Then if she refused to come out, bring in stand off negotiators. This idea of shoot first is disturbing because they are going to run into a situation, and have, where the person is disabled in some way or another. The police are trained for just this type of situation so I guess I have to assume they are now trained to shoot first, ask questions later. It is a very dangerous position to take and fuels people’s negative opinions of them. But I sense that these police forces these days do not care. Don’t get me wrong, I still think there are good police out there but I would sure hate to encounter some in a “questionable” situation. My family could be picking me up from a morgue too. » Posted By SueInCa On October 4, 2013 @ 1:31 pm Sally and Adlib I read through all the comments here and my first instincts on this incident was that, as unscrupulous reporters were saying, she had a gun and with a child in the car. My first instinct was that she put that child in the position of seeing the hail of gunfire. Then I saw the vid of the first encounter and the chase and I thought my God she could have figured she was going the wrong way and pulled in there to turn around and just accelerated too fast, then saw all the guns pointed at her(and firing) and she panicked trying to get away. Even knowing that the woman was mentally impaired and knowing she thought Obama was stalking her, I still think ramming the barriers was, in her mind, was her way of reacting to whatever was going on in her mind. I realize she was doing this at the white house and it is a serious matter, but to have so many cops with guns trained on her was probably a total shock to her and in her unhinged state, she panicked and tried her best to get out of the line of fire. None of us will probably ever really know what happened in detail but here is another case of mental illness that the family failed to act on and I have to ask, If they had had decent medical coverage, could this have been avoided? My guess is yes, they would have sought help for her but I can say from personal experience, if you do not have decent medical coverage, you will run into many closed doors or you will have people tell you it is in your best interest to pay the hefty fees. And that is unrealistic for someone who cannot even afford monthly fees. People outside this country do see us as a lawless nation toting guns all over the place and rightly so. I am also disturbed at the level of police violence that is popping up all over. At first I thought Occupy brought it out, but after seeing some documentaries lately, I realize the police have always acted this way. The walkouts in LA of the Latino students was met with police in riot gear. The EXPipeline protests are met with riot gear. The United Farm Workers protests were met with police in riot gear. Woody Guthrie and his organizing friend were met with sticks and other equalizers until they got the police involved, then they were met with the same treatment. The striking dock workers in Seattle and SF were met with police in riot gear. I could go on and on but the reason they do this is so they can say, the crowd started it and they were just lucky they had the manpower there to stop it.
