The proposition of PlanetPOV was really rather simple. We believed that bloggers who wrote so smartly and thoughtfully at HP and elsewhere (as we hopefully did) would shine even brighter when given true freedom of expression and respect. And the character of discourse, once it was established that trolls and personal attacks were barred, would naturally seek a level that mirrored the sensibilities of concerned and thoughtful people. Build it and they will come. And so many fantastic people have. As to editing here, you are so right! It is difficult to touch anyone’s comments, it goes against all of our instincts as fellow bloggers. However, through our minimal experience here with trolls and/or conflicts, I have become comfortable with the approach of seeing these as fires that break out and need to be immediately extinguished. There is absolutely nothing positive that comes out of allowing such “fires” to grow and spread. It is an abuse and a taking for granted of the freedom of expression that’s provided here. Here, all have the freedom to express themselves as long as they don’t use it to infringe on others and their freedoms. Unlike some other sites, we are intentionally seeking to build a community that exemplifies the best aspects of the people who live in this country and this world (we want citizens here from all countries!). One thing that is interesting is how the impressive articles that are written here are by people who started off as members saying that they don’t know that they can write as well as everyone else here. What I hope has become clear is that when anyone comes here to write about what matters to them, the quality and impact of their writing is just as affecting and impressive to everyone else here. Good writing is indeed about honesty and in that way, everyone is capable of being a profound writer. My mother is nearly that age, imagining this happening to her makes me nearly blind with fury. Drugs and/or gangs are often at the root of this kind of senselessly violent crime but not exclusively. We have sociopathic greed as the corporate role model for society, it’s mirrored everywhere you turn, even in the so-called “humorous” commercials corporations put on, people selfishly knocking others aside or dissing others to take what they want. The media we’re surrounded by is presenting selfishness as what’s expected of us, is it a surprise there is so much violence and hatred generated by narrow-minded selfishness? This is a systemic problem, we do have to come together and grow as a community, as we have begun here, to affirm principles and respect as a necessary requirement of a decent and civil society. We need to stand up against this corporate-esque, self-justifying mantra of selfishness that is decaying our society. I think that the only path for our society to pull out of the quicksand that is pulling it down is for science to provide a discovery or breakthrough that lifts us out of it, primarily with a solution on energy generation. For example, a big breakthrough on transforming solar energy into a global power source would reshape the world, especially third world nations. If oil was no longer “needed”, how would that impact what goes on in the Middle East and wars around the world? How many new technological advances, applications and industries would be created if there was a cheap and unlimited supply of energy? Changing society through politics is limited and gradual, as we’ve discovered. Science however, is what has transformed society most substantially in recent history and I am hoping it may do so again in this positive way in the near future. Second, there should not be Super Delegates, the 2008 election proved why. They represent a way to undermine the democratically favored candidate. If Hillary had prevailed with her strategy of getting SD votes to overcome the democratically elected majority of delegates Obama won, would the Dem Party have really benefited? Yes, they can do whatever they want to select a candidate, hell, they don’t even need to hold primary elections, they could play Rock, Paper, Scissors to decide. But if you want to have an energized electorate, you can’t piss on the majority by deciding at the end of the day that their votes are best tossed in the trash if they don’t select who the DNC folks want. Of course, there is the political reality that those who are SDs sure don’t want to lose their status or influence. Our belief was the simple proposition that the type of principled, thoughtful people that blogged that way at HP would naturally create and respect such an environment. Meanwhile, a “hit” is defined as a request for a file from the web server.
