I was experimenting using the software controls to extrude hair. Which is hard to do–Unless you are Disney, Pixar, Industrial light and Majic, or James Cameron, who have million dollar computers, lol. I’ve got tons of 3D creations I rendered during the time I was learning to use the computer as a creative device. I did all of my models using Blender’s open source lightweight software. Which has improved a ton since I first used it. So I’ve heard. The only time it didn’t was when O.J.’s hand was said not to fit. The problem was real, a crack epidemic had hit the community, from rural small towns to the biggest of cities. Black America was suffering. The atmosphere was that of zero tolerance. I remember during the height of college spring break in Atlanta, known as Freaknik (started as a Greek fraternity Pic-Nic), when kids from colleges and HBCU’s all across the country would drive to the “Black Mecca” (as Atlanta was sometimes referred to as being) for a week of partying, socializing, car shows, young ladies dressed to arouse. Freaknik had no relations to drug activities or crime, these were, for the most part, college kids, or college age adults, celebrating spring and black life. And those looking to make some money selling T-Shirts and commemorative items. The street part got too big. Almost a quarter million young folk in the streets. Traffic became a nightmare, even at night. Law enforcement, including Black leadership, declared that something had to be done about freaknik, it had grown too large and didn’t have any structure, and it wasn’t sanctioned by the city. https://cdn2.atlantamagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2015/03/Freaknik_turner_4.jpg Freaknik 1994 So the state police (The State Patrol) and police jurisdiction started patrolling the state line and busting kids for traffic violations as they “raced” into town. As soon as a driver crossed the state line, on any interstate heading in to town, and their car fit the profile (yup they also did vehicular profiling), your risk of being pulled over and frisked escalated. If they saw you were from out of state and thought you were headed to the “pic nic”, and you were driving over the posted speed limit. They will not stop the other speeders, they are stopping you in your tell tale car. You were likely to be searched without cause. Sending a message, this must stop. And these kids had nothing to do with drive by shooting or the drug epidemic, but they were treated as though they did. Yeah, this is what poor execution looked like, but it fit the calling. The purpose of the law, supported by the Clintons and many in black leadership, was to curb criminal activity, but all they did was stir it, which fit well with the beliefs many not of the community had always held about black male youths. They got tough on the wrong ones, and created a new generation of men pissed off because they have been wronged and nobody seems to care that they were, because somebody had to pay for the rising gang activities and drug smuggling. Did they intend to fill the prisons with non-violent offenders? They will never say they did, but that is what happened. These unintended consequences, in my opinion, were very predictable and is why I can’t say it was just “bad execution”. They were throwing the zero tolerance people a bone, and they did so knowingly. The law was an unmitigated failure. They went after the wrong people. Something should have been done, but not that. They should have went after the drug lords and those in power who were being paid to look the other way, but no. They turned it into a black teen round-up show …with no mercy. We have a worst drug problem now, with unmatched overdoses and suicide like never seen before in history, death everywhere in West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, kids in all income levels, from the burbs to the sticks, but the users aren’t being profiled and they are not being arrested at anywhere near the rate of young black men of two and three decades ago –when I was in my prime–, nor are they being sentenced to unimaginable lengthy terms in prison. The double standard survives. If it is a problem that strikes the black community the way to fix it is with more policing and stiffer criminal justice actions.
