D-Day: My Dad and His LSM Bombarding Omaha Beach

Hi Miles, I was just a young girl when I heard about the Japanese internments, and it made me sick to think of how unjust our country was to the Japanese-Americans. It should not have happened. Thank you for your father’s service and that of so many other Japanese-Americans.

Thank you, Murph, for sharing your father’s words and experiences, and also for the text of President Roosevelt’s radio address. My mother and aunt worked in war plants that built planes. My father-in-law was a radio operator on a bomber that flew missions over Germany. My mother-in-law was a WAC clerk-typist.

We must remember always what it took to keep this nation, and the world, from being under the Nazis’ heel.

Nirek, I read that Bergdahl’s hometown is so small — 6,000 or 8,000 — that they could not cope with the crowds. This actually would be the SECOND year of a “Bring Bowe Home” gathering, but when they heard he was being released, it was changed to “Welcome Home” even tho’ they knew he would not BE there, yet. The chairman of the event said the town could not handle the crowds it would generate now that he’s free, whether they were + or – toward him.

Thanks for the link, Kalima. I see the NY Times reported that the homecoming celebration in his hometown was canceled (even tho’ Bergdahl will be unable to attend since he’s still in recovery or debriefing). However, in another story, someone in charge of the event said that the town is so small that it could not cope with the crowds expected if they went ahead with it, since his release. They made it clear that it was NOT canceled due to being ashamed of him.

Nirek, thank you for your service in Vietnam. I agree with you that Bergdahl could have been in a bad way psychologically and decided to take a hike. Whatever it was, he is still one of our own and has the right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty. I’m glad he’s back.

I so hear you, Murph. I was a member since 2011 at HP and like you, found it a haven to discuss what I could not in my red state surroundings. When I was scared to bits that Romney would beat Obama (Tee-hee! IMAGINE!!) several commenters reassured me with news of this genius Nate Silver and his analysis. Literally that made me able to sleep at night, and I couldn’t pass on the good news fast enough.

Just can’t do without intelligent discourse! It’s like oxygen. Thank you again for your help in showing the way outta HP.

Finally found my way to this article and a chance to say Thank you for the warm welcome and info on making a Gravatar. This new place will take some exploring! I may get lost. But I think I’m going to like it here. A huge Thank you also to you, KQuark and Kalima for setting up PlanetPOV before HP burned all our bridges.
