Weekend Music Thread – Shine a Light

For me, this is one of those songs that just sweeps me in every time I hear it. Thanks for this one, Fergie!

Of course! Jeff Lynne was surprisingly accomplished for someone with lower name recognition than many of those he played with and produced. Very talented guy and ELO were unique.

Perfect choice! I’m kind of nostalgic for that era in these Trump-Covid-19 days but the past always looks better because it’s in the rear view.

I always prefer a live version in the Music Thread. Good pick!

Trump Flirts With Dropping Nukes on America to Wipe Out COVID-19

Yep, too stupid to be afraid of injecting Lysol into himself.

I did read an article that it’s all just bravado from Trump in public, that behind the scenes, he’s terrified that he’s going to lose in November as his numbers keep going down to just his core base of cultists.

And we should see less of them anyway after the unprotected protests, Lysol injections and swallowing of lit flashlights take their toll.

» Posted By AdLib On April 25, 2020 @ 4:19 pm

Since this isn’t THAT far away from him actually saying, I thought I’d tip it off more as it went on.

Thanks so much!

I’m also burnt out on his propaganda conferences, I haven’t watched them live for quite a while, just follow reports that make me glad I didn’t watch them.

But November is getting closer and closer, just over 6 months away. Just in time, before he really does blow up the entire country!

Thanks Steppenwolf! Just trying to return the favor, I really enjoyed your “Special Moment With Donald” post too!

And very flattering to be in the same sentence with The Smother Brothers, they were great! Thanks so much!

And BTW, thanks for the kind words!

Actually, I’d bet that Trump has already taken chloroquine already and is secretly worried about what he’s done to himself.

NewYabz is a private Facebook site, isn’t it?

How the MSM is Helping Trump Incite a Civil War

Good pick, I remember reading about Smith and her very prescient quote, even more meaningful today.

A big difference in the press back then and today is that most press is corporate-owned and has adversarial interests, serving the public and serving corporate shareholders.

So MSNBC, for example, refuses to stop broadcasting the literally dangerous propaganda episodes daily by Trump because they must serve the earnings and ratings for Comcast. Despite many hosts there and many viewers urging them to stop. Interestingly, CNN has cut away from the Trump segments and tuned back in when the medical officials are talking so that of course is very appreciated.

What is working in the favor of the majority who see Trump as the ignorant monster that he is, is that Trump has been self-destructing his facade of competence and responsibility during these daily broadcasts so the net result is that Trump is the only politician in America who has seen no long term bump and maybe even a decline in approval (while most governors are seeing a 60% – 80% approval of how they are handling the pandemic).

Some journalists are standing up to Trump, he’s undercutting himself and come November, the CBO predicts a loss of GDP around -5.6% and unemployment in around 16%: https://www.usnews.com/news/economy/articles/2020-04-24/cbo-coronavirus-will-keep-unemployment-north-of-10-this-year-and-next

And Trump thought he’d brag about the Obama economy he inherited to win re-election? Now what? Trump has no argument for 4 more years for anyone but his cultists and they’re not enough for him to win.

No president could win re-election with a pandemic they’ve helped create, 50,000 Americans dead and counting, 16% unemployment, a loss of 5.6% in GDP and plunged into a severe recession.

Trump may try some desperate things but he won’t survive this election as long as everyone goes out to vote as if their lives depend on it…since they do.

» Posted By AdLib On April 24, 2020 @ 4:32 pm

Thanks Steppenwolf!

Actually, it may only be a matter of weeks until these racist, hateful pawns of wealthy extremists including Trump, are thinned from the herd.

The cynicism is amazing, Trump and his wealthy klansmen don’t care that they are killing their supporters to advance their desperation of rescuing the economy and thus, Trump’s re-election chances.

But no matter how many sacrifices they make to their Demon of Greed, the economy is not going to rebound this year, not out of recession. So the people they’re killing is for marginal results if that.

More likely, these rallies of morons will cause a new round of self-isolation in the US, more in Red States. Which will make the economy worse.

And the bottom line is, except for the morons in Red states (many thoughtful people in Red states who are too smart to endanger themselves), when their economies are opened back up…most people are still not going to restaurants, movies, concerts, sports events or airports for a long time anyway because they will still be worried to do so. Even if the curve is bent, COVID-19 is still out there, infecting and killing people and a resurgence is likely too.

Trump will sacrifice any amount of lives to stand on them and declare he’s “on top of things” but there is nothing he can do to have a strong economy in November, we will still be in recession until at least late 2021, his main argument for re-election is now gone. Both the bear market and high unemployment will be on him in Nov.

He’s going down…as long as we can prevent him from corrupting the election which he is dedicated to doing.

PRESS RELEASE: Fox News to Launch Reality Series to Help Economy, “Dying For Dollars”

Now, reality television will always just be the cause of a monster being in power in the WH.

Trump has found that the cheapest solution to a stand in is the one that looks the most like him. They just put an outhouse on a dolly and throw a wig on top. Many people will instantly shout out, “Mr. President!” at the sight (or smell).

That’s a fascinating story! I hear Trump has also run screaming from his own reflection since he also has fears that he’s an imposter. Who could be as stupid and horrible as the real Donald Trump? Not him, in his mind.

Could there be a nightmare any scarier than waking up and seeing that you’re Donald Trump? Was that on Black Mirror or the new Twilight Zone?

Maybe we could work out something, you keep trying to resemble him and we’ll make the switch. I’m working with an Ivanka look-alike who can be the bait, he can’t resist chasing after her, we can have her run past a Burmese tiger trap (minus the spikes) and once he falls into it, substitute you for him.

What do you think?

» Posted By AdLib On March 30, 2020 @ 12:11 pm

Thanks TOCB!

If they did, I’d be happy to contribute financially and personally to lodge a class action suit against Fox News for endangering and even bringing about the deaths of people who believed their original propaganda that COVID-19 was a Dem hoax and no worse than the flu. That’s a lawsuit that should be filed anyway and hopefully will.

» Posted By AdLib On March 30, 2020 @ 11:47 am

Oh man, you’ve shattered my faith in reality TV! I swear I saw you die, I thought for sure you were a ghost of vengeance! Damn, it was all fake? I should’ve known! And now I hear it wasn’t shot in Hawaii, that fake Kilhuea was shot at Mar-a-Lago! Wow…a fake reality show, who would have thunk it…except anyone living through Trump’s current fake reality show?

I know Trump has stand-ins for Melania, I’d bet he has stand-ins for himself. It probably took a long time for Trump to cast a stand-in, he kept hiring guys who were 6′ 2″ and weighed 230 and for some odd reason, they didn’t resemble him at all…except if they put on a fat suit and hunched over.

Trump probably wouldn’t have aired the pilot if he knew how perfect and tremendous your hair was!

Aha! That’s why you’re tearing up!

I’m impressed that you were chosen for the promo, the first to be sacrificed to The Gods of the Dow. One helpful hint when you jump into the volcano, you really want to get it right on the first take.

Oh no! Just read the last line of your comment! I hope your hair looked good!!!

Donald Trump Wants a Re-Election That You’d Just Die For

I’m certain that neither of them would be Republicans today. Not men who work to save lives. Trump’s Party is a Death Cult, they so quickly and easily sign off on killing 11 million Americans because they (wrongly) think it could make the stock market go back up and help re-elect their cult leader.

It’s hard now for anyone to make the argument that the GOP is not populated by people who are probably mentally ill.

» Posted By AdLib On March 25, 2020 @ 3:34 pm

I’d compare it to how nasty little brats act when they’re not getting what they want. They want Trump and the GOP to keep power but the stock market crashed and the economy is dooming them. So the response is a calculated but petulant one.

“Just make things go back the way they were so we can win!”

Even when trying to justify that means telling people to voluntarily contract a deadly illness, they’re self-centered little brats and care about only themselves. I guarantee you, all these cowards claiming they would give up their lives are in their basements as they are in those interviews, they’re not going to do that.

They just want the public, who they see as morons, to sacrifice themselves for the political environment they’d rather have, where the market and the economy is up and gives Repubs their only argument for re-election.

Of course the reality is that as they rally people to go back to work and expose each other to the virus, they’re not solving the problem but just making it worse as they whip up another jump in the spread and the economy has to be shut down again.

Small minded and sociopathic morons.

» Posted By AdLib On March 25, 2020 @ 3:30 pm

Here is a Repub pol who is basically saying, “it’s worth killing millions of innocent Americans if it makes the wealthy wealthier.”

This is what they describe as saying the quiet part loudly.

» Posted By AdLib On March 23, 2020 @ 8:50 pm

I can hardly imagine what doctors and nurses are going through, as they work long hours with more gravely sick patients to care for and the concern that they could catch it. And running out of protective equipment? They and the patients are living the real nightmare.

That’s remarkable that you knew Dr. Starkloff’s grandchildren! He saved the lives of so many. A real hero.

» Posted By AdLib On March 23, 2020 @ 8:46 pm

The irony is, he calls himself a “pro-lifer”. I suppose that doesn’t apply to the majority of the US population.

» Posted By AdLib On March 23, 2020 @ 8:41 pm

Thanks so much, NoMan!

It’s very surreal, to see this all happening in real time. The spread of the pandemic, the shutdown of the economy and uncontrollable crashing of the stock market, the hospitals flooded with patients and short of ventilators and protective gear…and the president we all knew was mentally unfit to be in the WH, going mad and about to pour gasoline on a raging fire of pandemic.

Thankfully, governors and mayors who put the quarantines in place don’t have to follow anything Trump declares and won’t.

Though in the red states, Trump is going to be responsible for so much suffering and death, it’s almost beyond comprehension but betrays how he looks at them like bugs under his shoe.

Yes, when I saw that video of Ms. Langston, it really impacted me, especially because of her youth. Hearing how out of breath she becomes just from speaking a little, really showed how devastating this is to anyone who becomes very ill with it. Can you imagine how someone over 60 would be struggling to overcome this? Scary.

Stay safe at home and healthy, NoMan! We’ll get through this by playing it safe and as she said, not taking any chances.

» Posted By AdLib On March 23, 2020 @ 8:12 pm

Yes, I saw that story and the graph showing St Louis blunted the spread while Philly got hit hard. The lesson seems so clear and yet, the greed and selfishness of Trump, the wealthy and the GOP, outweighs the unnecessary deaths of Americans.

This is so sick and yet 40% of Americans are happy lemmings to walk off that cliff because their cult leader tells them to.

It’s prescient of you to say that about McConnell and friends, this just appeared on social media, TX LT Gov on Fox advocating for millions of seniors to willingly die to help the stock market go back up.

» Posted By AdLib On March 23, 2020 @ 8:02 pm

Agreed on that, Dahlia, these press conferences are virtually worthless information-wise and are in fact more dangerous than beneficial. I just read how another man has died from taking chloroquine phosphate at Trump’s urging:

https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/briannasacks/man-died-chloroquine-phosphate-coronavirus

Not to mention his lies and propaganda before and during this pandemic. People have and will die because of what Trump is saying in these “appearances” and it now seems wholly irresponsible for the cable news channels to be broadcasting what he says live. They have deaths on their hands too through collaborating with the broadcasting of deadly lies.

Indeed, Trump is a sociopath, he has no compassion for other people, let alone anyone he sees standing between him and money or re-election. He did just have to close all of his golf courses and hotels so that is no doubt some of his motivation to rush people back into harm’s way.

8 days from now will only put us in a much worse situation as the spread grows wider and more deadly. Here’s a graph showing the U.S. has the most quickly accelerating spread in the world and that’s despite Trump having delayed and hindered testing:

https://image.cnbcfm.com/api/v1/image/106455794-158489180795420200322totalconfirmedcases740px.png

Pretty much the same story here, we’re staying in and protecting ourselves aside from occasional trips to the market (thankfully we stocked up on paper goods before the shelves were barren).

As I mentioned above, when it comes to life and death, no one should listen to Trump unless they don’t care about dying. Having a greedy narcissist in charge of a country during a humanitarian crisis is a formula for making it far more deadly.

So we do need to cut the cord 100% on anything and everything that comes out of Trump’s mouth or his government. It is dubious at best and dangerous at worst. There is no federal government to look to now but many states and cities are fortunate to have governments that are seeking to protect them.

You take care too and hoping all your family and friends are safe and sound.

The worldometers site is great, BTW, thanks for that link!

We’ll get through this eventually but ironically, I think we’re going to see Trump’s greed-driven “thinning of the herd” take out his followers the hardest.

Coronavirus Panic is Real, Happening Now and Creepy

It seems like those drowning in toilet paper should have done most of the damage they’re going to do by now…unless it’s like a neurosis and they will keep buying up TP until their garages and backyards are filled with it.

I’d at least like to think that most of the panic buying has happened and availability of staples will start growing in the coming weeks.

But if it comes down to it, I’ll trade in my Ram truck for some baby wipes.

» Posted By AdLib On March 16, 2020 @ 6:20 pm

Hey AuntiChrist! Great to “see” you!

Actually, there are many Latinos in my neighborhood and the Panic Shopping was an equal opportunity deployer.

How are things out your way at the markets?

» Posted By AdLib On March 16, 2020 @ 11:49 am

I’m sure you found it as foreign as I did, this kind of mob mentality, panicking mindlessly (they need all that bottled water because COVID-19 will blow up their water faucets?) and appearing interested in only themselves and theirs.

I do understand the rushing through the store part of it. First, they are panicked overall so that’s part of it but second, they are panicked that some pig will take the all the remaining packages of toilet paper instead of their taking it all (it’s only when other people hoard that the hoarder is a pig).

I will say though, that while the Costco back on the 6th was packed as illustrated above, there wasn’t rushing through the store. Maybe that was because the intensity of the threat wasn’t as acute as it is now though maybe it also is a result of having a greater amount of Trumpers there who were mindlessly buying his BS that it was all a Dem hoax until they had the rug pulled out from under them as Trump was forced to admit it wasn’t. So they’re late to the game as the spike of cases is coming and feel the need to rush to prepare? Or maybe it’s the same now in L.A. markets, I don’t know because I haven’t been back to one so far. Though, my wife went to the same Ralph’s last week that I had no trouble buying whatever I needed and said the store was stripped clean of food. No meats, no bread, no produce, no frozen meals…and the lines were enormous. She just left (as I did at Costco).

I had already stocked up (without hoarding, only bought one big pack of toilet paper) on food on the 6th so we’re fine for a while, we’d be fine for the next couple of weeks if need be but I did want to get some things we’re running low on without diving back into The Hunger Games.

So, I decided to try the market’s website for pickup or delivery. Aside from toilet paper and water not being available, nearly everything else was at least available to select. So, I completed my shopping list and decided to go with delivery instead of pickup, since it wasn’t a rush. The first available date was in 5 days which was fine so I went with it. Curious, I went back and did a test shopping on the site for pickup instead and discovered that there were no available pickup times for three days, which was as far as they offered it so there was no pickup time one could setup at all.

Flush with my success with that order, I remembered Costco had free delivery for orders over $75 so I thought I’d see how far I could get there. Much was available, you could even order toilet paper though it had a caution that it might not be available and suggested paper towels as a substitute (that would be “roughing it” but it’s a time for self-sacrifice). I ordered most of what I had originally intended to buy on the 6th and delivery was shown as 4 days from then.

I don’t know if they will actually be able to provide all the items I requested but I’ll update here when I get my orders.

Meanwhile, this happened while I was writing this, my daughter walked to the Ralph’s as an expedition (home from school and starting online HS tomorrow for two weeks at least) and is shopping there now. She says it’s pretty normal, not crowded and lots of groceries available. Some things are unavailable, canned soup, frozen foods, water, tp and there are signs at least in the dairy aisle saying to limit purchases to multiples of two but no one’s going to starve.

I had a feeling that after the “gorge” of overbuying, there should be a relative return to normal in markets as people try to dig themselves out from under the 10 jugs of gallon milk they bought last week (I saw a photo of a woman who filled her cart that way…how do you store all that milk???).

It’s maybe not as ironic as it is revealing a truth we’ve pretty much known all along, these “Christian” Trump supporters use that title to think of themselves as righteous but it just camouflages their true nature of being selfish/racist/hateful/etc.

Trump may be more of a personification of the moral corruption of a big segment of our nation, thanks in large part to the cynical brainwashing by people like the Kochs, Fox News and other RW elitists to leverage them for wealth and power.

It will be a fight in November to dislodge Trump but the momentum continues to grow on our side.

A Thoughtful Note to Democratic Voters: Calm the Fuck Down

I agree, momentum builds behind candidates however I think this is a unique primary. The Dems have had a history of having leading candidates who are moderate, they may lean a little to the left in primaries but veer back to the center in the GE.

In this unique case, a very Left candidate has started off the primary as the front runner, his appeal is not universal in the party so there are a meaningful percentage of voters who are strongly opposed to him AND fairly make the case that there is no path for him to tack towards the center in a GE.

Also, usually we don’t have so many candidates splitting up the vote so while having high 20’s to low 30’s numbers are winning in a 7 person primary, if that is a ceiling for Sanders, as the race narrows down, that may be a losing percentage.

So many things going on this election cycle. The urgency and absolutism to beat Trump, the rise of the Dem version of “The Forgotten People” rallying behind Bernie, his defiantly socialist and abrasive persona, his hostile and vindictive followers (not saying they’re a majority but they are there), the strong distaste by many non-Bernie Dems to strongly oppose him, etc.

In the end, will Bernie’s momentum stall if he is facing only one other alternative? Will the 70% or more nnot-supporting Bernie coalesce behind that one candidate or as you ponder, would some of them just turn to support Bernie?

I don’t know for sure but I would never underestimate the power of the party establishment. Might they step in after Super Tuesday to try and push out candidates who have no path? The rules are clear though, unless Bernie gets the support of a majority of the party, which I don’t know will be the case, he will not be the nominee. If he comes into the convention with 35% and the next closest candidate has 25% but is more supported by the party, it’s fair game for both to solicit delegates at the convention and for the 25%er to be the nominee.

There is a double-edged sword for Bernie, many of his supporters are well shown in polls to not vote Dem if Bernie isn’t the nom. Many Dems see Bernie as a coming disaster. Either way, Dems will lose a segment of voters that they will have to make up. I wonder if it might not make more sense in a convention deciding scenario, to go with the candidate who can make up voters from a bigger pool of potentials than Bernie’s smaller pool. And knowing that Russia and Trump are betting heavily that Bernie will be an electoral disaster for Dems perception matters.

A scenario I think is very possible is that after Super Tuesday, the primary opponent to Bernie in the primary will become more apparent and candidates who have been distracting and draining votes away, like Klobuchar, Steyer, and Buttigieg will decline to where they either drop out or hemorrhage voters to the primary Bernie opponent.

In such a scenario, we might see Bernie’s main opponent consolidate support and whether they come in below but close to his total, are neck and neck or have the most, either a plurality or a majority, a Bernie opponent could end up the nominee.

What’s allowing Bernie to win with 28% support is the dividing up of the non-Bernie vote. When the field shrinks, I think that it would be difficult for those who have seen Bernie adversarially, to join him instead of his then-unified opponent.

That could be Biden, it could be Bloomberg but I think the porridge that is just right for that and unifying Bernie voters and Biden voters is Warren. She’s not the most likely one right now to win the primary but she may be more ideal.
