I have to pull myself away to try and remember why I went in the first place. PS — if there are any in your area or anyone elses — please don’t go to Petland. I’m not sure how far they go outside of Ohio, but they are notorious for selling puppy-mill pups. I know it must be tough for you to let the “dorks” go, and I absolutely admire your dedication. A few tears from you coupled with the tolerance from your own “kids” certainly beats the alternative outcome. I volunteer for a no-kill cat shelter here in Columbus, OH http://www.catwelfareohio.com/. We also have foster families and as of yet, I’ve not been able to foster any kitties because I know I wouldn’t want to let them go. I do have 3 rescues of my own and go to the shelter on weekends just to hang out and socialize with the residents. The more social they are gives them a paw up to finding a forever home. Every time I go, I just want to bring all of them home with me. My human kids laugh and call me the “crazy cat lady” and it does make for great conversation! Hood deployment: Although I admire the grit and dedication of these men and women, I cannot believe the powers that be are making them go. Seems to me their time would be better spent with their families (if possible) and the opportunity for additional counseling/therapy if desired. Food Banks: I’ve heard of heifer.org and every year I promise myself to donate in some way, but my bad and never follow through. On the other hand, I have found many good causes through http://greatergood.org/ — Literacy (important to me because my daughter teaches Kindergarten), Women’s Health Issues, Child Health Issues, Animal Rescue, and several other meaningful areas. What I like about it most, however, is donations can be gifts for friends & family. And…there are more opportunities for programs here in the US — which I think are often neglected. However, when I wrote my piece, I wasn’t deleted or banned; I was very surprised. I must say that over the last several months the whole place has made a U-Turn from what drew me in to begin with. I believe AH is far less hands on now than she was in the beginning. The face of the site is no longer her, but the minions now in charge. One can’t be running all over the country, granting interviews and opining, and tending the fire at home. Any family can ultimately suffer from neglect. It’s a shame, but I believe it’s all about the $$$ and mirroring the awful tabloid mentality of much of our society.
