America’s Civil War

Hi Adoni, and thanks for your CW post.
I came across a quote I thought POVs might like:

“What a cruel thing is war: to separate and destroy families and friends, and mar the purest joys and happiness God has granted us in this world; to fill our hearts with hatred instead of love for our neighbors, and to devastate the fair face of this beautiful world.”
(Robert E. Lee, from a letter of 1864 to his wife.)

Also, one of my favorite writings on the war is: “The War Prayer” a powerful but brief story by Mark Twain – who specified it shouldn’t be published until after his death as he felt it was too controversial. I think many readers would be moved by it…

Just checked out huffpo to see what the baggers had to say; same old, many complaining they’d haves to see the body to believe Obama, would it make gas prices go down etc. etc.
So I thought of the true story of “Rain All Day”

I’m a frequent visitor to one of our nursing homes, and one of our most memorable residents was a very sweet lady – who no matter what one said to her – would reply, “Rain All Day”. It was her mantra, and she repeated it with gusto whenever she wasn’t sleeping. People would open the curtains to show her the sun, turn on the TV for the sunny weather forecast, show her the newspaper… all to no avail, it was still, “Rain All Day, Rain All Day, Rain All Day”

The point of this story is that there’s way too many “Rain All Days” out there now, repeating their mantras ad infinitum – and many claim not to have dimentia. What a miserable way to spend one’s life, not to mention repelling all those around you.

Thanks to our President, our brave Navy Seals, the CIA and everyone who played a part.

Is Donald Trump a Stalking Horse?

It’s true that the Strumpet Trumpet is a huge egomaniac; but nothing sensible can explain this fairly late coming Birtherbs from him – perhaps because it’s just plain nonsensical.

(curtsy) thanks, adlib! (my first one was on Scott Walker; my total disgust with him just had to come out somehow… since I couldn’t go to WI to protest, it came out in a limerick!)

» Posted By bettybp On April 27, 2011 @ 5:14 pm

Hi, escriba! I too wondered it all that loud “Trumpeting” was merely to make the other Tbominations look good (not good, but not as off the walls as Trump) – taking into consideration that Bachmann and even Jan Brewer have actually backed away some.

Sometimes, when the prospect of TPubs becomes too horrible to contemplate, I amuse myself with silly little limerickys. The one for The Donald:

There once was a critter named Trump
Whose words to the throat brought a Lump
The Donald thought it was Admiration
But to us it was Perspiration –
For the Donald is truly a Hump!

Huffington Post: The Not-So-Sweet Smell of Success

After reading this, just checked Huffpo front page – sure enough, Jason Linkins has a post, “Nobody is sure Joe Biden’s New Deficit Task Force Has a Point”… read a couple pgs of comments, the usual TPub haters, with some brave libs protesting.

» Posted By bettybp On April 23, 2011 @ 8:52 am

Wow, thanks! I for one don’t consider Ms. AH progressive, and judging from a lot of huffpo recent comments, I don’t think that there’s a big majority that still do. When she does an article, she seems to be mostly ignored.

» Posted By bettybp On April 23, 2011 @ 8:35 am

an excellent article; I’ve been on Huffpo since late 2008 and also have witnessed many changes – although I admit until just lately I’ve enjoyed the give and take banter on both sides.
Since the AOL takeover though, the tone has changed severely, and the right wing TPub posters have become increasingly more hostile. Huffpo moderators seem to favor the right wingers – Just a couple of examples: A person(?) named GodGunsBible with an avatar of a bible with a Gun on top, brays: Oh, yeah Libs we’re here to stay, we gonna straighten you out. Another boasts “O-bortion in 2012”; yet another, LockPiatt, who’s fond of quoting founding fathers with a weird T-slant, return posted “Why don’t you post your IQ?” then went on to say he was sure it was not as high as the Tpubs/Trump.
Though these comments were flagged, they don’t seem to have been taken off. These TPubs often have low fans, and change their name regularly it seems – the Craig’s list paid posters are making out like bandits, and their goal is to completely take over the site.

Note that Rachel Maddow this week commented that there was little news about Lib protests in the media; she mentioned Daily Kos for Libs and then said something like Huffpo, “not so much anymore”.
The main reason many are reluctant to leave is that they don’t like being driven away like so many Sheeple by these agressive bullies.
There’s still some strong lib posters that are trying to hold out – but sadly it’s more and more nonsensical. If they can drive people out of the media, and even a site, what’s next? The whole country?
Who’ll pay the top 2% and corporate buds taxes then?

McCarthyism: Rule by Fear

Adoni, very well done article, and kesmarn, very true about the dark side of the decade.
My favorite part of the McCarthy saga,I remember from my father’s excitement when he watched the McCarthy hearings on TV. He was overjoyed when Joseph N. Welch squelched McCarthy with:
“You have done enough. Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have you No sense of decency?” Dad and I watched the room erupt in loud cheers for Welch – and it was considered the coup de grace.

Wisconsin and Learning from Our Mistakes

Re Supreme Court & “Citizen’s United”:

It’s almost St. Paddy’s day, and my sister Nancy and I have been Limericking, and thought this might please PlanetPov readers:

Oh, There once was a very Supreme Court

Whose goas was to cut all our throats

After a terrible Babble

Down went the Gavel

Now We the Sheeple

are left with No Hope

A Limerick for WI Protestors!

Oh, Scottie’s the Worst of his Kind

He thinks he Infallible
But to the Kochs he’s So Malleable
Anything for them he will Sign.

Wisconsin, what does it really mean?

I’ve seen a lot of right wing posts on other sites blasting the teachers in Wisconsin for not caring about the children because they’re not hotfooting it back to the classrooms.

Well, I say the teachers are teaching their kids one of the best lessons anyone could learn. They’re protesting not only for themselves but the whole country including the children. They’re giving their all for a better future for everyone in not losing the unions’ right to collective bargaining. They’re attempting to insure future generations will not become puppets of omnipotent corporations with no recourse of any kind.

Thank you Wisconsin, protestors, dem legislators and supporters for showing America we can do it.

“All that serves labor serves the nation; all that harms is treason. If a man tells you he trusts American but fears labor he is a fool. There is no America without labor, and to fleece one is to rob the other.” A. Lincoln

» Posted By bettybp On February 21, 2011 @ 8:02 am

I’m really MAD. Huffpo deleted a quote from ABRAHAM LINCOLN on Labor. I just can’t believe it – here it is, you be the judge:

“All that serves Labor serves the Nation. All that harms is Treason. If a man tells you he trusts America, yet fears Labor, he is a Fool. There is no America without Labor, and to fleece the one is the rob the other” A. Lincoln

I even used “tree*son” and f*O*ol to get it through, but no luck. Truly disgusting.

Great article, thanks. I think many people have been feeling the same way for a very long time; hopeless that there’s no way to really stand up to the injustices that the average person has been slapped in the face with. Wisconsin has shown us differently, we applaud their courage and their tremendous will to not let t-pty Walker ride roughshod over their rights. btw, when Sarah Painlin told the protestors that they’d have to sacrifice – what did SHE mean by that – she doesn’t know what the word means; she didn’t even want to “sacrifice” the high end clothes she bought in NY when she was running for VP (which still makes me shudder to think about)

Employment at Will…what does it mean?

thanks upstatesc – I believe it’s your second option “or don’t care about it…” is the right one – or perhaps it goes deeper…

As Rachel has commented, the purpose of the RW’s attempt to kill off the unions before the 2012 elections is so the unions won’t be able to make significant contributions to the left/progressives – and as the unions are the main ones that do make significant contributions to the dems, this will leave the righties a clear field for MASSIVE republican ad campaigns with not much ability to respond from the left…(keep in mind the horrible impact of citizens united as well)

thanks for an excellent, though provoking article, abbyrose, and good luck with your masters.
these are indeed dark days for the middle class, and the brightest spark I see lately is the People of Wisconsin!

Proud To Be Liberal By Brian Elroy McKinley

I’m a big fan of FDR, and he made this wonderful statement about the opposite of a liberal:

“A conservative is a man with two perfectly good legs, who, however, has never learned how to walk forward.”
