John Prine was in town to do a show the night before; I had never seen him before, although I had loved him for a decade. I was so disappointed in that his show was nothing like I had expected. I woke up the next morning to hear Stevie had passed. Guess that’s why John seemed a little flat. I met John many years later; he is a lovely human being and too funny. I loved watching his eyes sparkle as he swapped stories with friends…. I have many many friends who knew Steve well. Every single one of them only speak of him in the kindest tones, with loving praise. He was loved by so many people. AND – I loved the Beach Boys (Surfin’ Safari below). I was a red-hot (but flat chested) go-go girl in the 1960s. True. Danced at shows with Eric Burdon and the Animals, Billy Joe Royal, Lou Christie, Paul Revere and the Raiders, the Loving Spoonful. I had the moves, just not the parts. And yes, I had the fringe clothes, the mattress ticking bell bottoms, and the boots (covered zippers up the back, not exposed cheap zippers on the sides, please). I am not a “natural” mom, and my children seem to come packaged for me at about age 15. But I feel truly, truly blessed to have been able to “choose” such wonderful and wonderous human beings to be “mine”. Today I was awakened by a great cup of coffee from the Blov, and the Pup at the bedroom door, with a gift of bath salts and a sweet card. As any mother will agree, it’s the words and the cards that perhaps mean the most. My four legged “babies” all communicate with the Blov as the interpreter. My mom spent her life trying to take care of my sister (and yes, she DID like her best – but Daddy liked me best. We were lucky there were only two of us.) She was an excellent cook, cleaned the house like nobody’s bidness, and would iron my father’s clothes and hankies while watching “Edge of Night”. She fed and cleaned up after MY pets. She had a very loving heart, and was one of the sweetest souls on earth. I take more after my daddy, sorry to say. All moms are special, and to them all, I say “Congratulations to you. Look what a difference you made.” That being said, I am happy to have grown up in a time and a place where I had the choice of whether or not to bear children. For a woman who chose NOT to be a “real” mom, I’m thankful I’ve been given the chance to be the “American” mom to so many. And thanks, Bito for this lovely tribute to your mom. I just spoke with a student who said that what made him the VERY happiest was the fact an “Arab” was caught in Pakistan. He has spent the whole semester in Austin, doing research on Afghanistan and the complex relationship between AFG and PAK. Can’t wait to read it! I keep telling them: ‘Time will tell. Because if AFG and India ever formed a true alliance, Pakistan would be squeezed out like the zit on the world it’s ISI has allowed it to become. AFG serves a role as the 800 lb. gorilla for Pakistan in its Pashtun population and its dispute with India over Kashmir. It isn’t and never was a credible “partner”, any more than Karzai. State Dept. has suspended the YES program from AFG due to continuous exodus of students to Canada. This happened weeks (months?) ago. However, they are running short term programs now in India. In my no longer in touch with the powers that be mind, I think “Wow. This is great. It can further solidify a much needed alliance between AFG and India, which is very successful and a booming third world economy and a sign of what CAN be” (whether it should or not, due to the exodus of US jobs is an entirely different discussion). AFG has ALWAYS been a quandry for me. The only certain is that my kids are the best and brightest and I love them all very much. On that, there is no confusion. News from the ground in AFG for me is a mix of the Taliban’s announcement on Sunday of their spring offensive (happens every year) and a great sense of nervousness about what this could mean – and they are functioning WITHOUT Fox News. So far, one of my boys stated that his family told him a suicide bomber had been killed five blocks from his house (hard to verify). However, my Herati boy mentioned that the escaped Kandahari prisoners are now attacking people on the highway from Herat to Kabul. of course, Alpha Pup dealt with this phenomenon for years, on the road to Kabul from his hometown, which passed through a province heavily invested w/ Taliban. Again, while I do understand the joy everyone feels and the anticipation that this closes a chapter of our history and perhaps means we can close the war in AFG, for me it is much more personal and I have slept very little all night, watching for the kids family members and my actual kids. I have a request for the Planet. I have one more boy to try and extract before US forces DO leave. If anyone knows of any possible opportunities for college scholarships for a VERY smart, very nice young man, please contact the Admin and contact me directly. Economic times, and our efforts to help the one boy who is currently with us (he was home for the longest period of time – 3 1/2 , years) mean it is almost impossible for me to find him an opportunity by myself.
