Looking at your MB headlines only – saw the one about the lonely walk to Gaza. The Blov was in Palestine in 2003, and actually TOOK A PHOTO of that very crossing. I was blown away. Thousands – THOUSANDS – of Palestinians get in line starting about 4AM to be forced through a cattle squeeze shoot. They start out about five people shoulder to shoulder, and narrow down to just one. This takes hours. Then they go work in a factory on the Israeli side- often working to make the cement used to make the wall – and then come night, reverse the process. Some of the people are in line by 4AM and home by 10PM. Some life, huh??? The Blov actually got a photograph of the inhumanity of it all. We sent Bito a slide show and hopefully now that things are quieter in this house, we can work with him to do a long presentation on the Planet. It stood my world upside down, and I had to rethink everything I had been told and taught. Not a bad thing, just a huge learning curve. He was given a desk, and is now being fought over by competing teams, all needing help and all without budgets for work study. Volunteerism is something ALL the Afghan students did well, and they loved it so much. The concept of volunteering is absent in a country where just to survive takes so much effort. I think it’s the one thing they all agreed upon as one of the greatest attributes of Americans. Sigh. Like many of the others, when confronted with such sad news, I can shut down easily, or spin trying to find my center. But when I flip the switch, and focus on what is good and true and positive, I find the peace within (and that helps me deal with the madness on the outside). One thing that always struck me about Canada was the lovely piece I have seen and shown my kids when I take them to Louisiana, about the French who came to Canada and then were sent packing south, and how they managed to end up in Louisiana. One instance where we did better, I guess. I so love Louisiana and the incredible amount of diversity it displays. I show the children how there is a state where a different language, food, music and culture are found and more- celebrated – and they look at me with a “Huh?” and remind me that Texas also has a separate language/food/music (Mexican). They do manage to concede that we don’t share a border with France as we do with Mexico (sadly, I can’t go there anymore because of the violence, but I hitchhiked through there in the 70s and spent several holidays like the 4th of July there in Monterrey while W. was in office). Ever since the shooting in AZ, I have wanted to go to LA to escape. Maybe I will. I’m wanting to send letters to Gov. Brewer and to the AZ state government and tell them I will carry gas cans next time I drive to CA so that I don’t have to spend one dime in their state.
