Obama seems to have believed that the country would get behind him more if he focused on bipartisanship and moderate policies. He may also have factored in that many were afraid of what he would do because he’s black so he may have thought proving how moderate he was would quell some of the racist fears. I think it was a mistaken calculation. What many of us think he should have done is use his mandate to slam through bold initiatives and if the Repubs in Congress whined, mow them down with moving public opinion against them or tossing out the filibuster. The only exception was his stand on Afghanistan which he was very consistent about. That is why there is the disappointment factor, he has moderated his position on the banks, on government health insurance, on DADT, on a number of Bush Policies, there is a long list. Though, he is a good president as moderates go. The real question though is whether the currency values around the world rise as the economy recovers. That would lead to a reduction in investment in gold. Then the question is, what would one or two big quarters of economic growth do to the value of gold and would it create a domino effect that sends gold plummeting? Historically, I think we’ve seen this repeatedly. The same 10 year growth you refer to was the case for the housing market too. Gold is over valued now because of the very reasons you explain. It is seen as the only secure investment and so much has been invested in it. I remember people saying the same thing about the stock market, that 10,000 was the new 0 and that it would rise to 25,000 during Bush’s term. It is a shock to the system when the realization hits you that HuffPo isn’t a Progressive site, it’s a nakedly profit-driven investment vehicle masquerading as one to milk Progressives for clicks and visits…IOW, ad revenue. The level of hostility and conflict at the site has proven to keep people there so they encourage and likely even provide some of it. That “fanning” thing is a sucker play. It is addictive to score up fans and want more…but “fans” are like Monopoly money only worth less. People gain more fans by pandering than anything else. The worst trolls have many fans. AND…if you make unHuffington posts, you’ll be banned no matter how many fans you have and they’ll be gone forever. So what are “fans” really worth? As I’ve said, HuffPo is a very cynical, all-about-money, betrayal-in-progress of a site and their growing presence throughout the media is disturbing. It is an unprompted tradition here, that when people have walked away from HuffPo to The Planet, they write insightful articles about their realizations. Really appreciate yours.
