A week ago today I crawled into the lifeboat, wet, half drowned, cold and hungry for some real conversation. It’s been a hell of a week SO! A very special Valentines Day greeting to You – “the old timers”, who went out of your way, you welcomed us, oriented us, sent us tips for posting, hell the “heads of state” even posted here like the rest of us. I never saw a comment from AH on HP (she probably would have gotten moderated for using her own name). Instead of viewing us newbies with wariness, you threw open the doors and I think today, a week later, is a great day because you one and all welcomed us with something we didn’t feel a bit of at HP – that’s called Love. Two of the three “loves of my life” were conservative in the IKE tradition and I dated another who was really far right. The politics were less important to me back then (and don’t go there, you know what I’m talking about). I think what separates them for me is the last part, the warm heart. The ones I knew were rather cold hearted, or at least lacking empathy and compassion. As for the far right one. Let’s just say I agonized but the differences I knew were there and finally walked away from were summed up when she sent me a FB friend request and I went to her page and was greeted with a photo album of her hunting wolves. I would stand in the living room screaming as ad after ad ran on endlessly decrying people and ignoring they have NO positions. I grew up with people actually putting their goals out there. I mean, I don’t know. I build furniture and I have to show people what I do not tell them how shitty my competition is. How far do I think I’d get if that’s all I did? I really believe the two party system has to end. I know that’s extreme but if both existing parties move right or left then what choice do people really have? We can argue about who’s more right or more against the people and pro business but I fear we are talking differences that in many cases don’t exist between party leaders. I’m not a political wonk. I just know the way things are simply sucks. When I saw the photos of the changes at Yellowstone Lake I almost fell over. It makes sense given how much stuff comes up from the ground there every day. She’s up and around but needs someone looking in on her, doing the cooking etc. Thankfully my son helps out as well. My younger sister has MS and can’t help. The other one lived far to the south. The two times a year she comes through is a living hell as she makes up for her guilt my micromanaging anything and everything, when she leaves town my son and I breath a sigh of relief. I had to get out, I kept telling myself I was the problem and when I left it would be all right. It wasn’t. I think that’s what tripped my trigger last night, memories of that and a couple of other things like that. So I was perhaps more strong in decrying their words and not thinking that clearly. It was odd to read it. I suspect some of the people decrying his revelation have been abused themselves and to see someone else with the courage to speak makes their own secret even more painful. On the other hand I suspect most of the posters have no clue about the pain and fear coming when you speak a horror from your life. Sexual abuse, rape, incest, racism, bigotry – the people who suffer it are still people. I could care less at that point about their religion or sexual preference or politics. I worked on a burn unit for many years. You said something like that when you first stopped in here. I have not forgotten that and probably it was your words that got me my first separation between conservative and trolls. I had lost the ability to see political leanings as a continuum; instead I had become all or nothing. If someone from the other “party” or stream of thought lost a child I would feel for them, regardless of what I thought about them (that was hard because my compassion for Beck, Palin etal would come grudgingly but it would be there). And yet, the comments were FULLY moderated, they let that shit through and scrubbed several comments of mine attempting to point out that people didn’t just throw out the “I was sexually abused” for making themselves more popular. One guy actually suggested Brown go down and register as a sex offender because “all people who have been sexually abuse are going to abuse” Others claimed the abuse had made him gay and he needed to come out and come clean on that. Sen Brown, not one of my favorite people just came out on 60 Minutes and admitted he was sexually abused as a child. OK, I’ve got some personal shit about that so perhaps I am overreacting. So I went into the comments and was just floored! I mean for every compassionate response there were dozens saying things that made me feel sick. As I read I became even more freaked out. What I can gather is there are three “teams” working there. True Progressives and old time HP posters, few indeed who are speaking to his courage and the tragedy. This is where it got scary There is a large number of low fan names I’ve never seen before who are making claims he’s trying to use the abuse to solidify his position since his approval ratings are down, he’s trying to sell books. You name it. And of course the “repubs” are responding by calling them out as hateful progressives as though they are trying to prove that liberals/progressive are more hateful than conservatives. It’s just fucking unbelievable. Am I being paranoid and not seeing the hatred we have inside us? Or is it possible that HP has set these teams out there, writing hateful stuff so other repubs can blame the vitriol on dems because why would any conservative make shitty remarks about one of their own. I tried to point out that he’s not a popular guy with the far right and the snark was more indicative of far right wing posters but most of my stuff got deleted. So this is Arianna’s final revenge? We leave en masse and she simply replaces “us” with people posing as progressives who are really from the far reaches of right? I must be tired because I can’t believe my speculation could be right.
