Thank you very much, KQ, this is a great post…and exhaustive. Having been in the hospital 3 different times, I both relate to and agree with what you say. Asking questions of doctors is key…crucial, really, for, as you say, it’s your body, not theirs… but so many patients are just too shy. I think that that is in part due to the fact that, generally speaking, doctors exude authority. A kind of medical omniscience…

The very fact that hp is doing two and three, sometimes even four negative articles per day about Obama is itself strong evidence that someone over there is on a mission.

I really don’t have as much experience with these kinds of things, I am young to politics.

I will tell you one thing, and my lack of experience should not negate what I say, because what I will say isn’t about experience, it’s about (1) common sense, and (2) a pattern hp has developed. Here it is. If Planet goes after hp, as Planet, hp will go after Planet. You can count on that. And they would hit hard.

Whereas if we did it as former hp posters but not under the Planet umbrella, they would not know where to hit.

Look at the pattern: at how hp has gone after Obama. You don’t think Ari would just lie down for this, do you? Not that that should stop us, but it could mean all-out war.

Anyway, I, too, think Nellie’s idea is a good one, even a great one. But she did ask at the end of her post: ‘What do you think?’ and all I have done is answer her.

to boomer: thanks for your words and for posting AdLib’s idea about all this.

Let me put it this way, i.e. this is what I was thinking. If we were to do this as individual former hp posters, without naming the new site we have gone to, I think that would have more weight than if we were to do it as PlanetPov posters.

Imagine (I say this next just to make my point) if a bunch of posters at Daily Kos were to do this letter thing about hp. Some might say, “Well! Daily Kos just can’t stand it that hp is becoming the go-to, becoming the site to visit! They are just bad-mouthing hp out of envy (sour grapes)!’

That is all I meant. If people thought the letter was coming from a rival site, one that is in competition with hp, they might indeed think what I said above. Then they might shrug at the letter, i.e. not take it seriously enough.

(Don’t say: ‘But abby, we are not even trying to compete with hp!’ To say that would be to take my use of ‘compete’ much too literally. Even if the letter was swimming with details, with concrete instances of almost criminal behaviour on the part of hp, they still might take it as some kind of plot to malign hp, all because Planet is another site… a competitor, this no matter how different in nature a site Planet is from hp.)

What do I know, though? You all are much more experienced at these kinds of things than I am, I will bow to your greater experience. And anyway I tend to overthink things.

As I said, it was just a thought.

Arrrrrrrrrrrrgggh! We are not communicating very well these days. I know you have no sour grapes, none of us do. I was talking about the impression such a letter might give and whether, if it did, the influence of the letter might be less than we would hope.

It was just a passing thought.

I have friends there and think the world of them, but the articles lately, about Obama, are starting to border on the vicious. Note: this post is meant as a reply to 4cats4, it seems to have ended up in the wrong spot…

Most everyone has noticed the negative turn hp has taken, a long parade of ungenerous, innuendo-ridden, often blatantly aggressive articles about Obama. That Ari has turned seems true; why she has isn’t clear, people can only speculate.

I suppose the most generous explanation would be that she at one time thought Obama was, candidate-wise, the bees knees, and is now so disillusioned with him (and whether that is justified or not) that she is throwing a virtual tantrum. As a way to express her disappointment. Hence the string of uncharitable articles about Obama.

(Some say she isn’t that involved in the kind of articles put up on her site, that her staff calls all the shots, she is much too busy. I say: whether she is or not, she is the boss and hence responsible for the content. For what goes up, especially on the Main.)

Others suggest (I saw this somewhere yesterday, sorry I can’t recall the poster who said it) that when she saw that Fox News was getting great ratings slagging Obama, she thought she’d try that herself. Go negative and see how that plays out at hp, traffic-wise. I.e. hit-wise. I.e. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$-wise.

Me, I’ve suggested that she might just be hedging her bets, that she might be thinking, for whatever reason, that Obama is a one-term president. And is therefore planning for the future…

I suppose the truth, as they sometimes say it, is somewhere in the middle.

As I said, I don’t believe he is weak, but only that he has somehow created that perception. Without intending to, obviously. And, as we all know, the perception, until it is disproved, is as good as the reality. He will have people in the media, but also, all around him in the Whitehouse, who will push and push and push…until he does something to let them know he is strong and not weak. I don’t mean something that would have him shooting himself in the foot, either. He doesn’t have to go against his own principles to do it, or capitulate; but he does have to do something.

I wasn’t suggesting, when I said he could veto the bill, that he should do that against his own beliefs and convictions. But if he wants to veto it, he should, and devil take anyone who doesn’t like it.

I sometimes think his tragic flaw is, or is going to be, his appetite for bipartisanship. His all-inclusiveness. Gordon Brown tried this and it was a total failure: the people he insisted on reaching out to…so much on the other side of the aisle that you needed binoculars to find them… ended up stabbing him the back. He was warned and would not listen.

Mercifully, Obama is 10 times brighter than Brown and will learn much more quickly when to compromise… and when to carve it in stone.

I think some of this MSM ganging up on Obama (and with sites like hp jumping on the wagon) may be in due, in part, to a false perception of Obama himself.

I don’t believe Obama is a weak president, but I do believe that he has somehow created that perception, and for as long as it sticks, and sticks around, he is vulnerable. He seems to be in some kind of freefall right now, because he surely knows that this perception has been created and yet he doesn’t seem willing to show, by his actions, that it is indeed a false one.

I am puzzled: the man I heard give that speech, the Nobel speech I call it, is not the same man who seems…SEEMS… almost overwhelmed by the po.wer of Wall Street and virtually impotent to get some decent health care reform. He is a young president, of course, and it’s his first year: he has to feel his way through. Even older presidents have to do that.

Even so, Obama needs to do something to re-assert his authority, something that will stop the bloodsport. (Like veto this HCR bill.) And he needs to do it quickly because if he doesn’t the media is going to eat him alive.
