stupid comment about “opposite marriage”. She has insisted that there has been a concentrated vendetta against her and that “they” were trying to suppress her First Amendment rights. The little blond nitwit doesn’t know her First Amendment from her a@@! But she’s not the only one who hasn’t a clue…Ms. Mooseburger from Wasilla has also misunderstood the Constitution. I would venture to say that she has never read it!

I agree with you, K. I am a supporter of MoveOn but I thought this was out of line and over the top. We don’t need to become that which we condemn in others.

That third person, it says in the article, was screened at the hotel with the rest of the Indian delegation. I don’t think that is nearly as bad (or dangerous) as people just able to walk into the White House with no vetting at all.

I do worry about the safety of the President and his family though. All we can do is pray that the Secret Service will do the job effectively!

Hey Javaz! I saw this too…pretty disgusting. But the racist/idiot could not even spell the “N” word correctly.

Did you check out the site for “The Washington Times”? There were a few good articles there. I made a mental note to check in with them periodically. All the comments that I saw were liberal points of view.

It’s not the just politics

Good mornin’, Kes! I’ve been trying to reply to your comment but my computer is totally weird this morning.

Just a quick question…how is your 85 yr. old patient? I was wondering about him.

US & UK Yemen Embassies Close

Thanks, Bernard, for your perspective. I expect that I am like a lot of other people who know very little about Yemen.

» Posted By Emerald1943 On January 3, 2010 @ 6:18 pm

Is this a cheap shot…or what? Anything to make it appear that the President is doing nothing in the fight against radical Islamists.

My first thought, when I saw the headline, was that this is the first step before troops are sent. Usually, embassies are closed and diplomats are recalled.

100 years of a national park done right

And another comment…I have noticed some trees in the higher elevations along the Parkway that show signs of it too. We have lost some trees on Grandfather and Beech Mtn. but not to the extent of Mt. Mitchell.

It may be Spring before I can get up there to take pictures that would be a necessity for anyone to understand. The roads up there are closed now. We have had some extremely heavy snow and ice that does not look like it’s going to melt any time soon. It’s only about 12 degrees here now, with a forecast low of 8 tonight. BRRR! When you add the wind chill, it is brutally cold. I checked the Grandfather weather station website and it is 3.2 degrees Farenheit now up on top! But it’s so beautiful with the rime ice. Everything is coated in sparkling white!

K, I cannot imagine trying to learn to drive a stick shift around here, and especially in bad weather! You should get her to post her story.

Asheville is a nice town, and I love the Biltmore. When I was a kid, I went to a camp just a few miles from Black Mountain, and it was there that I learned to love the mountains. I made up my mind at the ripe old age of about 10 that someday, I would live up here. In ’76, both my ex-hubby and I were so burned out from high-pressure jobs, so we pulled up stakes and came here to live. I have never regretted it for a minute!

I had planned to write an article here about Mt. Mitchell and the horrible thing that has happened up there. All the gorgeous giant hemlock and other evergreen trees are all dead from acid rain and air pollution. It is a sorry sight! I’ll have to get up there to take some pictures. You wouldn’t believe the terrible damage!

Hey KQ! Hope you’re feeling well today! I noticed your mention of the Blue Ridge of NC! I know I could work for the local chamber of commerce with my unashamed promotion of the area, but I truly love this neck of the woods!

I live about half a mile from the Blue Ridge Parkway (as the crow flies) and nothing is more pleasant than a picnic up there in the summer! There are several state parks, including Grandfather Mountain, with amazing views and wonderful hiking. I would truly love for everybody here to experience it! As a matter of fact, I am sitting in my living room right now, looking out my front window at Grandfather Mountain, covered in rime ice and snow. It is especially beautiful in the late afternoon sun.

You have an “open door” invitation for a visit! Just give me time to straighten up the house a little! 🙂

Nicely done, Pepe! This sounds like paradise to me. Since I live in the mountains, this over-running by tourists is a sore spot with me, although my little business is dependent on them and the money they bring into the area. Their road manners leave a lot to be desired!

We have mostly Florida tourists here who come up in the summer to avoid the sticky, hot weather down there. When I first moved here in ’76, we gave away our air conditioner unit. I still don’t have one…and don’t need one. It is delightfully cool here with a mountain breeze most summer days.

You would not be particularly impressed with our mountains…much less imposing than the peaks out there, but in their own way, equally as beautiful, very lush and green with an abundance of flora and fauna. I would love for you to come to North Carolina and experience the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Appalachian Trail for some top-flight hiking! From the sound of your article, I believe you would love it! In fact, perhaps we should consider having all you wonderful people come for a visit! I make a “killer” pot of pinto beans and cornbread! Everybody is welcome! 🙂

Edit: Pepe, I forgot to mention how beautiful those pictures are! You’ve got some talent there!

Guns, Knives, Hammers and Bricks*

Hey boomer! I just called my friend and her mom is still hanging in there. Her intra-cranial pressure is holding steady! That is great news and would indicate that the brain swelling is not worsening. The doctors asked for and received permission to put a tracheostomy in tomorrow morning. This will facilitate her care. She has been on a ventilator but the trach will make it easier.

As I said above, the fact that she has survived this long is a miracle…maybe all you beautiful PlanetPeople have pulled off another one! I can’t thank you all enough! And my friend is blown away over the responses from you all. She sends her most profound thanks to everyone!

Edit: I almost forgot to tell you that the police have called in the State Bureau of Investigation on the case. They believe there may have been a second person involved or that this second person was paid for the “hit”. The motive definitely was NOT robbery.

» Posted By Emerald1943 On January 3, 2010 @ 4:18 pm

Boomer asked me to put this reply into a comment so it would appear at the top of the thread. Just a little information on the condition of my friend’s mother…
===================================================
Hi boomer! I happened to see your comment. We are still hopeful that she will survive, but the doctors told my friend that she may be permanently brain damaged from her injuries. I am still in shock about all of this.

My friend thinks that her mother might have been trying to get rid of this guy. Perhaps she was afraid of him

» Posted By Emerald1943 On January 3, 2010 @ 3:44 pm

Will do! 🙂

» Posted By Emerald1943 On January 3, 2010 @ 3:34 pm

Hey boomer…good luck with getting them to stop. They have been pretty much raked over the coals for hate-mongering, but has it stopped them? They just continue every night, sometimes subtle and sometimes in your face. I would be the first person to jump up in defense of First Amendment rights, but I cannot stomach the lies they tell. Even though Fox got a court ruling saying it was OK to lie on their “news” programs, I think there should be some kind of moderation…maybe bringing back the “Fairness Doctrine”?

» Posted By Emerald1943 On January 3, 2010 @ 3:32 pm

Good comment, c-lady! I wrote about just that subject earlier today on this thread. What is it in our culture that causes the horrible violence, gun or otherwise? I question if it is the result of violence in the media that our kids are exposed to on a daily basis, or is it a lack of morals/ethics/values education? Is it greed or jealousy? Or does the entire country need to take “anger management” courses? Is there something hard-wired into the American brain that makes us susceptible to taking violent actions?

If there is any doubt about the anger, just check out the instances of “road rage” that are everywhere! We have no patience anymore, and our humanity is suffering for it.

My friend thinks that her mother might have been trying to get rid of this guy. Perhaps she was afraid of him…I don’t know, but they may have had an argument or something. Still, there is NO excuse for this! There was a large amount of cash in the house that was undisturbed. The guy told the police that it must have been a robbery, but yet the cash was still there…this doesn’t pass the smell test.

» Posted By Emerald1943 On January 3, 2010 @ 3:06 pm

Technically, no, we are not in a war zone. But the violence on our streets in our major cities would make one think that we are.

» Posted By Emerald1943 On January 3, 2010 @ 7:28 am

Good morning, all! It looks like things are in full swing here this morning! I am glad to see you all here, and I am most happy to see the diverse opinions. I believe we all learn from them.

We have a violent crime problem in the United States. The number of murders, armed robberies, rape, and other assaults is staggering. Our neighborhoods are not safe due to the influx of drugs and guns. One may even be a victim in their own home, due to a drive-by shooting or an attack by an intruder. Our children are not safe from violence even in the schools.

We cannot get control over the guns…the genie is out of the bottle. If guns are taken away from law abiding citizens, the criminals will be the only people with the weapons. There has been a steady flow of illegal weapons across our southern border for a long time, along with the drugs.

If we are to debate a philosophical issue, IMO it should be WHY we have the crime problem to begin with. I’m sure you all remember the “DC Sniper” of a few years ago…what could make a person kill so many people indiscriminately, and with such cold, deliberation and planning? What are the social issues that contribute to our murder rate? How can we address poverty and other issues of critical importance to people that drive many to commit violent crimes?

I do support strict gun control, but this is certainly no panacea to violent crime. Until we look at the issues surrounding crime in general, we just run in circles with our arguments. There will always be unstable people in our midst, but my question is whether there is some element in our society that makes them that way.

Abby, thanks for such a provocative article! Good goin’!

Vote Now for PlanetPOV’s Top Posts of 2009!

Well of course! LOL She’s probably already figured out how to make some money off the deal herself…stealing our designs, marketing shirts and coffee mugs.

Abby, I would not want to see our logo look too much like one of the “green” ones. There are lots of those out there. People might not pay much attention to it if we look like others, or they might think we are some kind of “Save the Planet” group.

We could always go to the old faithful,
“Bloggers ‘R Us!” LOL Just kidding! Really…I’m just kidding!

Abby, I agree! I really like that…”Join the Planet”!
with the URL underneath.

Jan, terrific site! I love the “tote bags”. I would think that would be a good product for the Planet with a cool logo!

Hey AB! That’s hilarious! ROTF!

Adlib and Jan, I would love to retail them for the Planet from my store!
