I just read something in “The Bridge” of which I was not aware. Senator Obama did not vote to confirm Roberts to the Supreme Court, but Russ and a few other Dems did. Progressives were vilifying Russ on the left-leaning blogs. Senator Obama wrote a letter to DailyKos where it was published. This was in 2005. Senator Obama admonished DailyKos and others for vilifying Russ for the vote he had taken. From “The Bridge” – “The letter was entitled “Tone, Truth, and the Democratic Party” and was posted on September 30, 2005. After apologizing for failing to follow blogs “as regularly as I would like,” Obama wrote that he wanted to address “friends and supporters”. Obama said: “There is one way, over the long haul, to guarantee the appointment of judges that are sensitive to issues of social justice, and that is to win the right to appoint them by recapturing the presidency and the Senate. And I don’t believe we get there by vilifying good allies, with a lifetime record of battling for progressive causes, over one vote or position……. He went on to talk about the harshness against all opponents (or perceived opponents). He writes what he has witnessed from traveling throughout the country: “I think this perspective [anger and harshness] misreads the American people. From traveling throughout IL and more recently around the country, I can tell you that Americans are suspicious of labels and suspicious of jargon. They don’t think George Bush is mean-spirited or prejudiced, but have become aware that his administration is irresponsible and often incompetent. They don’t think that corporations are inherently evil (a lot of them work in corporations), but they recognize that big business, unchecked can fix the game to the detriment of working people and small entrepreneurs. They don’t think America is an imperialist brute, but are angry that the case to invade Iraq was exaggerated, are worried that we have unnecessarily alienated existing and potential allies around the world, and ashamed by events like those at Ab Ghraib, which violate our ideals as a country……. He further gave reasons why Russ and other Dems may have voted for Roberts. Read the book, if you haven’t. It’s fascinating and covers a very wide range of topics. I, too, go to the library just for the fun of it and I like the smell of books – old and new. I always reserve my books online. My library does the same thing. If a book isn’t available at my library, they will order it and email me as soon as it arrives. I went last Friday and got “The Bridge”, by David Remnick and a mystery by Walter Mosley. Maybe I’m just cheap, but if I like the book I’ll buy a copy for my personal library. I intend on buying “The Bridge”. Maybe I’ll even give it to my son to read – although I learned years ago not to lend out my books and music – you never get them back. Anyway, I highly recommend “The Bridge”. It’s fascinating. On the way I noticed many trucks carrying tanks. Our guide said that it had not rained at all in January. It usually rains Dec, Jan and Feb. The tanks were filled with water. Maybe those of us who have lived during peace as well as war don’t process the elimination of bin Laden the way some young people do. Young folks can be pretty exuberant. I don’t fault them. I just think they are young and see this as a real victory against terrorism. If they are around 20 years old then for 10 years when most became somewhat knowledgeable of the world, they lived with some degree of fear. They live with terrorism reported on the news. They go through security checks at airports. That’s all this is – a distraction. Something for the mouth breathers. Torture is ILLEGAL. The Geneva Conventions says so (which the US signed on to) and people have been prosecuted and jailed for using torture. All high level military and civilian investigators have said that information garnered from torture victims is suspect at best. To me, this is common sense. If someone is pouring water down your nose and throat chances are you will tell them what they want to hear. One of the major problems of prosecuting prisoners at Gitmo is determining whether they told the truth while being tortured. The MSM should go the way of the dinosaurs. The MSM is useless and in fact dangerous, IMO. However, I don’t think this was about President Obama and America being heros. Nor do I believe the President relished what he had to do. I’m not a pacifist. I think there are times when you must fight back. And I do not believe in turning the other cheek. Have you ever lived with terror? I haven’t. But I have relatives who tell of living in the South under the terrorism of the Klan. Can you image being afraid to venture outside your house AND to stay in your house; not having any protection from anyone? Knowing that you are never safe; nor your children or any of your loved ones? Terrorism is worst than just “evil”. It deprives people of the RIGHT to LIVE in peace. Those people, including bin Laden who take that RIGHT away from people are monsters. IMO, there is a valid reason for “hate” crime laws – these crimes are to evoke terror in communities or groups and not just individuals. Bin Laden was a terrorist. IMO, he got what he deserved. He lived for 10 long years after causing the deaths of thousands of innocent men, women and children.
