However, Congress has asked for and received presidential tax returns in the case of Nixon and under somewhat similar auspices in suspecting wrongdoing tax-wise. The House has oversight powers that include the IRS and investigating if the IRS has been performing its duties and responsibilities properly with regards to the anyone’s taxes including the president. We already know that his non-profit charity broke the law and that he should have paid taxes on the money he used from it to spend on himself so there are grounds for investigating if, after the revelations about his criminal conduct involving this “charity”, the IRS took steps to investigate and assess Trump a tax liability for his personal use of those finds. That is one way to safely trigger that very legit IRS Code 6103(f). Yes, Trump and his law-breaking cronies will try to break this law too but I don’t think they have a leg to stand on aside from pounding their chests and moaning, “Presidential harassment!!!” That is not legal grounds to prevent The House oversight of the IRS. In the case of Nixon, the IRS stated to Congress that all was just peachy with his tax returns and nothing was out of line but The House discovered that Nixon owed $500,000 in taxes which he had to pay. THEN…the IRS finally reviewed his returns and what do you know? They too found he owed nearly $500k too! In April 1974, JCT [The House’s Joint Committee on Taxation] produced a 1,000-page report that found almost a dozen problems with Nixon’s returns. The agency said he owed $475,431 including interest for unpaid taxes over four years. It amounted to half of Nixon’s net worth. The same article also has this section: Some say a better precedent came during Republicans’ Obama-era investigations into whether the IRS discriminated against conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status. As part of those inquiries, Republicans used the law to make public protected tax information about those organizations. So this can be a precedent that allows The House not only to get Trump’s returns but to also make them public. In the end, I think the courts will have to follow precedent and the law and rule that Trump’s tax returns must be provided…or the courts will be invalidating their own legitimacy and the institution of courts as an enforcer of laws. She cited existing programs for children of vets and in current social programs that already provide this and could just be expanded. Practical and real plans and proposals are very refreshing to hear and I know we’ll be hearing more and more of them from other candidates too. Compare this with Trump’s attempts to kill the ACA again and promise something “wonderful” to replace it that he won’t announce until after the 2020 election. Really? How stupid and forgetful are people? They’re not going to remember his repeated attempts to end the ACA and protections for pre-existing conditions or his identical promise in 2016 to “repeal and replace” it with something far better? Or Mexico paying for the wall? Or bringing coal jobs back? Or ending urban violence? Or making great deals? However, AOC is too young to legally be president or VP, she’s only 29 years old and you have to be at least 35 years old. That’s not to say that if Bernie was to win the nomination, he couldn’t choose one of the younger Progressive Dems out there, including former 2020 candidates. AOC is clearly Republican Kryptonite, which is why they meltdown about her over the silliest of things. She brings a great energy to both the Progressive movement and the Dem Party. I think she will smooth out some of the rough edges around her as time goes by but IMO, the Dem Party has more vibrancy and relevance thanks to her and the other Progressives elected in 2018. Many of the issues Bernie ran on in 2016 that some people called “far left” then are far more mainstream now and supported by a majority of voters which puts him in a very strong position in the primary. This time though, for 2020, he has a lot of company on the Progressive side and Left/Center Dems too. In 2016, it was either the “entitled” establishment candidate, Hillary or the not-so-young upstart Bernie. For Dems who wanted a change, there was only one choice. The great thing is that there seem to me to be multiple Dem candidates who are very strong and supportive of Progressive issues including Elizabeth Warren and Beto O’Rourke (I think Warren should get a lot of credit for having so many detailed plans to reverse the plutocracy we live under now). I can’t wait for the debates and the campaign to really begin! While it may get a little ugly towards the end, I think it will be so refreshing and exciting to have so much public focus on Dems debating over genuine and urgent issues (compared with Trump’s attacks on most Americans and constant fear and hate inciting propaganda). This is why I’m suggesting that Dems consider “the vision thing”, as The New Frontier was. I think we’ll see some of that in these candidates, being frank about the severe problems Americans and the world are facing and real solutions for a better future. It seems to me that whoever wins the nom will have to have proven themselves as a great candidate, to beat the many worthy candidates in the primary. And while some are on social media already whining that if their favored candidate(s) don’t win and an opponent does, the Dems will lose and they may not vote for him/her, I think the momentum that a reinvigorated libralism gives the Dems will be the makings of another and maybe bigger Blue Wave in 2020. And I will be supporting whoever the nom is 100% because whoever it is will be supporting nearly all of the issues I support and the alternative of another 4 years of the cancer that is Trump, is unthinkable. In general, Americans are far too easy to propagandize, too many people are willing to believe what they see on TV or read on Twitter or Facebook. They don’t teach critical thinking in school so many folks out there basically choose the sources they’re going to believe and just accept as truth whatever that source says. The one thing that disrupts that behavior is suffering. If Americans are hurting because of Trump’s/the GOP policies, no Fox News host can convince them they’re making enough money when they can’t pay their bills or that they’re being taken care of by Trump when they can’t afford health insurance. They are right though, for many Americans, politics is about public perception over facts and principles. If Repubs claim Iraq as part of an “Axis of Evil” then when they attack it to steal its oil, many Americans will back them. This is why I wrote this article to push back on another widely accepted piece of propaganda, that Progressive views are “far left”. It’s Republicans on the right who have branded Progressives that way because they’re afraid that in a fair face off between Repub positions that favor the wealthy over 99% of the country and mainstream views that Progressives support, they wouldn’t have a prayer of winning. Repubs need a corrupt playing field to win. I think that the Dems running in the primary and the eventual nom could indeed set their own definitions for how they should be described. They can resist the dismissive categorizing and say, “The issues I believe in are the same that most of you want to see be implemented. Forget the label, focus on the actual issues.” Labels are by their nature, divisive. Us and them. There is an us and there is a them but feeding into that by accepting the labels others have established and apply. I am proud to be Progressive but that label isn’t what’s important. I completely agree with your thoughts on Bernie and Biden. I have grown a bit disinclined to see very old white men in power. Even though there is an ocean of difference between them and Trump, it is still playing into a power structure that needs to be remade. Age does not necessarily reduce one’s ability to make good decisions but how many great inventions and discoveries are made by 80 year old men? Denying that being 70 – 80 is not as ideal with the enormous pressure that comes with the job isn’t being honest. Biden and Bernie each have their pluses and minuses but neither can capture the imagination of Americans the way a woman or younger-than-mid-70s-man could. I can tell Biden has lost a step, he seems a bit less robust than he was. Bernie seems the same but he has taken many missteps and watching his allies try to savage Beto instead of promote Bernie has me less interested in him. I like that Sherrod Brown’s wife is so outspoken. After Trump, even the most outspoken Progressive is beyond legit reproach by Trump-supporting Repubs. I like him, I see him as more of a dark horse but I can see him growing support from Dems as the campaign goes on. As for Elizabeth Warren, I’m disappointed that she played the game Trump pushed on her, the DNA test and all, but I do strongly support her and agree that none of that will make an ounce of difference if she was to become the nominee. She’s the only one of them all who has taken on Trump aggressively, when she was supporting Hillary, and she isn’t intimidated by him. Warren conducts herself as an unshakeable fighter for regular people and comes off as fearless. I think she will be in the top tier of nominees. The only candidate who has a shot to be the “Obama” in 2020 (the fresh face that captures voters’ enthusiasm) of course is Beto O’Rourke. He comes into this process as a kind of rock star. However, we haven’t seen enough of him to truly know who he is, how he makes decisions and what some of his previous support for oil companies, Israel and opposing greater health care benefits to union members really means. The process, intentionally hampered by the DNC in 2016 to benefit Hillary Clinton, is very important this time around. Fortunately, this time there will be a proper number of debates (and not held on holiday weekends and during NFL games!) and we’ll get to know the candidates much better. One issue I didn’t include in the article though is the very annoying push by Never Trump Repubs and MSM hosts/pundits (like the insufferable Chris Matthews) who are working hard to push the notion that only a conservative/corporate/centrist Dem can earn the support needed to beat Trump. No. Dems won by 8% nationally in 2018 running some very Progressive candidates and yes, in conservative/Repub districts, some Dems ran to the right which is fine but they are the exception. This was a very Progressive Dem wave and the Dem base wants real change, not a wandering back to the centrist days of Bill Clinton. Hillary’s loss was unfair, between Comey and the Russians, the election was corrupted and stolen from her. Even so, 2016 exemplified that an old school centrist candidate is more vulnerable than an inspirational Progressive. So while I like him, I don’t think Biden is the answer. I think it’s much more likely that the Dem candidate will be someone younger and/or a woman. I can imagine that happening but I also think of a competing scenario where he just decides not to go because he doesn’t want to accept the reality he doesn’t want to be true. What also has to happen for the scenario you describe to happen is that far more detail about Trump’s criminal acts need to be made public (a televised impeachment hearing would accomplish that, not sure these other hearings would) so that Republicans in Congress could see the writing on the wall and turn on him (finally!) And as you say, they would still be vulnerable to prosecution by NY and other states and most importantly, civil judgements against all of them by Fed entities like the IRS should not be included. Only their criminal prosecution should be part of a deal. They shouldn’t be allowed to keep money they obtained through the commission of crimes. Pence led the transition and was brought in by Manafort, I’m sure Mueller has a lot of very surprising and damning evidence on Pence’s dealings with Russia and as part of the conspiracy to accept the bribe of Russian help in the election in exchange for removing sanctions against them. If that proof is there as I think it will be, he should be impeached and indicted as well. Then, as you say, the Repub nightmare of President Pelosi could come true. I didn’t address Pence in the article because I wanted the focus to be on the issue of removing a criminal from the WH, as opposed to clearing a path for Dems to take over the WH. It may happen in any case and if the cases can be proven against Pence too, they should be pursued. However, especially if Trump resigned then Pence was impeached and removed, we know that the RW would be whipped up especially by Trump, to call such a series of events “a coup” and Dems will be on the defensive through 2020. No one should be above the law and if Trump can be forced to resign then Pence can be proven to have committed crimes, he should be removed too but I can imagine violent protests of Trumpers as well as the commitment by Repubs to impeach every Dem that becomes president. I wonder if the least explosive scenario might turn out to be forcing Trump to resign and pursuing the crimes Pence may have committed while he finishes up Trump’s term, with the GOP in such disarray in 2020 that Dems easily win the WH and Congress by big margins. Trump is an immediate and existential threat, he needs to go ASAP. Pence is such a slimy liar and hateful person and he shouldn’t be above the law but I would be concerned about setting the precedent of installing a president that wasn’t voted in nationally. Because knowing the Repubs, instead of that happening again in the future due to circumstances, I can imagine them trying to engineer such a “coup” against Dems, framing or entrapping them to install their future House Speaker to get even.
