Violent protests and looting erupted in the US town of Ferguson
after a grand jury chose not to press charges against a white
officer who shot dead a black teen. President Barack Obama and the
family of late 18-year-old Michael Brown separately appealed for
calm after a prosecutor said a grand jury had found the policeman
acted in self-defense. St Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Robert
McCulloch said Officer Darren Wilson had fired 12 times after
getting into an "altercation" with Brown, and that the jury had
found no grounds to file charges.

cars and businesses, several of which were later set ablaze, and
officers lobbed tear gas from inside armored vehicles to disperse
crowds Monday as violence overtook protests in Ferguson.

Buffalo Bills shook off the disruptions and routed the New York
Jets 38-3 at Detroit. The Bills missed days of practice as their
home stadium was buried in snow and the league elected to move the

and push it back one day. In Monday's regularly scheduled NFL
contest, the Baltimore Ravens defeated host New Orleans 34-27. The
Bills' game was delayed so the snow-struck squad could could have
an adequate chance to practice,but it was the Jets who appeared to
need extra work.
