A young man that has been friends with my kid brother since they were young kids, and that I coached in Little League committed suicide this weekend. I cannot stress how much this bums me out. He was a good kid, that turned into a good man. He was a father of six that became overwhelmed by life with a cheating, long term girlfriend. I just returned from the viewing, and I’m completely bummed out. My family has known, and socialized with his for decades now, it was heartbreaking to see his mom just torn to pieces over the loss of her son. I felt like shit the whole time my dad, and I were there as we also had an appointment this morning with the brain surgeon that will be doing the Cochlear Implant on me soon. The 30 minute drive there really set my back off, only to have it continue hurting until I got home, and medicated for the first time today. On the Cochlear Implant front, it’s a done deal, just have to schedule the surgery. The doctor is considering putting the implant in my RIGHT ear which has been deaf since childhood. The left ear implant has a 10-15% chance of fucking up my balance according to him. The right ear may have gone too long without any input so it could be a waste putting it on that side, it’s been dead for so long, but on the flipside the left ear will be destroyed by the process so there will be no turning back or doing the other side if the left is unreceptive. It’s a coin flip really. I told him that HE was the one that went to school for 10 years so he could sign his name with a Dr. so I would defer to his judgement on what side would be best. If all goes well, a case could be made for a 2nd implant on whatever side doesn’t get the initial implant. I don’t know at this point. Had another round of hearing test with little to no improvement. The good news is that I did have a few moments of being blown away. During the hearing test, I could actually HEAR the woman giving me instructions! I was stunned to say the least. I don’t know exactly what the deal was but evidently running her voice through the machine and into the headphones allowed me to hear her speak. Unfortunately they were unwilling to let my dad and I leave with the machine… I have an appointment in March with a surgeon to plan the Cochlear Implant for my left ear. The main concern I have at this point is funding for the operation. I’m disabled, and have been for quite some time following my spine fusion surgery back in 2003. I have Medicare and collect my social security (thank goodness I had some well paying jobs over the years so my SS is pretty decent). The ENT doc said that Medicare covers the cost of the surgery, but I need to make sure, and figure it out if it isn’t 100% covered. We’ll see what happens, I told my dad that there was no way in hell I was letting him foot the bill or go into debt for it either. He’s done enough, and been through enough these last few months. Worse case scenario I can go beg for funds on a site like http://www.gofundme.com/ or something… I figure between giving away homes, cash, autos, televisions, and other items to those in need over the years, I gotta have some good karma built up right?
