Then towards the end, it adds: “If you are a socialist liberal and/or voted for the current campaigner in chief, please do not take this class. You have already proven that you cannot make a knowledgeable and prudent decision under the law.” And then: “If you are a non-Christian Arab or Muslim, I will not teach you the class with no shame; I am Crockett Keller, thank you, and God bless America.” The ad ran for six days on KHLB, Mason’s local station. It’s also been heard tens of thousands of times on Youtube. West Virginia senators Joe Manchin and Jay Rockefeller promised an investigation on Wednesday into whether Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) tried to influence the Big 12 into inviting Louisville over West Virginia. “If these outrageous reports have any merit — and especially if a United States Senator has done anything inappropriate or unethical to interfere with a decision that the Big 12 had already made — then I believe that there should be an investigation in the U.S. Senate, and I will fight to get the truth,” Manchin said. Turns out that Manchin might need to investigate himself because according to a report, he and Rockefeller both tried to influence Oklahoma president David Boren to accept West Virginia into the Big 12 — just like McConnell is accused of doing with Louisville. CBS Sports reported Thursday that Manchin and Rockefeller had both been in contact with at least Boren before Wednesday’s public decrying of McConnell trying to use his influence on the situation. If true, Manchin and Rockefeller would both come off as extremely hypocritical for publicly blasting McConnell, while privately doing the same thing. But should it really shock anyone that two United States senators might be a bit less than truthful? The mess between Manchin, Rockefeller and McConell serves as an example of the many issues plaguing not only college athletics, but this country in general. The last thing that college athletics needs is for government officials to start getting involved and sullying up the NCAA even more than it already is. One could argue that college administrators are idiots and have no idea what they are doing, based on some of these realignment moves; and those people could make a fair argument. But why would anyone have faith in people that have failed to accomplish a myriad of goals in Washington to suddenly fix the issues in college football? It makes perfect sense why all three senators would get involved on behalf of their state schools — millions of dollars of sense, in fact. A move by either Louisville or West Virginia could be worth as much as an additional $10 million to each school, according to one report. No government official wants to see the home state schools get left in the dust and lose out on a lot of potential money. But no one cares what Manchin, McConnell or any other politician thinks about college realignment. There are plenty of more pressing issues for a United States senator to concern his or herself with than college football. These senators need to let things play out as they will and let the Big 12 decide on whatever school it feels is the better fit for its conference. It could be Louisville — that’s Oklahoma’s preference — or it could be West Virginia. Realignment has been dominated by conferences attempting to secure the best television markets, even if that school wasn’t the strongest fit athletically or geographically. It’s the primary reason Missouri and Texas A&M are going to the SEC. Realignment has often made little sense, but the absolute last thing needed is a senator or two to throw in some government investigations to make it even more confusing. It is bad enough hearing academics justify conference affiliation changes as a positive change for the “student athletes,” when the travel times on average actually increases. So to any other politician thinking about jumping into the fray in order to get a school some consideration for expansion — I’m looking at you Chris Christie and Dannel Malloy — don’t. At Morehouse in the 60’s there were three kinds of guys: The Crusaders, who marched with King and who wanted to change the world; the Academics, who dreamed of new learning and great discovers; and The Suits, who set about making a career that enriched them and their families. For one group, it was all about social justice. For another it was all about knowledge. For a third it was about prosperity. Of course motivation is usually mixed and many who were Crusaders were also Academics. But my friend tells me that only a few Suits were Crusaders. These men tended to grow up in very traditional lower middle class families who wanted their kids to move on up. They told them to work hard, avoid distractions, aim at a successful career, keep their heads down and avoid upsetting those who could be of assistance in getting a leg up. So Cain never marched. Cain fell into conservative circles. He worked in the civil service for the Navy and then moved into the business world. His career has been based on judging where the unsuccessful were making their mistakes and then correcting those mistakes. He did it for the Navy, for Burger King, for Godfather’s Pizza. He carried those principles into his work as a Restaurant Lobbyist, as the chair of the Kansas City Federal Reserve Board, and as a member of the boards of Aquila, Inc., Nabisco, Whirlpool, Reader’s Digest, and AGCO, Inc. In the last 10 years he has continue to spread his belief about as a motivational speaker, a talk show host, a syndicated columnist AND as a part of the Koch Brothers Americans for Prosperity political lobby. He became a front runner because the people who were supposed to be continue to disappoint. He is not ready or able to be president but neither are the rest of those in the GOP field. But, at least he is consistent. He is a true believer in the Gospel of Hard Work and Prosperity.
