Putin Reveals His Syria Deal is a Sham…But It Still May Work

Kalima, there is a kind of juvenile quality to such a sensibility. A mature reasoning person doesn’t get in the car with a scary, sleazy guy just because he offers them candy.

Republicans and emoprogs though are a very different story.

Sue, the UN has neutered itself by allowing there to be Elitism in the organization, having 5 permanent members who can veto resolutions supported by 99% of the world is corrupt. As long as China and Russia are in a position to block action against their fellow tyrants and oppressors around the world, they will and the UN will be meaningless.

Agreed, Obama won’t agree to a worthless proposal and would use our veto in the UN to block it.

Syria said today that their demand is that the US drop all efforts to use military force AND that the US stop supporting the rebels with military aid. What gall! They massacre 1,500 people and their response to being threatened for using chemical weapons to do so is to demand the US make their opposition even more vulnerable to mass killings!

It’s negotiation is going to be torturous and in the end, it could indeed turn out to have been a manipulative hoax.

Kalima, what is bewildering is that so many Americans are so desperate to avoid attacking Syria, they have wiped their brains clean of all they know about what a brutal, cruel and oppressive dictator Putin is.

Er…weren’t we all just up in arms over the anti-gay violence spurred on by Putin and his anti-gay laws?

Weren’t we angry at Putin for jailing anyone and everyone who didn’t revere him or dared speak out against him including several young women who just sang songs criticizing him and his government?

Weren’t we appalled at how he outright stole his own re-election and the elections of his cronies?

Weren’t we pissed off that he blocked the UN from doing anything to stop Assad from massacring his own people?

Weren’t we annoyed that Putin sabotaged the strongest resolutions to stop Iran from becoming nuclear?

Aw, forget about all that, he’s really a good guy because he’s offering us lollipops and sunshine today!

People are so quick to delude themselves when they want something, it’s kind of frightening.

And Republicans are carrying Putin on their shoulders and showering him with verbal flowers and candy. No surprise that they would cheer on a tyrant who seeks to undermine America, they have so much in common.

But when Putin’s game is fully exposed and he is revealed to be the enemy of peace and other civilized nations, they will look ad anti-American as he will.

Can’t wait for the Repubs to celebrate Kim Jong Un next. What dictator in the Axis of Evil will be the GOP’s next BFF?

KT, I haven’t heard the Obama Admin offer any time frame but I would imagine that it is being discussed privately with Russia. The big issue on setting a time frame is figuring out how long it would actually take to safely remove all that hazardous material from the many different locations it’s stored, manufactured and hidden in.

No doubt, Russia will use that unknown to argue against any reasonable time frame and military action if a deadline isn’t met by Syria.

KT, for the time being, it looks like Obama will wait to see if a deal with Syria can be made so I don’t know that he will move quickly. Congress is holding off on a vote but they are discussing a revised resolution.

Agreed, it is likely that our spy satellites are keeping a close eye on how Syria may be moving equipment.

I sure hope though that the majority prevails in the U.N. and Syria is held to obeying a disarmament of chemical weapons…and Assad is brought up on charges by the ICC.

agrippa,if Syria signs the international agreement banning chemical weapons then it is enforceable. If the U.N. approves a resolution requiring Syria to give up its chem weapons and there is an enforcement provision, same thing.

But if it was just a voluntary thing, as Russia seems to want, it would be worth the paper it’s not written on.

Obama has plenty in common with old school Republicans like Teddy and Lincoln. Modern day Repubs have more in common with anarchists than any political party.

You’re right, the Repubs are completely bewildered by Obama because he is logical, compassionate and principled, three traits that are alien to them. S when they attack him, they use the only insults they understand, that is, they project all of their failings such as cowardice, dishonesty and incompetence on him. They have all committed to the 24/7/365 game of attacking and insulting Obama no matter what he does, from killing Bin Laden to rescuing the economy, no matter how good the results are from Obama’s actions, they (and the EmoProgs) must always try to twist it into something negative about Obama.

They simultaneously call him weak and a dictator, how could any rational person say both of those things simultaneously? Of course, that’s the thing, they are anything but rational.

And in the end, who is most like Assad? Who shows no concern for the suffering of their own people while they pursue selfish gains? Who lies shamelessly to the public and claims victimhood while assaulting those they see as adversaries? Who openly despises democracy and the right of all citizens to have equal rights? Who accuses those they attack of being guilty of what they themselves perpetrate?

If you generically describe Assad, you have the central themes for the RNC platform.

Hey empi!

So true, the emoprogs have been in a state of hateful euphoria over this, finally having Obama supporting something that the majority of Americans oppose, it’s a dream come true for them. So they rail about how awful Obama is and feel like at least for a few weeks, they’re not alone.

Who should we respect more, a President who lies the public into wars, is too fearful to confront mass murdering tyrants around the world or one who uses the threat of force as a tool to bring about a peaceful but meaningful solution?

What President in recent memory could be handling this better than Obama? I don’t think any of them.

CL – You’re so right, the credit for saving lives is trivial compared to the saving of lives. And the focus on getting credit is an egotistical venture which is not a familiar trait of Obama’s so while there may be some words here or there, I don’t expect him to vie for getting credit for this.

But we all know, neither Russia nor Syria would even be talking about such a deal if Obama was not threatening a military strike so in the end, isn’t it clear who is really responsible for this and who is acting purely out of fear and greed?

On MSNBC, their pundits keep spinning this as a Putin Party, that he is going to get all the credit and should. Why are they pushing such a dishonest or ignorant meme? I don’t know. Because the legit opportunities to hammer on Obama have been so few they dive at one that can look legit? Maybe.

One would have to be totally clueless about world politics not to know that Obama has been discussing ways to stop the massacres in Syria for a long time and such an obvious proposal would have been discussed previously.

So for sitting on this proposal for a year and allowing thousands to be murdered in the interim by chemical weapons in Syria, Russia is a hero?

In any case, you’re right, there is only a diplomatic solution in the Syrian civil war and perhaps this can be the first step of a path there so despite Putin seeing this as good for him because it can both protect Assad from retribution and stick a big finger in America’s eye, eliminating chemical weapons in that war and hopefully winding down the war are far more important than all of the political conflicts surrounding that.

I do think that was his most important and successful decision so far, going to Congress for a vote on a military strike on Syria. Had he not done so and just attacked Syria, it would have been madness here politically and who knows what would have happened in the ME.

It has been reported that there were those in Obama’s Admin, including Susan Rice, who believe that a strike is necessary so I’m not ready to say that Obama wasn’t leaning towards that position.

But because, for once, we have a President with critical thinking skills, he can take in new info and developments and change his strategy.

Games Theory 101: Syria, Russia outplayed

Murph, when one can only think in one-dimensional, in-the-moment ways, it is impossible to see the context and therefore the truth of anything.

The narrow minded GOP and emoprogs have no vision, they can only see and accept as reality what they can see at the current moment in time. To any reasoning person, it’s obvious that Obama had to be discussing the civil war and chemical weapons attacks in Syria with Putin. It’s also clear from the Snowden episode that Putin is bent on undermining what the US wants whenever possible.

For Syria to be forced into admitting all they have and expressing that they’d agree to giving up their chemical weapons, there had to be pressure from Obama over time and brought his threat of force.

So again, this all grew out of Obama’s decisions and in the end, could turn out to be the best of all possible outcomes. It wasn’t an accident and Putin didn’t suddenly have an angel whisper in his ear. This is Obama’s long game and those with small minds can’t see that.
