Bush set a terrible precedent that everyone is all to eager to follow. Opening more land for drilling, taking two steps back for every step forward on financial regulation, and some other things I can’t think of right off hand. I think those are bad things. But he’s also done good things. Things like health care and the stimulus package. The steps taken on the financial front during his early months in office. But they’ve also lost a lot of ground on that front since then. And I know some of that really isn’t his fault. You take the good, you take the bad, and at the end of it all you judge the entirety of it. It’s not time to judge him yet. **EDIT** But that’s not an attack on him. I don’t think he’s a “bad President”. I just think he’s made some bad decisions. This one included. It all just chips away at our basic rights. The ones we pretend are unbreakable but are broken all the time. And I don’t know about any conspiracy theories. I was just going on what I read and heard after the bill was passed. Not before it. A long time ago I would have also said it’s all just paranoia. But not anymore. Not after we’ve actually done the things I fear will become common practice. And then tried to change the rules to make it all legal. If I wanted to be condescending I would have answered you with a one sentence quip or pretended I had to explain everything to you. I would never do that to you or even presume to. I know you know. It’s why I read your blog posts. So I’ll know too. I just disagree. And there isn’t really much of an uproar here either. Not like this is leading every newscast. Or any newscast. But why does hat matter? I thought 2006 was wrong. I think the fact the fact the Emergency Powers Act is still in effect is terrible. I don’t understand why I can’t be angry about this. About the “security” vs. freedom issue. And what about the 4th amendment? It’s constantly circumvented by the FEDS. But the 6th amendment can be gotten around too,. As it has before. “Enemy combatants” don’t get fair public trials. This intends to make that applicable to American citizens and on American soil. And I’ve read the bill. It says they can detain anyone for any reason. Point at them, say “al-Qaeda” or “supporting Al-Qaeda” and lock them up without ever having to prove it. That is exactly what it says. The two amendments that would have made it illegal to do this to Americans and on American soil were voted down. I don’t think this is a small thing. WHERE does it define what “support” means? Imagine these broad definitions in the hands of a President you don’t trust. Senate Amendment (SA) 1126 would “clarify” Section 1031 to explicitly state within the section that the authority of the military to detain persons without trial until the end of hostilities does not apply to American citizens. [Update: Voted down 45-55] SA 1125 would limit the mandatory detention provision in Section 1032 to persons captured abroad, not in America. [Update: Voted down, 45-55] “The end of hostilities”. What does that even mean? You can leave as Jon Stewart said, “When terror surrenders”? This is a bad direction of us to be going in. I don’t know how you can’t see that. Now, I’ve been told that the bill is not as bad as it looks. Even though the 2 amendments that would have kept it from being used against Americans and on American soil were voted down. So now it can conceivably effect Americans. Then I was told that Dianne Feinstein put in a statement reading: “nothing in the bill changes current law relating to the detention of U.S. citizens and legal aliens,” However those who actually worked on the bill said it was purely a symbolic phrase and held little weight since the bill is effectively changing those laws. Feinstein knew this and that the two amendments were struck down. She voted yes anyways. Several authorities on military detention and the laws surrounding it seem pretty confident the measure will allow for it to be applied to U.S. citizens. But the funniest thing is, Obama will most likely veto the bill, even though his lawyers say not to, but, according to the Daily Show and Obama’s Press Secretary, he will veto it because he thinks the forced detentions don’t go far enough. Things are getting bad. Real, real bad. This whole Congress has to go. How he was the front runner at about the same point in the 2007-2008 campaign. 77% of Republicans polled said they would vote for him. He only trailed Clinton nationally and not by much. But, as you said, Newt’s failings are well known and Rudy’s were less so. The constant string of attacks put him out of it and he failed miserably in Iowa and New Hampshire.
