A Short List of Pres. Obama’s Accomplishments

Good list, AdLib. I posted similar (but shorter) list a few months back on HuffPo amid a torrent of Obama bashing.

That said, there are some issues that remain more than unsettling, for example, the operation of Gitmo, the lack of single payer or public option for health care, and the like. It’s not so much “glass half empty” as much as clarity and an honest assesment of extent. (For example–and I care because I’m a single working mom–I’m not sure where No. 244 “affordable, high quality child care” exists in the U.S., but here’s hoping it obtains. *a smile and a wink* )

Oh, that’s interesting: I didn’t come across much sweetness on HuffPo–quite the opposite. Anonymity lends itself to bolder worse angels in my experience. On that note, I had the weird experience of being fanned after simply getting someone off my back…much to my embarassment.

I don’t know…it was fun, of course, but there was a dark side to the whole fanning thing, IMO.

In any event, if you know anything about me, you know that I’m sweet…until I’m not. ;0)

Gotta go for real–don’t want to get the axe for incompetence.

…yes, Kalima, you’re definitely on to something. I think that was problematic, the “popularity contest” aspect of fanning. (Some people explicitly panicked when they lost fans which, for some reason unbeknownst to me, I found embarrassing for the person lamenting.) It was very clever on the part of whomever came up with the idea–it got people hooked.

Computers = easy outsourcing abroad. (Could be cultural disconnect more than not knowing English per se which, given the work, would be necessary to know to a certain extent.)

Gotta say, I’m glad that there’s no “fanning” here at the Planet. Something about that was very “high school”…and a draw to get people to comment more than they would have otherwise.

I probably shouldn’t admit this, but on Huffington Post I had a difficult time keeping up with who was who except for a few popular posters who were posted regularly. It’s much easier (for me at least) to get a sense of people’s personalities on the Planet.

I was usually interrupted during posting any way…as I am now–the little guy needs help out of the bathtub…and I’ve gotta start on the French toast. And so it goes! *smiles*

I have a question about the Planet (as opposed to a comment about HuffPo–so perhaps this belongs “there” instead of “here” *smiles*): I’d like to discuss articles written elsewhere on the web in this forum (as opposed to writing articles myself). Is there a place here to do that, namely, cite an article, write a bit of lead commentary (nothing necessarily deep) about the cited article with commentary from Planet members to ensue?

Welcome to the Planet, Chic.

I have to say, I didn’t bother to look at the HuffPo 2010 Xmas photo although I did in 2009 and was quickly disillusioned not only by the photo itself, but the fact that any commentary regarding it’s racial and age composition was first deleted and then, after a few days, simply not posted. Reading the comments, you would think that every reader found the group utterly to die for which simply wasn’t the case. The dishonesty was appalling.

Regarding progressives’ and/or liberals’ cacophony of voices, that in iteself seems simply to be the case…not many groups are without diversity (which is fine with me on general principles). I do agree with you, however, about utopian dreams–that realpolitik is, well, real; and I agree that the “Puma a la Hills” people surely need to grow up, get over it and move on. (The SOS certainly has.)

That said, elected officials are accountable to the people that they represent. On that note, although I’m against criticism for the sake of criticising, I don’t hold (nor are you saying, as I read you), that any criticism of the current administration is treacherous per se…there are genuine concerns that should be voiced.

The upshot: A bit of recognition and praise (from all sides) would be in order and welcomed as well as criticism, and to the extent that it is missing from public and political discourse is the extent to which the brow beating is distasteful from the point of view of integrity and honesty.

Hmmm…better get back to (other) writing before the kiddo wakes and demands to be fed!!

Cookies are devine although my taste in cookies, as do my taste in flowers, run towards the pedestrian and old-fashioned: homemade raison oatmeal and black-eyed susans. (I’m currently munching the former while looking at the snow in my garden wishing, instead, to gaze upon the latter.)

I followed you, as well. (I just now removed my HuffPo profile after copying some comments I wanted to save. What gave me the final “push” was someone who disagreed with me, which I don’t mind, using abusive language, which I do mind and of which I am tired. The whole “tit for tat” is not necessarily spirit murder (to use Patricia Williams’ phrase) , but it certainly doesn’t add to the quality of one’s life.)
