Greetings Zoot,

Loved your piece on willful ignorance. There’s a nice concept from philosophy of race (perhaps borrowed from another discipline) called “cognitive stop” and you’ve described it well. Breifly, cognitive stop occurs when an individual or group is so invested in a specific prejudice that no amount of evidence to the contrary will be accepted, if it is indeed perceived.

What is especially irksome about the “Obama is a Muslim” prejudice (and it is a prejudice), is that if we’re operating on “the values of the founding fathers”, then, in John Rawls’s language, positions are open to all. That is, whether Obama or anyone else is Islamic is suspended as a consideration for assessing whether they qualify for a position in public office.

The other phenomenon that irks me (and there is much abouth which to be irked, mind you), is that somehow the words “Muslim Brotherhood” in concert are taken to be defacto “evil” (and no other word will do) prior to even the most basic of research to learn about the creation, trajectory and activities of the groups so called. I say this not in defense or support of the brotherhood, but rather I say this in defense and support of being minimally informed.

The upshot is that I understand your pain. (As for me, I sometimes feel that my head will implode.) And, no, you’re not being a snob: we’re not all “okay” (as evidenced by the much of the psycho-babble/anti-intellecutalism in mainstream public discourse).

No problems, ref. misunderstaning–I don’t want to use ’em. The URL you’ve referrenced contains directions for how individual users can turn off the smilie feature…I’m just not savvy enough to go where they tell you to go…and so it goes.

Ooooh: I assumed “admin” referred to the administrator for one’s PC (in cases in which a password is used for access). Is there a code I can use in the text dialogue box as to not have my smilies turn into to (admittedly sunny) little yellow faces? *smiles*

I read the following (for turning off smilies):

1.Go to your Admin Panel
2.Select Settings -> Writing
3.In the Formatting section, uncheck the box for “Convert emoticons like 🙂 and 😛 to graphics on display”

But I haven’t a clue where to find the “Administrator’s Panel”–does anyone out there know? 🙁

Dusty, I agree that Fox News isn’t (a legitimate news organization–it’s pretty much a blatant propaganda machine). However, more than, “Why Billo?” I’m wondering, “Why Fox?” Fox clearly isn’t the only game in town…that is, why do you suppose Pres. Obama did not choose another network/program?

American Exceptionalism, American Nightmare

Very thoughtful piece & much appreciated. (I would add that, Palin’s depthless lack of depth notwithstanding, although U.S. institutions have their detractions, they also have their attractions…and being both black and female, I could name a few spots on the earth where being either (but esp. being female) has me thankful to be here rather than there.)

(That said, I’d rather be in Canada…but that’s a different thought all together.. *smiles*)

Out of curiosity, I just visited AOL’s news section–the selection of articles and writing leave much to be desired, and the comments are neither enlightening nor witty. Huffington Post had misleading, sensational headlines and moderators that zapped with no rhyme or reason, but (until of late) the politics and world tabs offered something of substance. Currently, however, the politics secion features one Democrat, the president, and the world section is being crowded with international fluff. It has been changing fast…with this impending merger, and given AOL’s track recorded, I’m assuming the worse (i.e., nothing much of substance and possible fauxnewsdoccom level of comments from readers).

(I’m usually optimistic, but… 😉 )
