Can a Brexit-Type Vote Happen Here and Elect Trump?

I just watched an interview with Gove before the vote and here are two “brilliant” predictions by this pompous idiot. First, he claimed Scotland would vote for Brexit and would not want another vote on independence because of that.

He also lives in fanatsyland on economics, claiming that the EU will give them the same access to the Single Market as only EU members have…because we’re the superior British and they’d have to.

So his pitch was, the UK would get everything they have that they like from being in the EU after they left the EU, without contributing in any way to it.

Right…because the EU wouldn’t think that every other country would leave immediately wanting the same “everything for free” deal.

What an ignorant ass with no concept of the way the world really works!

Kalima, Gove looks like a sickly clone of Mr. Bean, just uses his personal opinions of “I don’t agree” to dismiss all the opinions of experts and facts that dispute his opinions…how can anyone take that blathering twit seriously? And he’s been decimating and privatizing education…what a tool.

Kalima, it’s kind of astounding that politicians are so ignorant of history.

For Labour, Tony Blair took a path similar to Bill Clinton’s, both pulled their parties away from the left and towards the conservative side.

When Bill did so, Dems lost their liberal identity and became Republican-Lite so when Gore ran for President, many Americans saw him and Bush as essentially two sides of the same coin and it didn’t matter which of them won.

Labour followed the same undermining path by becoming Tory-Lite and unsurprisingly, lost their base. What they failed to understand, like Dems, is that if voters want Conservatives, they’ll go to the party that has been specializing in it.

Fortunately, Obama’s Presidency and Bernie’s candidacy have steered the Dems back to the Progressive/Liberal identity they need to be winners that represent the majority.

Labour has to do the same, their leaders need to get more backbone and decisively disengage from trying to mirror the conservative positions of the Tories, re-connect with unions and the working class and represent their views. Then they will be a legit and competitive alternative to the Tories.

I know there are many more complexities to this but essentially, when liberal parties sacrifice their values thinking that imitating conservatives that are in power could lead to their regaining power, history indicates that as ultimately a losing proposition.

I hope by November, Brexit is being re-examined…and your property value goes back to where it should be. I appreciate the financial burden though and hope it works out in any case.

Yes, Trump’s sloppy desperation at fundraising comes right after the embarrassing stories about how little he’s raised and has on hand. Seems like they just bought lots of email lists and tried shotgunning to all kinds of people…in the process, violating FEC laws.

I don’t think there will be any criminal investigation, probably for the best because he’d paint himself as a victim being attacked by Obama’s government to keep an outsider from becoming President but I doubt he’ll get much in the way of contributions.

The real damage to him will be when funding figures are announced for June and it shows how no one wants to invest in his doomed candidacy.

Nate Silver just gave Hillary an 80% chance of winning the election. He’s usually pretty good on predictions.

With Republican support waning for Trump (he’s gone from 70% of Repubs supporting him to about 50%) and indies moving to Hillary, I feel the same as I have from the beginning, that Trump will be the new Goldwater for the Repubs and bring them one of the biggest defeats as a party they’ve seen in a generation.

Kalima, good points. I don’t dislike Corbyn, it was actually exciting when he won the position of leader but de facto, I don’t think he’s the person who can lead Labour back into power. With such a high number standing against him in a no confidence vote, doesn’t his remaining in his position keep Labour more divided and weaker?

What you describe makes Boris Johnson an even more disgusting human being than he was. To rally this Brexit vote just for his own political leverage then to unexpectedly win and run away after seeing the destruction he’s helped cause? What a piece of work!

I’ve seen it described as leading an army to a battle then running away at the first sight of gunfire.

Never surprising that bullies like him and Trump are actually cowards.

I assume his political career is over now, how could he run for anything again and be taken seriously?

I’m with you in any case on hoping the Brexit vote could somehow be turned around. It’s clear that it is a disaster for the UK and destroying the savings and property values of Brits.

Maybe you should hold onto your house for a little while, in hopes Brexit doesn’t go through?

It’s ironic that Brits can look at the US and see what a joke Trump is yet a majority marched behind Boris and voted for Brexit, not thinking about the actual ramifications.

It definitely is easier to look elsewhere and see the folly though I think most Americans dislike Trump because they recognize what a crazed con man he is.

gyp46, so true that making a decision to vote out of fear is about the worst thing you can do as a voter. Witness the re-election of Bush/Cheney in 2004.

I think the Trump Zombies have just a simple, zombie-like process of thinking: “Things good for Trump are good. Things bad for Trump are bad.”

That’s it, no reasoning, no critical thinking, no understanding of facts or reality. For these brain dead creatures, The Trump campaign represents the opportunity to say “Fuck you!” to the society they blame for everything that makes them unhappy about their lives.

No wonder that the only sub-demographic that he wins is “uneducated white males”. Only morons would ignore so much and buy into such obvious daily lies by Trump so that they could express their inner road rage, not caring one bit who could get hurt as long as they get their emotional gratification.

I have said this from the beginning, Trump will lose big time like the second coming of Goldwater and is already destroying the GOP in the process. This is all for the best, we should be glad that the bigots and small minded haters that populate the GOP will finally be represented by a candidate that can be destroyed in an election so they can again be banished from the political landscape for a long time to come.

It does seem pretty clear that the core Brexit voters, and even many of the less intense Brexit voters, saw this as an opportunity to express their anger and resentment at how they feel their standard of living has gone downhill.

One can actually agree with many of them on the decline of the quality of life for many in the UK, with all the shredding of the social safety net and the same economic inequity the majority faces here in the US as well. However, the ignorant and often bigoted response to it all that many of them reached, should be condemned for what it is.

Voting to destroy the UK’s economic and political stability to “send a message” is just plain stupid as is doing so out of bigotry and buying into UKIP’s Nazi-like propaganda of blaming the “non-Anglos” for all of their woes.

The pro-Brexit forces lied and deceived to prey on the lowest instincts and emotions of many Brits to advance their nationalist agenda.

What is kind of amusing is how the unprincipled and greedy nature of the Tories has brought the party to tear itself apart. Cameron has to resign for betraying the nation and selling out the future of the UK to win re-election, Boris Johnson stabbed Cameron in the back by flipping around to be a top supporter of Brexit and Gove stabbed Johnson in the back, abandoning him to run for PM himself and forced Johnson to give up running.

Labour has its problems too with Corbyn being a total wishy-washy failure on Brexit and refusing to resign despite the party giving him a decisive no-confidence vote.

But the Tories are the ones who have really done the true damage to UK society and its future through austerity, slashing and privatizing social programs and bringing about Brexit and the economic disaster it represents all out of selfish, political greed.

So horrible to hear what you and husband went through with those racist assholes but very glad you both goot out oof that situation safely.

And now, Brexit has unleashed a new wave of “acceptable” racism and hatred on people of all nationalities in the UK. The echoes of Nazi Germany is so loud, it’s deafening to many but IMO, seems so under-discussed by the media. Though I agree that many Brexit voters were motivated by how hammered they feel by the Tories and UK government, the explosion of racial hatred that followed Brexit also exposes the same Hitleresque mindset of a people beset by economic woes, being guided to hate “the others” in their society for causing all their woes.

It is in fact the wealthy in the UK who own the companies that are seeking and even importing workers from outside the UK so they can pay lower wages. Of course, it isn’t the immigrants’ fault for wanting to work and feed their families. But the wealthy know well how to avoid the spotlight for the damage their actions cause which contributes to the whipping up of bigotry.

It is an ugly time for good people in the UK and a good time for the ugliest people. While the economic harm of Brexit will continue, I think the British people will turn against these purveyors of hatred and division (including UKIP and Tories), as the destruction and failure they have brought to the nation sets in.

Meanwhile, Labour sits wounded and needs to get rid of Corbyn and find a more effective leader so that they can take the reins of power from the Tories (they have until 2020 now, they better get it done by then!).

KT, completely agree that no matter how unelectable Trump grows, GOTV is critical for Dems, keeping in mind that overconfidence can sabotage even the most “unbeatable” candidate.

Also, it’s very important that Dems retake the Senate and do their best to retake the House. The only way that happens is with big turnout.

gyp46, the advantage we have today is that there’s already been a Hitler so we know what could be, the Germans in 1932 didn’t have that foreknowledge of how horrible a hateful, bigoted tyrant could be and how he could destroy their nation and the world.

At this point, I think there will be a growing and powerful unity in the Dem Party behind Hillary and Dems will be so much more energized than Repubs who are running away from Trump.

Trump isn’t even qualified to run his own campaign, so is there any question that he’s not qualified to be President?

gyp46, it is a bit depressing to think that maybe 25% of adults in this country are ignorant, bigoted, insecure, fearful, poorly educated and incapable of critical thinking.

These people are immune to reason because they haven’t learned to do so. They make decisions based mostly on emotions and conformity.

Facts that dispute their desired beliefs are either outright disqualified or intentionally ignored as “tainted”. What they do believe in usually has no basis in fact but is instead built on a crumbling foundation of blind faith. Trump says “Believe me!” or “Trust me!” and whatever outrageous garbage he’s spewed is gobbled up by such people like baby birds.

These people NEED to believe that an authoritarian “Big Daddy” will take over the country and change everything to being just what they want it to be.

Minorities and women will go back to being 2nd class citizens, gays will be shoved back in the closet, no religion but Christianity will be respected and most of all, white people like them will have advantages over everyone else in jobs, income and throughout society just because they’re white.

This is how an ignorant and racist population in a nation declines, not with a bang but with a very gradual but growing desperation.

These fools have been and continue to support the very Repub pols who have made their lives more miserable. They may resent the estab Repubs to a degree but the thought just can’t grow in their tiny minds that maybe they were stupid and trusted the wrong people to improve their lives.

Being insecure, they’re unlikely to admit they were wrong and stupid so they instead conclude that what they need is a President who is everything that’s failed them but on steroids.

It’s like driving a car off a cliff and barely surviving, thinking that the mistake you made was that you didn’t drive off the cliff fast enough.

You’d waste your breath suggesting to these types, “Hey, how ’bout you don’t drive off a cliff at all and not get injured. You don’t have to get hurt you know?”

For many of these emotion/conformist driven morons though, voting against their own interests may be the one thing they do best.

And the “patriotic” RW Repubs who have called Obama a socialist and communist for years, want a sympathizer of a Russian tyrant to occupy the White House.

Emotion makes for some crazy “logic”, RWs howling about how horrible Hillary would be to justify their wanting an ignorant, racist Russian-styled dictator controlling the country.

Trump’s act has grown stale with the majority of voters, polls bear that out. And he will only fall more in the polls as his reality show act grates more and more on people.

The sad thing is that the MSM has already fallen off the wagon and is guzzling the Trump Vodka again, realizing that if they allow the “He’s too batshit crazy to be President” reality to take root then their Trump Gravy Train is derailed.

Saw MSNBC pumping up polls all day from PA and OH that showed Trump in a virtual tie with Hillary…but Florida turning strongly for Hillary which would make PA and OH irrelevant and hand Hillary the WH. But the meme they were trying to push is that the race is neck and neck…even though they also stated that Hillary’s national lead is growing and solidly ahead of Trump.

I think Trump has been cheap with his campaign because he’s really not a billionaire, it’s a con like everything else which is why he won’t ever show his tax returns. And with the revelation on how little money he’s raised and has on hand (only raised $3.1 million last month and only has $1.3 million on hand), I think it’s clear that he doesn’t have the money to finance a real campaign nor can he attract money at this point.

In his case, money sure didn’t buy class, it just financed a spoiled brat’s ability to bully, steal, deceive and gratify himself throughout his life.

You can’t teach an old brat new tricks, this fantasy Repub Elites have of Trump suddenly becoming Presidential is as delusional as Trump himself.

I think we’re in for months of the MSM struggling as hard as it can to insist that Trump is neck and neck with Hillary because it means lots of revenue to them. As the head of CBS said, “Trump may be bad for America but he’s good for us.”

This may be the first time “the press” is actually trying to manipulate a Presidential election to reap profits even if it destroys the country.

There’s little difference now in my mind between the greedy corporations that own the MSM and the greedy sociopaths that own Wall Street and cut open the country to grab all they could.

KT, so true that Sen. Murphy and his colleagues deserve a big thank you from the American people for doing what politicians should be doing, fighting for them.

And look at the results, there will be 4 bills on gun control voted on in the Senate.

What gets me is the obviously dishonest BS that the NRA and Repub pols use to try and derail any regulation. The “slippery slope” theory which is always used by the dishonest to stop what they oppose, that any regulation means everyone’s guns will be taken away.

There are limits to all constitutional rights. You can’t use the 1st Amendment to libel, slander, commit fraud or yell fire in a theater.

And is it legal for a 5 year old to buy an assault weapon? Or a convict? Aren’t they arguing that all US citizens have a right to own a gun? Why can’t they buy rocket-fired missiles and anti-aircraft guns?

A responsible society limits the rights of others when they infringe upon or become a danger to the rights of others.

According to our Constitution, we have a right to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. Allowing the mentally defective to buy assault weapons to shoot us and deny us our rights is unconstitutional. And which is more important (to anyone other than the NRA and their puppets), the right to live or the right for terrorists and the mentally ill to buy military weapons of war?

PPO, unfortunately, the political use of hatred, broadcast so shrill and constantly is like a match to the powder keg that a mentally disturbed person is. They become crazed by the inundation, whipped up by the dishonest manipulation of insecurities, frustrations and fears and act out on them.

The parallel between Orlando and the assassination of Jo Cox is inescapable, mentally damaged people can and will be driven to do horrible things when hatred is legitimized around them.

And add the mix of a group like ISIS, dedicated to use the mentally ill as an army to kill innocents in free countries, we can’t afford to keep the status quo.

Imagine how many people might be dead now if that gunman had an assault rifle instead of a homemade gun? And imagine how many human beings would be alive in Orlando today had that murderer not been able to buy a weapon of war.

PPO, that is such an elegant and simple solution. Ban ammunition for assault weapons. That would have a huge impact.

But no doubt, the loons would either make their own ammo or build an underground network for black market ammo. So the best forst thing we could do is what you propose and that should be followed up with putting back in place what used to prevent mass shootings, an assault weapons ban.

jj, the GOP’s main weapon against the major issues hurting America is indeed silence. They just want to distract from such things, using lies and straw men arguments, bigotry and partisanship.

Yet the problems in the country only grow.

Yes, I agree that the NRA and the Repub pols they own all support and literally empower mass killers to keep killing. The NRA wants an America where everyone is afraid of being killed in any public place so they buy more guns. And the Repubs are afraid that the NRA will finance a primary opponent against them if they stand up to them so they don’t.

Repubicans try to swagger as tough guys but the cowards can’t stand up to the NRA, Trump, etc. Cowards.

The NRA always says that any Democratic President wants to “take away our guns”. That’s an old song they always sing when they don’t have a puppet of theirs in the WH.

Hopefully, when the SCOTUS gets it’s moderate/liberal majority back next year (Trump can’t win), they can strike down Scalia’s Heller decision that wrongly claimed the 2nd Amendment gave the right to guns to individuals.

The 2nd Amendment clearly refers to the right to have guns as part of “a well regulated militia”. If the SCOTUS reverts back to the proper definition, maybe we can start to have laws that roll back ownership of guns to a far more sensible and civilized place.

Right, the biggest mass shooting in American history isn’t about shooting anything. If the terrorist didn’t have a gun and couldn’t shoot all those people, it still would’ve turned out just the same?

I am very glad Obama shot down that BS meme about saying, “Radical Islam!” somehow magically melts ISIS like The Wicked Witch. I’d guess they tested that in focus groups and found it hurt Obama so they kept repeating it…but when exposed to the light of reason, it looks so damn stupid.

Also, I too was annoyed when the MSM did what they always do on an actual Breaking News story and regurgitated whatever they heard, stating it as fact. The story on this lunatic isn’t clear yet, he seems to have been deranged since he was a child, might have had gay leanings that would’ve caused a real internal conflict in his warped mind and may have been just an angry, hateful misfit who looked to ISIS and Al Qaeda among other outlets for his inner sociopathy.

Some things are complex and when the MSM reduces them down into simple rumors that are often misleading and just plain wrong, it literally hurts our nation.

The bottom line on Repubs is that they throw as much grit as they can in the eyes of the public and media to blind them to the reality that their ultimate goal is to prevent government from helping Americans…who aren’t in the 1%. The details of what they say on each issue are irrelevant, all they are trying to do is prevent progress and improvement of the standard of living in the nation.

“No” by any other name…is still just “no”.

I do think that the way to describe AR-15 and similar assault rifles is “Weapons of War”. When branded that way and in context, protested as, “Terrorists and even American citizens in general should not be able to buy weapons of war,” is a more powerful argument than just calling them assault rifles or guns. It does seem that we may have reached a boiling point on legislation, now that terrorists are exploiting the NRA’s AR-15 Murder Giveaways!

KT, you make one of the most powerful points against the Repub’s bigotry, why don’t they also insist that the fundamentalist Christians who commit murder against abortion doctors, LGBT or minorities be labeled, “Radical Christian Extremists”? If simply saying three words outlaw will prevent crazed people from killing others, why not do that when it comes to Christians?

Of course we know the reason.

We’re the only country that allows anyone, even terrorists, to by weapons of war made for mass killing and somehow, we’re the only country where mass killings are a daily event.

Hmm…as opposed to saying three magic words, doesn’t the cause and effect seem pretty obvious.

As you say, we’re not going to be able to prevent crazies from killing innocent people. Even if everyone was armed, an attacker always has the element of surprise on his/her side so an act can’t be prevented and with multiple people shooting wildly, it could cause more deaths anyway.

Assault weapons need to be banned as they used to be. We had far less mass murders when that was the case and now that it isn’t, we’re setting new records in mass murder.

I can only see one way of accomplishing this. People have to vote against any politician with a positive rating from the NRA. Obviously, that won’t work in bloood red states but in swing states and blue states, any NRA backed politician needs to go and voters should make it clear in polling and interviews that gun control was a major reason for them voting against an incumbent who’s in bed with the NRA.

Indeed, anyone who thinks they need a military weapon designed to kill many people on a battlefield in their possession, automatically disqualifies themselves from being of sound mind to own one.

I heard that today McConnell refused to answer any questions about Trump, other Repubs were dodging reporters…the moment of silence continues.

But when Repubs remain silent as the nominee of their party froths at the mouth about our President being a traitor supporting terrorists and a billion Muslims all being complicit in the actions of any one of them, they become tarred with the same brush.

A few Repubs have shown a sliver of principle in vowing not to support Trump, as the other GOP party leaders stay behind Trump despite his bigotry, treasonous behavior and con man tactics. The GOP is dead and is being populated now by The Living Dead.
