I don’t know of any blog of note that allows guests to post without subjecting their comment to moderation…and at very busy blogs, possibly never getting around to publishing it. RESPONSE: I suspect my experience with guest posting is old. I spent a little while last night surveying the blogs I frequent and no guest option. Personally, I won’t post at blogs that moderate comments regardless of the post’s content. Not only does it make having a conversation with anyone impossible, it betrays that site’s lack of respect for people. RESPONSE: I really like this at the Planet. And it seems to work here. But I think that this is the result of your very strong standards and commitment to bounce the denizens of the trolling underworld and the close community here. And such things as HP’s blacklist of words, using any one of which automatically sends posts to moderation is a convenient but pretty unprincipled practice. RESPONSE: HP is having big problems. I am hanging in there because it has a huge place in the blogging world. But its moderator system is not working. There have been several articles in the last two weeks that were inundated by comments that were defamatory, incendiary and just downright nasty attacks. The word list is easily gotten around. NO AI software can do what needs to be done. I think there are entire “shops” that have HP and Politico on their list and just smoke both sites. If blogging is about an exchange of ideas, then conversations and ideas need to be able to flow freely. And whether that’s disrupted by a deluge of spam and hate speech or by blocking comments from being posted immediately, it undermines the ability to have conversations. RESPONSE: Do you have any thoughts as to how the big sites can deal with the issues you list? I have a way of bringing that info to the attention of those who can pass it on to those who need to hear it. Which is why most blogs choose to ask people to register so they can host real time, non-moderated conversations without spammers and trolls hitting and running with their garbage to disrupt the site. RESPONSE: The big sites require registration but they are overwhelmed with spamming, and trolling. Again, your wisdom on this would be very welcome. Registering for a site to leave a comment is a commitment. You give someone else your e mail and other info. You interact with their admin system to set up an account. That often takes a couple of steps if nothing goes awry. If you do not want to do this, then you don’t leave the comment. I know I have done this in the past. I read alternet and rawstory regularly but have yet to take the next step.
