As you know, my husband is Chinese, and he was born and raised on Oahu. It is true– LAID BACK is such a Hawaiian characteristic! It might be the air there, the breezes. It’s like a giant exhale there. But about the multiracial aspect of Hawaii– I can’t really speak to that, but my husband claims that when he moved to the mainland (San Francisco when he was 21) he was shocked by how many Caucasians there were. There is a longer version that I couldn’t find that’s better and it tells the story. These two young guys saw a lion cub for sale at Harrod’s, in a cramped cage. They bought him and raised him– the local vicar allowed them to let Christian the lion play on the church grounds. After a year or so, they realized it was unfair to Christian to keep him, so they relocated him to an African preserve. A year or two went by. They wanted to see Christian again, even though the game warden warned them the the lion had reverted to his feral state and by now had a pride of his own, but they were undeterred. They searched for a few hours, until they saw a male lion approach. But unless Obama does something to energize the base, I think the elections will be squeakers at best. The Party out of office is always more energized anyway, and I really am very concerned that too many Dems will stay home. Jobs will help, but I don’t see the base excited about that. I disagree with the base on this, but I believe it is a real fact, whether I agree with them or not. What I DO see as critical is, as you say, reminding them of how very, very much worse the reptilians are.
