Time Out for O/T – Vol. 2

HP really is a mixed bag. They have some of the best high-profile contributors in the country. They have senators, congress people, cabinet members. university presidents all writing articles for the blog sections. It’s remarkable, and they deserve credit for that. I think when someone has a point to push, they go to HP with the idea — and probably the correct idea — they they’ll reach a wider audience than if they penned an op ed for the Post or the Times.

That’s good to know.

Still, Olbermann apparently felt that the association w HP gave O’Donnell some stature, or he wouldn’t have mentioned it.

This is great, Hope. I’ve been to this site before, but I’ve never made it a regular thing. I may have to change that. His article on the Bin Laden tapes is an interesting take. You’d think something like that would have been picked up elsewhere, if just for the provocative nature of the idea.

To me, Arianna always looks like she’s really representing herself. She’s becoming the new Anne Coulter — and I mean that in all seriousness. I’m starting to think she gets invited on so many shoes because she’s provocative.

I don’t know how seriously her comments are taken. BUT… the Huffington Post is taken very seriously. I see more and more big names, like Lawrence O’Donnell, associated with the site. And more news outlets quoting their articles — which is particularly alarming since HP doesn’t do any real reporting.

He was surprisingly straightforward with them. I hope he gets utterly fed up and finds a way to make them completely obsolete.

That’s all we need. Another crazy opportunist in congress…

» Posted By nellie On January 29, 2010 @ 12:51 pm

Me too, I’m glad Cher is back.

» Posted By nellie On January 29, 2010 @ 10:30 am

Amazing that’s she’s going to the trial. Can’t wait to hear about it.

Brightest biggest full moon==maybe that’s why I’ve been feeling so crazy all week….

Sue, have you heard about how David Vitter may figure into this? Apparently, Vitter is holding up a nomination for a federal prosecutor:

One of the four men arrested for allegedly trying to bug Mary Landrieu’s office interned for Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) in 2007, according to his LinkedIn profile. The following year, Robert Flanagan worked as a paid intern for Republican Rep. Mary Fallin of OK. His duties included “brief[ing] legislative staff on issues of national security and international relations.” In the summer of 2008, Flanagan volunteered for Chris Gorman’s campaign in Shreveport, LA.

As you may have read, Robert’s father, William, is an acting U.S. Attorney based in Shreveport.

Randi Rhodes did an extended segment on O’Keefe on Wednesday. She talked about a lot of very suspicious connections in this case.

You’re not losing it… It’s there!

» Posted By nellie On January 28, 2010 @ 7:27 pm

Seriously — my head just spins when I read something like this.

» Posted By nellie On January 28, 2010 @ 6:56 pm

Thanks bito. I’d never heard that before. And I was at work and couldn’t really check it out.

But the Bruin doesn’t make a lot of mistakes. I wonder what they meant….?

» Posted By nellie On January 28, 2010 @ 6:54 pm

From UCLA’s Daily Bruin:

Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act put on hold in Senate for health care bill

However, if the Democrats decide to use reconciliation on the health care reform legislation, the two bills will have to be combined, since reconciliation may only be used on one bill per year.

This is something I didn’t know about reconciliation. So it seems that whatever health care reforms are going to be handled in reconciliation will be part of the budget package. So that means it will be perhaps April before we see health care reform finally passed in congress. The House has indicated it wants to wait for reconciliation provisions to pass before they would be willing to pass the senate bill.

You 39 yr-olds miss out on everything. 😉

» Posted By nellie On January 28, 2010 @ 3:22 pm

I mean, why disrespect a man on his death notice? Does that make any sense? What did Salinger ever do to Matthews? Except perhaps be more famous…

» Posted By nellie On January 28, 2010 @ 3:14 pm

And where are all of Matthews’s major works of fiction?

» Posted By nellie On January 28, 2010 @ 3:01 pm

I can put it back, if you want.

» Posted By nellie On January 28, 2010 @ 3:00 pm

Oh no…. This is terribly sad.

What a hero that man was.

Is there anyone to take his place….

» Posted By nellie On January 27, 2010 @ 4:32 pm

In the middle of a sql database — my brain is already taxed — I need lizard stories!!

» Posted By nellie On January 27, 2010 @ 12:13 pm

How did he stand still?

» Posted By nellie On January 27, 2010 @ 11:41 am

Of course, what you say is absolutely valid. What Tiger posted is absolutely valid. I’m not arguing that.

I just notice there is a tendency to throw around epithets that refer to African Americans that I don’t see thrown around to refer to other groups. Never saw the c word on this site to refer to sexism. Never saw the f word to talk about homophobia. Just sayin’.

» Posted By nellie On January 27, 2010 @ 10:25 am

What I’m saying — and I know people don’t intend any harm — but I’m saying this. When people want to make a point about gay rights, they don’t usually use the f word, or at least I don’t. People don’t use the c word to talk about sexism.

I’m just pointing out something for people to think about. I’m not trying to censor anyone. I’m just expressing my side of things.

Now I’ve got to get back to work!

» Posted By nellie On January 27, 2010 @ 9:11 am

I just can’t relate to the language or the ongoing use of it here.

» Posted By nellie On January 27, 2010 @ 8:50 am

Ok — I’m just going to say that I come here as a place where I can feel comfortable. And leave it at that.

» Posted By nellie On January 27, 2010 @ 8:48 am

Not what I’m talking about, though.

» Posted By nellie On January 27, 2010 @ 8:42 am

I’m not the one who changed the name of your article, Tiger99 — but I will say that as a person of color, hearing the endless use of racial slurs to make a point on the progressive side of the equation is debilitating. I don’t know if anyone else feels this way. I’d be interested to know other opinions.

On Stimulus, Nothing Fails Like Success for Obama

From PERRspectives:

As a dumbfounded Joe Klein of Time concluded, “nearly three out of four Americans think the money has been wasted. On second thought, they may be right: it’s been wasted on them”:

Indeed, the largest single item in the package–$288 billion–is tax relief for 95% of the American public. This money is that magical $60 to $80 per month you’ve been finding in your paycheck since last spring. Not a life changing amount, but helpful in paying the bills.

The next highest amount was $275 billion in grants and loans to states. This is why your child’s teacher wasn’t laid off…and why the fire station has remained open, and why you’re not paying even higher state and local taxes to close the local budget hole.

Congratulations, Moongal. This needs to be a trend that goes national.

If corporations are individuals, then let’s have them pay income taxes.
