What I find interesting is the the excellent success against Al-Queda has been paired with an equally unsuccessful effort at rebuilding Afghanistan and fighting the Taliban. What’s frustrating is that in the battle against Al-Qaeda we have been employing the very strategies that most intelligence experts agree is the best way to fight a loosely confederated terrorist group…… ….then we rolled the kitchen sink into Afghanistan and set up camp, trying to remake a stone-age society into something it doesn’t want to be. Why can’t the two be separated? Not only in practice, but in policy and politics? They have less and less to do with one another every day. The Great Depression makes 2008-2009 look like junior varsity. I think much of Europe has built pretty rational systems not because they are smarter, but because they have had everything destroyed because of their historical infatuation with fascism, militarism, and ultra-nationalism. I’m not convinced that Americans will figure it out until everything breaks again.
