Can’t remember why I did. I think I just wanted to spend an entire day relaxing at the house catching up on shit. I turned the radio on, wake and baked, and someone said a plane had hit the WTC. I thought that was some crazy shit but I wasn’t rushing to turn the TV on. The immediate assumption was a terrible accident had just occurred. A few minutes later I turned the TV on to see how bad the hit was. I remember feeling real bad for everyone. What a terrible way to go out. I was hoping the fire crews could get whoever they could get, out quickly. About that time a plane comes flying in from the right side of the screen. Disappears for a second then the front of the second tower explodes in a ball of flame. That was a “Holy Shit!” moment. I was just 21. I grew up in the Clinton years. Everything was great and the world couldn’t be better! Muslim terrorists were the furthest thing from my mind. I pictured American pilots who were probably crazy. Then the Pentagon. Them reports of a plane bound for Washington going down in Pennsylvania. I could not grasp what was happening. it took a few moments for me to comprehend we were being attacked by outside groups. A few hours after everything ha happened, I went outside. at the time I lived about 500 feet from one of the busiest roads in the city. Restaurants and shopping centers all around. I remember how quiet it was. It was like everyone went straight home. The constant music from the steakhouse up the street was gone. And I remember irrational fear for my family. They weren’t going to attack Kentucky but I was just freaking out. This shit isn’t suppose to happen in America. That day sucked. It sucked real bad. And it’s been getting worse everyday for a fucking decade. How do you even have the words for the people who lost that day? How do you console the families of Flight 93, whose loved ones died heroes protecting this country and we’ve carried their banner into endless war and occupation? God bless the souls we lost that day and every day since. And God forgive the souls who think they are doing the right thing. I just really wanted him to press more. I think it’s the same problem I had with Tim Russert. Russert asked great questions. He just never had any good followups when the guest gave their answer. Rumsfeld would answer some questions, Fareed would press a little but then Rumsfeld would “set him straight” on things and they’d move on. Like the whole notion that the world is safer without Saddam Hussein. The world has gotten worse since he died. But it was just left to hang out there as though it were true. I think Fareed may have even agreed with him. Then they’re talking about his great strategy of a “lean, quick military which Fareed seemed to love. Was a total lack of armor part of that “great” plan? Some say Alien is his masterpiece but I lean toward Blade Runner. 4.)The Thing(1982) – One of Kurt Russel’s best performances and a movie that easily could have made my top 5 horror movies list. The effects, all practical, still very much hold up today. 5.)Ghost in the Shell – Anime director Mamuro Oshii’s masterpiece is a tense political action/thriller played out in a near future world where humans can move their consciousness to cyborg bodies.
