Śambhu is also worshipped in Buddhist and Jaina Tantric disciplines. It is applied as an epithet of Agni, to one of the eleven Rudras, and to Brahmā, etc. I knew that book would come in handy. Also, Alain Daniélou has a good book called The Myths and Gods of India, which goes so in depth, your head will hurt at parts. Myths don’t have to cohere. There is no ‘one true’ myth – except depending on your tradition maybe. There’s like three major creation myths, for example. And the Kṛṣṇa of the Bhāgavatam is not exactly the same one we see in the Gita – for two prominent examples. Don’t worry about transliteration. I’ve gotten in the habit of using it because it is actually simpler when dealing with the Devanagari script. With Shiva, it doesn’t matter so much because the other ‘sh’ sound, ष, ṣ, doesn’t occur at the beginning of a word, so there will be no confusion if you don’t write ‘Ś’. —- Here I have to say, I would need to think about it thoroughly what it really says in the first paragraph (from the Dictionary). The problem I have is that the sources seldom agree on a thing – that’s why I didn’t study the stuff too much and am still struggling to comprehend the basics. You come across a source, it says a symbol means such and such, and the name means such and such, but then you go to another source and they attribute partly different meanings. So I try to catch those traits where they agree. And then I have never heard of shambu, the abode of joy – how can that be! I wonder if this is what is described in the Bhagavad Gita as something like a pre-heaven. Good people come there and stay for some time according to their karma, but if you’re still bound to the earth one goes back to take another birth from there (as opposed to be freed from any further births, moksha).
