Get the barbecue fired up and light the fireworks, it’s The 4th of July Weekend so of course the theme of this weekend’s music thread is all about America, celebrations, freedom, independence and doing your own thing!
Nice video Fergie. Some of my favorites from the 60s and before. But I must ask, what’s wrong with John Wayne? He was one of my favorite actors.

Thanks KT, glad you liked! As for John Wayne, well maybe not the time or place. But briefly, he was for a while a member of The John Birch Society, a Conservative Republican, and a vocal supporter of the House Un-American Activities Committee. In a 1971 Playboy Mag. interview, Wayne said: ” I believe in white supremacy, until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility. I don’t believe giving authority and positions of leadership and judgment to irresponsible people …”
Not a real class act you might say. Sorry, you did ask!
Ha! I would hardly say “shattered.” I knew Wayne was a very strong supporter of the Republic of the United States. My father had the soundtrack album of Wayne’s failed film, The Alamo. In that album Wayne gives a rousing speech in honor and defense of the Republic and what he thought it meant to be a citizen of said Republic.
What I didn’t know about was his support for McCarthy and the HUAC. I guess his attitude was just formed by a different time than we enjoy now. A lack of enlightenment I would call it.
I have, and still do enjoy many of his films. My father was a huge John Wayne fan and I grew up watching all of his films.
The thought of eternal suffering is a significant motivator for those who are strong in their religious beliefs. It is also conducive to those who push various religious doctrines on their congregants to keep them in line.

Boston Fireworks Finale. Awesome!

Few songs are as American as this one. IMO
Tongue firmly in cheek!
Fergie1, that’s brilliant!
Yes, I know it’s John Wayne, but the other stars make this a great version (IMO!)

Huh, I did not know that. Sorry I asked. 😉
Sorry if I shattered your perceptions! 😆

I still enjoy his work as an actor, even today.
You’re forgiven, Fergie! Great actor but a dyed-in-the-wool Republican.
