If Romney wins – he who signed the “investigate groups that supported GLBT rights” – I will leave the country. I’d have no other choice. I’ve spent far too long pissing off the religious right, and they will be embraced BY him even as he does not believe in them or their ideas theologically. They are just too, too useful to him. So we’d see a tremendous uptick in their power, a dimuntion of all of ours, and a conscientious decision on his part to root out liberals everywhere. I’m too old and too damned tired to take on that kind of persecution of good people everywhere.

Our only alternative will be a PPOV commune somewhere in Alberta…

I find it interesting that amidst the games, as you note Ad Lib, people are pushing back. Both the extremes want to “win” – and the average person just wishes to survive as a functioning person with a degree of efficacy and reasonable autonomy, living a calm life and raising his or her family with peace of mind.

I think the Game mentality – winner take all, voting off the island, you’re fired – is getting just too much for anyone sane to accept. Life is NOT zero sum. You can win and I can win, too. Better – it’s not even about winning but prevailing which is quite different. We ALL can prevail. We’ve done it before and can do it again. I read somewhere that science of brain functioning shows that the human mind works best in cooperative, NOT competitive, circumstances. Being able to rely on others is highly energizing to the individual.

Another writer (forget who) wrote that individualism and solitude are more creative than cooperation, but I think that utterly depends on what’s at stake. Beethoven certainly would not have created his works by committee. But is there not some balance here? Beethoven also could not have created his masterpieces if he’d had to hunt his food, build his fire, cook his food, clean himself, and build everything he needed all alone. Balance.

Americans, I think, are sick of zero sum games because deep down they understand that you cannot win when the deck is stacked, and you cannot prevail when the fix is in. It’s exhausting. What DO we get when we live via bumper stickers: “He who dies with the most toys wins.” Oh? Does said mass accumulator – who gets the toys stomping on others – have an ounce of joy? Are people of modest means who can play with their kids, hug their spouse, enjoy a backyard BBQ and the pleasure of a nice yard and who can band together with neighbors to help a widow or shut in – are they losers? Or are they the real winners? “Bowling Alone” noted our isolation and loss of community. It does NOT have to be that way.

We need elected officials who understand the common good and our hunger for it. We need leaders who can comprehend our desire for being part of the whole not being the sole survivor. We need leaders who also do not desire to be the sole survivor with us paying fealty to him or her.

Enough with the games. They are for FUN, not strategies for survival. I think officials running for office who can stand for a society of shared benefits, and who can show how that can be accomplished, will be elected. Time for a new way of looking at “success” – not as a single person’s rape-and-pillage conquest but as something we all can achieve in a nation that values the whole, not just the conqueror.

MSM Misleads in Telling the Story of Obama’s Personal Taxes

But that’s not accurate – you ARE taked on your Adjustable Gross income, and both Obama and Romney have the same types including investments.

The difference my husband and I pay in theory (gross) and fact (post deductions) is a significant (to us, not to Romney!) percentage difference AFTER deductions.

Obama paid 20.5% after adjustments and accounting for his preferential rates on certain types of income. His secretary may or may NOT have those types of deductions – if she does not own a house or has few charitable deductions from her much lower income, her rate will be higher than his.

He did not lie. Romney’s rate would be higher if his income were qualitatively different and he had fewer deductions for investment losses, etc. which are not readily available to ordinary middle class people. Buffet knows that, too – I am NOT seeing a lie at all. Obama knows the wealthier you are, the more you get to deduct in absolute and relative dollars. I pay less in taxes than I did years ago when my income was far, far less. That’s in total dollars AND in lower percentages, and I’m not remotely wealthy – just wealthier than I once was.

I also have culled Google to find some kind of story about this – and damned if I can. Obama’s effective tax rate of 20.5% seems to be agreed upon, and I’m just not seeing the problem here.

Anyone who wishes to say Obama “is just as bad as Romney” is a fool – Obama is working for greater tax fairness for working families. Romney is working for more in his and his cronies’ own pockets. End of story, IMHO.

eldave – first, welcome to the Planet. We’ve not met before!

Second – the book sales would have been taxed MORE as self employment income. I have three books in print and get royalties on two, so that tiny – and I mean tiny – amount gets calculated HIGHER than earned income and certainly any investment capital gains. What I meant was that he accumulated some capital, invested it, and THAT was taxed at the ridiculously low rate which may have served to reduce the overall.

I’m not ever interested in the tax rate on gross income but on adjusted income. If he lowered his rate by donating to charity or whatever he did, then he has huge benefits that made his EFFECTIVE rate 20% or thereabout. That is not a lie.

That is what is behind all this absurd talk about raising rates on “productive income” that the GOP prattle on about. Raising rates on those earning $250K or more is on the adjusted gross income that exists AFTER employers have taken all their deductions for employee expenses including taxes, health care contributions, payroll, capital investments, etc. No one pays on the gross unless they’re idiots. You have deductions. I had a small business for several years – it was AFTER deductions that the taxes were calculated. It always is.

So if the gross income rate would be 30-some percent, it’s inaccurate to call the effective tax rate after deductions “a lie” perpetrated by Obama and the White House. It’s simply not true. His point, as KQ notes below, is that Obama had access to deductions his or Buffet’s secretary would never have that lowered the effective rate below what she has to pay. That’s honest.

I don’t see how his rate could be 33%, and different income IS taxed differently, so his investments from book sales etc.capital investments would be taxed much lower perhaps averaging out to 20%?

BTW – I’ve read and heard absolutely nothing about this anywhere, so I’m unaware of this being more than a blip first heard HERE. We are not insignificant, but we aren’t CNN either. I’m not worried.

Cronkite, Murrow, et al. would not tolerate such inane posturing. Questions are the lifeblood of reporting, and unless and until we get someone with the heart of a journalist instead of a “star” to anchor these programs, we will NEVER get information, only propaganda.

BTW – this was determined back in the mid 1970s to be the GOAL for newspapers and TV. In “The Crisis of Democracy” limits on a free press were advocated as a critical factor in promoting global capital. That book was written for the Trilateral Commission – and it has all come true.

Obama is responsible for errant Secret SErvice people? Oh? Seems to be they betrayed HIM. They were advancing for his visit, and their behavior could have serious implications if they were diverted from duty by it.

Now we have to worry about this trip. I have, for various reasons, long believed that the Jonestown Massacre was NOT propagated against Cong. Ryan BY Jonestown people. (Long story I’ll explain some day). Ryan had pissed off some very powerful people in South America all allied with CIA extremists. It would have been the perfect set up since Jonestown would take the blame – as they did, and as Jim Jones knew would happen when he heard of the shootings. He took the easy, cowardly way out I think – but I worry that he did NOT have Ryan killed and that the real perps went free.

I will be very worried until the President is safely home again. This dereliction of duty has me deeply worried.

Obama, like Clinton, has made many references to his status as the privileged recipient of tax breaks. Obama has said repeatedly that this is unfair, and how HP could NOT be impressed with the responsible way that the Obamas spend their money saved by the tax rate is beyond me. They provide vastly more in donations than do most Americans of their tax bracket – Santorum gave 1% I believe. They are honorable people, the Obamas.

The worst legacy of the Bush years? Eternal determination to find scandal everywhere, even without facts. This is a case in point. Whatever our elected leaders do, we will scream it’s somehow a betrayal of…well, we don’t even know. How utterly stupid and exhausting this is. We can’t even see progress and honor when it’s right under our noses.

Kalima- MMNBC showed the comment made almost no dent in the polls they had. Women overwhelmingly support Obama. Period.

What amazes me are the numbers of men supporting Romney who has it in for them. He has no interest in even middle class white males – they are just fodder for corporations, and they are to be sacrificed when bottom liners so decree. Are white males THAT racist or starry-eyed rich wannabes? Yikes.

Women and children have been the bellwethers for what will happen to men. Since the beginning of the nation, what occurred to women and kids, dragged into the capitalist workforce and exploited, soon became the only standard for all working people, male or female. Men have to pay attention to what’s occurring to women – it’s soon the be their own fate. There is not one single thing that the Right throws at women that will not become generalized. Once the Right wins the abortion and contraception issue, then – trust me on this – mandatory and complusive control of ordinary male sexuality (forced support of kids, outlawing of condoms, etc.) will soon follow.

The low pay for women – never mind Lilly Ledbetter Act – is being taken care of. Corporations already are lowering wages of males to equal females. That’s not true at upper reaches, but it is true for working men. How else do you explian the stubborn stability of the median income at about $26,000 from 1973 to the present? DAvid Cay Johnston in “Perfectly Legal” showed the refusal of wages to budge in absolute dollars between 1973 and 2003. Equal pay for equal work was not supposed to mean DOWNWARD pressure on wages, but that has occurred. Men – pay attention.

It ought to make sense to support the person who has your back rather than the one who is sticking a knife in your back. Good sense, however, has not been a clear part of voting in, well, can’t remember how long.

Men, especially white men, wake up. One candidate cares about you. One could not care less. The choice is clear, and if you pay no attention, please don’t whine in 2013.

I got it, Murph – not a problem.

Our lives are similar, Bourne, though mine was led for long periods back east.Began working inner city boys and girls clubs and discovered early in my life that my white messianic impulses were neither needed nor desired within Black communities. Best lesson EVER. So from age 19 on, I learned to ask – what do you need, how can I help and to learn FROM communities what they understood about, yes, that “second hand” life. VERY well said. Grateful, snort. Yeah, right.

Most of my existence has been around the Black community’s work to get out from under police oppression etc., and then WITH them working for women’s rights and labor rights. I walked many a picket line, made soup for the regulars while filling in for them while they ate, and generally working on new ways of fighting the fight. Once beat Henry Kravis, KKR and RJR/Nabisco and kept a plant open and operating by threatening (and we inteded to DO it) to have an employee buy out. That meant opening the books to the union – and a settlement quickly followed to avoid that. My happiest moment!

I taught mostly adults (though I did substitute in high school and grade school in a couple of newly desegregated Southern schools. Very weird experience, I must say. Not bad, just weird.) I loved teaching union folks – did it for 15 years for Cornell’s Industrial and Labor Relations program. They are the salt of the earth, those marvelous people who get global capitalism way beyond what most Americans will ever understand. GOP contempt for working men and women makes me screeching crazy.

So yes, we have great similarities, equal lack of tolerance for faux liberal BS, and a desire to see right done. Glad to know you!

Bourne – I don’t think we’re in disagreement at all. I am in agony over people who’ve lost employer-backed care, and I know via several of our friends here and those to whom I’ve sent to the High Risk Pool that ACA is a lifeline for so many people! Yes – only 20 states have the PCIP, and one of the ironies is that it is MUCH more expensive (at least here in CA) than the High Risk Pool per se. You can get to either plan via http://www.healthcare.gov. The federal plan – a PUBLIC OPTION tah dah – is simply wonderful and about 40% of the cost of the PCIP with much lower deductibles and copays.

My focus on my friend’s son is actually an “argument directed at SCOTUS” and not my beef (though I am peeved at the kid who is now a grown adult, thank you.) He had the money – he elected not to pay. That is not uncommon, but it is NOT the issue for the majority of Americans. They want health care coverage but CANNOT pay or simply cannot get covered through private plans.

I have not yet found anything to dislike about ACA. What is coming is fantastic, affordable, accessible, accountable, and inclusive. The one gaping hole is coverage for families with undocumented members, and that partly is aided by the huge expansion of community clinics that “will not ask, so for Pete’s sake don’t tell.” I fear it won’t help those needing major medical intervention, but this nation will HAVE to get over itself on immigration before we can be a truly just society.

I hope the venality of some of the conservatives – looking after their own tax issues – will move them to rational agreement that ACA and the mandate need to stay. We are already paying for uncompensated care but through the most expensive and inefficient means of doing so after high charges are raked up. It is vastly more credible to stingy people’s concerns that we do it up front before charges are rung up for the uninsured.

But if they pick the Ron Paul “let ’em die” health care “program”, this nation won’t be worth a bucket of warm spit. You might have seen that Cal Expo hosted a free medical clinic a couple of weeks ago, and had I known enough in advance, I’d have been adamant that they had to pass out “healthcare.gov” and “healthyfamilies.ca.gov”
links to every single person to get them enrolled in what’s already on the table.

I do know Del Paso. My office is in the general vicinity out Auburn near Winding Way in what I think it the Arden Arcade area (never have been entirely sure where the hell I am!) Glad to “meet” you and know you’re part of this effort! Glad as well you’re “on the Planet”!

Bourne – very interesting assessment of the existing federal plan. I gather we live in the same area and you get SUTTER which was dropped from MY Blue Shield as too expensive. I have UCDavis which is fine if rather impersonal. Oh,well…

Today the ACA is actually better for lower income folks I think – lower deductibles, lower out of pocket than you’re paying. The premium (borrowed directly I think from CA single payer) is on a sliding scale of 1-9% depending on income from 134% to 400% of the Federal Poverty Level.

That’s an amazing subsidy very different from “Romneycare” that gave a flat premium subsidy and danged what it cost you as you got older, lived in the wrong place, etc. If the government gave you a credit of $200 but you had the marked incivility to be older and female and your premium was over $900 – well, toots, YOU have to make up the $700. And in exchange for the GREAT subsidy you ALSO had a $5000 deductible and an additional $10,000 out of pocket if you got sick. That’s an additional $15K per person per year. In MA too many people are using this as catastrophic care because they cannot dip into the deductible, they do not have the money.

ACA exempts dozens of things including colonscopies ($1800-3000 per test) from your deductible. People can use Obamacare, where they could NOT use Romneycare, to stay well or catch things very early such as pre-cancerous polyps that get removed and prevent harm.

The one thing I think does resonate with SCOTUS is the issue of health care as our obligation to one another. It is the only thing we are MANDATED to provide – we will not allow hospitals to dump you by the side of the road if you’re uninsured. BUT when you cannot or will not pay – WE have to. The forced payment via increased premiums or taxes that we all pay for uncompensated care is astronomical. Unless we want the Ron Paul audience’s “let him die” standard for America, the government can ask that people take personal responsibility NOT to be burdens on society.

What amuses and amazes me is those who think “you can always go to the ER” is perfectly fine where “I’d never take charity” they boast. Well, dumping your health care costs on us IS taking charity, is living off us, is dodging your obligations, IS a form of “welfare fraud”. The son of a friend got into a fight and broke his jaw – went to Kaiser that fixed him, no question, and set up a payment plan. And he skipped. He only had to pay $200 per month – but he preferred to bar hop rather than pay his bill. He drank that much up in a week. But it’s “unfair” to expect him to pay. Uh-huh. Right.

So I think the justices – at least some of them – got it. The intolerable burden of the uninsured passing their costs onto us is something even Roberts, Kennedy, and EVEN Alito alluded to or said outright. I’m hoping they realize that THEIR great health care might not survive if we don’t get people to accept their own weight in this health care debate. For alleviating that societal burden the government has every right to require that we accept our own responsibilities for our own health care coverage.

But – we shall see what the Great Minds of todays’ SCOTUS believe is the bottom line for government and the rest of us. But if they overturn the mandate they have JUST unleashed the era of absolute irresponsibilitiy, and for even most of these lightweight minds, that might just be too much.

Thank you for wading the waters of federal health programs for federal employees. I have a much better sense of it all thanks to you! But I AM peeved you get Sutter and I don’t! Rats!

Another “Chosen One”? W actually thought HE was – his conversion under Franklin Graham led him to that chutzpah (not pronounced Chootz-puh by another person who thought SHE was the Chosen.) Sarah, Mike, Pat Robertson, Jimmy Swaggert…the list is very long these days.

Y’know it’s getting so that there is such a field of the Chosen, the Elect, the One, the Only, the Whatever, that I believe it is incumbent upon me to declare – I AM NOT THE CHOSEN ONE.

There. Don’t you feel better already? That ensures you that at least ONE person is not vying for whatever it is these self-designated prophets are vying for. I imagine you all feel the same. I like the idea of all of us who are the NON chosen all kind of moseying along, trying to make life a bit better, smelling the roses and planting tulips or something.

And keeping ALL the “chosen” out of power, out of our bedrooms, out of our lives. and especially out of the White House.

AdLib just told me about the quake – beyond scary AGAIN. Are YOU OK? First Japanese bureaucracy yesterday, today Japanese tectonic insecurity. Sure it’s not time to move back home???? I can’t recall the UK ever having a quake! OK – bad bureaucracy, sure, but earthquakes? No.

I just wonder whether, as Sally articulated below, it isn’t important to call the bitch out whether it’s on The View or at Fordham. What I’ve seen over the years – and been guilty of doing – is shoving reactionary ideas into the dark. When that happens, the perps think they’re victims and cohere into things such as the Freerepublic and Tea Party. If we stand up to them in the bright light, MAKE them account for the tissue of lies, they have been heard, challenged, and shown to be false.

Whoopi did that. More of it needs to be done. Ann got challenged by (I am going to forget his name) Deutsch on one of those financial programs when she said “Jews need to be perfected” and he, a Jew, really backed her up against the wall MAKING her say whether she thought he was inferior. She really got flummoxed by that. I think she did not know he was Jewish and suddenly – deer-in-headlights time!

When the prochoice community refused to talk with the anti-abortion people, when they shouted them down or turned ugly against them, they got hardened. People DO. Who wouldn’t?

When, over the years, prochoice escorts – the folks on the sidewalks dealing with protesters – began having non-hostile conversations, it was amazing how fast they all went away. OK – they left us with the hard core, but the numbers went down, and civil interchanges cooled things out hugely. It matters.

Then the hard core cannot actually defend its position well. We needed to hear the Rape Guys out. Sunshine withers them on the vine.

I know Fordham is private, they are entitled to their choices, and I’m not upset they ditched Ann per se, but I think a lot of good could have come from her addressing Christians with her rants and having her forced to defend all the crap she says. I just think it’s an opportunity missed.

My closest ally in the faith world of political advocacy is Catholic. We do not agree on sexual justice issues. But we DO agree on everything else, and that, plus similarities in our senses of humor, lets us discuss the tricky things with warmth, compassion, love, and civility.

I try to bring that to bear on others. I find the hardest people with whom to deal are mind-blocked Lefties who actually repudiate their own values to make sharp, nasty political points.

Murph’s experience with the Lysistrata Ladies who came over to McCaskill, is a perfect illustration of civility – they agreed to work together for Claire, and the Dems at the HQ respected the women enough not to proselytize for Obama. Thus a really wonderful and compassionate set of relationships has been born.

We will never convert people by thumping them. Some views deserve anger – they are just mean. But most are born of values we MIGHT share but express differently, and that is worth taking time to dicuss.

Years ago as I expressed this concern, someone angrily said would I extend this “compassion” to Tricky Dick. My reply was the chances of ever having to meet him were slim to none. It was not an issue. By hyperbole we cannot set standards for the commonplace. Civility really helps if only to defuse the anger. Priceless.

I think this is quite civil and civilized, but how would we all feel if they rejected President Obama on the grounds that his belief in LGBT equality and women’s reproductive freedom did not square with Fordham’s. One of the retired faculty is the father of a woman who abetted James Kopp, and I feel QUITE sure he thinks Obama is the devil incarnate.

I think these things are very tricky because conformity of views means you do not question the opponents to those views. In a way she is getting off scott free. She should be queried vigorously about her “Christian values” in a public forum of faith people. She NEVER has been called to account for those positions she holds. I think I’m sorry they will not hear her out – and pin her to the wall for what she says.

An ally said that her organizing ability was often stymied by Boomers (I am one) who can’t get over themselves and think they invented the sunrise.

But, she admitted, HER generation was raised on “Free to Be You and Me” and constantly have to be petted and assured that they’re “special”.

Kalima and kes – I think this article is indeed silly. Narcissism IS the pathological side of self respect. Nothing at all wrong with the latter, that is the essential part of being a strong person, but when the focus is obsessively on self and not self-with-others it is corrosive.

He’s silly to imply that because the WORD altruism is recent that the idea is also recent. Selfless love, pursuit of justice for others,or any version of commitment to the common good is as old as philosophy and religion. The corrosive side of that is self-abuse or denial in the effort to “prove” one worthy of god’s/gods’love or some other desired standard. Then it becomes, yup, narcissism, not love freely given.

I loved the commercial some many years ago about people at a party all talking AT others but about themselves. One woman says, “Well, enough about me. Let’s talk about YOU. What do YOU think of my outfit?”

Nailed it. Narcissism at its best.

G’morning AB and Kalima – in keeping with the international character of the Morning Report, I’d like to note that “Louie, Louie” is featured on a tape of Moroccan music played as background music at one of my fave Sacramento restaurants. I’m not sure anyone else has picked up on it, largely because of the difference in instruments, but it cracks me up every time I hear it.

Oh Kalima, I’m so, so sorry this has happened. It matters not at all that it’s part of the infinite turning of the earth and the normal way of events. It’s a hole in the fabric of your own life, one that will gradually become less apparent, but never really gone. We all send you our love and healing energies and care. I hope the warmth of memory carries you through this hard time. You are in our hearts.

I thought you owned where you now are and were moving out of the town! Now this makes a TON of good sense! What a marvelous idea – I did that back east where houses were around, oh, $40,000 (yes, GOOD ones) and it was more doable. This is a great time to buy indeed, so I salute your excellent judgment.
