Election Day Thread – GOP SC Primary and Dem NV Caucus – 2-20-2016

Monica, I appreciate your caution but the good news is that neither Cruz or Rubio are going to drop out so by their splitting the majority of the GOP, Trump will continue to win delegates!

Rubio and Cruz don’t look to have any state where they can win 1st but many states where they will be on a par and divide the GOP vote.

The way it looks now, either Trump wins or it’s a brokered convention and the GOP tears itself apart trying to deny Trump the nom.

Trust in the destructive nature of Repubs and what happens when they turn that inwardly on themselves.

Monica, no, we’re not in trouble. 66% of the GOP voted against Trump and in polling, Trump loses to either Rubio or Cruz in a two person race…he loses even in the GOP! He has a very hard ceiling of support and among indies, it’s very low.

I want Trump to win the GOP nom because as most Estab Repubs panic about, Trump will be destroyed in a GE.

With 10% of the vote in SC, Cruz and Rubio are jostling for 2nd place, Cruz just barely ahead of Rubio.

Meanwhile, Jeb is flirting with single digits, vacilating between 10% and 9%. Watch what happens next week if Jeb ends up in single digits…he’s out!

Trump is declared the winner in SC but the battle for 2nd continues between Cruz and Rubio…and the drama over Bush dropping out due to underperforming is still going on!

Hillary is projected the winner in Nevada, so far it’s 52% to 48% for Bernie. It is a win for Hillary but considering hoow far ahead of him she was just months ago, it actually reflects a lot of momentum for Bernie. Still, congrats to Hillary.

However, in South Carolina, it is still too close to call, could be a disappointing win or loss for Trump and Rubio coould be in real contention for 2nd with Cruz.

BTW, with only a tiny percentage reporting, Bush is in 4th place. Again, I bet that if he gets less than 10%…or even if he gets double digits but is a distant 4th, he drops out!

This is a nail biter! Stay tuned!

Prediction time!

I think Ben Carson will have to call it quits after tonight and…Jeb Bush will drop out if he doesn’t finish a close 4th or better and in double digits. If Jeb is in single digits, it’s all over for the “smarter” Bush and hopefully it will end the Bush Dynasty for good (including the next clone in line, George P. Bush).

I think Bernie will either win or virtually tie Hillary in Nevada which could make SC closer and harder to position as momentum for Hillary even if she wins as expected.

Predictions anyone?

GOP Will Help Dems Retake Senate By Putting Party Before Country and Constitution

That’s a great graphic, James. The longest wait being for Brandeis due to bigotry since he was the first Jewish SCOTUS judge.

No coincidence the party of bigotry wants to at a minimum triple that longest period of approval against the first African American President. And claim that “the people” didn’t decide they wanted him acting as President to appoint SCOTUS judges when he was re-elected, the people only speak when someone who isn’t Obama is elected at the end of this year (and a Republican).

Of course, according to the bigoted GOP, Pres. Obama is only entitled to 3 years of his 4 year term and should just give up his 4th year of fulfilling his duties as President.

Ain’t gonna happen!

Srinivasan sure does seem like a great candidate though considering that this will likely be a nom that’s held up and the nominee will need to wait it out, maybe Loretta Lynch? She can continue as AG throughout it, is eminently qualified and the image of the virtually all white Repub Senate refusing to seat a strongly qualified African American woman who they previously approved to be AG could be very damaging to the Repub Senate and help Dems retake The Senate.

Many other great candidates too, I have no doubt that whoever it is, Obama will nominate a great and unassailable nominee.

I suppose that the Repubs need to hit rock bottom, especially in an election year, and get destroyed at the polls to finally learn that certain lines shouldn’t be crossed. As it is now, they are like spoiled children who have their wealthy parents’ credit cards and car keys and are confident they are protected from getting into trouble no matter what they do.

Time for a major spanking this Nov!

Great article Kalima and as it percolates into the Repubs tiny minds, they may indeed realize that approving Obama’s SCOTUS nominee is in their best interest.

Meanwhile, I hope Obama and Dems around the country are going to move full steam ahead in getting cases in front of the Circuit Courts on all the critical issues!

KT – I agree, the Repubs should have been hugely sanctioned by voters when it came out that they would try to sabotage Obama on everything from the day he was inaugurated but they successfully used fear and hatred in 2010 to gerrymander a corrupt majority in The House and take over many seats around the country.

The timing was bad and we’ve paid a price for it. But now, it’s payback time!

I do think this will energize Dems even more to GOTV. With the SCOTUS position open, Dems really are on the verge of enormous change, all the Repubs can use this for is “Stay the course” which is not a motivating theme in this year. But change really is.

I have been concerned about the enthusiasm Hillary wouldn’t inspire in Dems but this is the missing piece. Even if Hillary doesn’t excite Dems, the opportunity to change the course of the nation profoundly will. And the outrage towards Senate Repubs refusing to vote on Obama’s nom will fire up people too.

This is a big factor for Dems winning in Nov!

Thanks for this, Nirek. For any person with a shred of character or conscience, it could push them to back off of such hypocrisy but that TurtleMan McConnell has neither to interfere with it so I doubt that as he’s exposed for this, he changes his tune.

Hey Nirek, yep, that would be a dream I’d love to see come true!

That’s right, if Bernie or Hillary become President AND Dems take back the Senate, Repub heads will explode when a Dem SCOTUS judge is put on the court.

Repubs won’t be able to filibuster the SCOTUS for 4 years, they will be eliminated from the Senate first.

At least right now, there no longer is a Repub majority on the SCOTUS which is big. And when the majority goes against Repubs…that’s what I’ve been counting on to fox so many wrongs in this country. Looking forward to it!

Seeing him at 7%, I think Christie will have to call it quits soon. Carly is so over. Carson will probably stay in at least until SC but he is so toast.

Everyone else stays in for a little while but I do think Kasich is out after the next 1 or 2 primaries.

And Rubio will fade out gradually, his marcomentum is micromentum.

Kes, Kasich will be crushed in the next primary, in SC as Trump and Cruz gain the Religious Right votes there. The Repub base hates Kasich, he’s dead ended by running as a moderate in NH to win there, in deep red states he will be reviled.

Bernie’s ahead by 18 now and declared the winner! Hillary’s camp was ready to spin this as a victory for her if she lost by single digits. Just for the sake of clarity and as a blow to disinformation, I’m glad Bernie is winning by double digits.

Trump first and Kasich second is perfect for Dems, Trump and Cruz are locked in a battle and Kasich is not liked in SC so his dropping there will mess up things.

Another good election night all the way around!

Okay, the MSM is so delighted about how so many NH voters say they’re undecided until they get into the polling booth.

My reaction is, “What idjits!”

They get to see all the candidates in person over and over, more than any voters except IA, ask any and all questions they have on the issues, see them in debates…and somehow it makes them more clueless about who to vote for???

It almost seems like it’s encouraged in NH to be undecided until they vote, so that it helps milk campaigns of money into advertising and events.

NH voters should be the most informed and choosing a candidate should be far easier because of that. If all the campaigning in NH just makes voters dizzy and clueless, is that a statement about political campaigns or people in NH?

I like making predictions even though I risk completely whiffing this but what the hell.

I think Christie and Carly may drop out tomorrow. Neither looks likely to do well tonight, Christie had everything riding on having a great showing in NH and I don’t think that’s going to happen. Carly is polling so low, she’s not even in the debates now. If she was smart…which is in question…she would recognize there is no path for her anymore, Trump and Cruz have consolidated the RW loon vote so there’s nothing left for her and all the rest of the candidates will leave her far behind (except maybe Christie).

Here’s a qualified prediction, if Jeb! isn’t at least in the high single digits, his campaign is over…even though with all his money he may stay in for a while so he can leave on his own terms.

No matter what, Trump, Cruz, Rubio and Kasich will move on from here (but Kasich will be smacked down in SC and the South, he’s strongly disliked by the core Repubs even though Estab Repubs love him).

Will Hillary’s Use of the Gender Card Backfire?

Kes, I don’t think Albright or Steinem are bad people for doing what they did. They were playing their part in Hillary’s strategy in the final days to try once again to grab the women’s vote to win NH as she did in 2008.

It was a two pronged strategy of claiming she’s being victimized by Bernie and his supporters via sexism and shaming young women into coming over to her camp.

It was a real miscalculation though.

Having “won” Iowa, she couldn’t replicate what happened when she lost in 2008 so they had to manufacture a sexist attack to rally women to them. And who better than two feminist icons to counsel younger women on where there responsibility lay as women, to vote for the woman candidate and usher in the first woman President.

What poisoned the well is the elitist sensibility of all of it. As you mentioned, though Hillary knows Albright and Steinem are superstars of feminism, young women today may not be so familiar with them and hold them in such high regard. And then having them deliver such self-important disses of young women didn’t make them feel guilty, they instead felt, “Who the hell are these women to tell me who I have to vote for?”

As President, Hillary would probably be more like her triangulating husband’s presidency. Some Progressive things would be supported but some compromises that advance pro-corporate and pro-war goals would also be made. We would get decent SCOTUS judges which is most important to me so while we’ll probably lose ground in some areas, overall we would be far better off than if any Repub got in.

BTW, I am planning to write an article soon on the underestimating of Bernie’s electability in a GE. People may not recall that all of these doubts were raised big time when it came to a black man with the middle name “Hussein”.
