» Posted By Khirad On October 24, 2021 @ 6:06 pm For the record, that wasn’t the scene in The Crow – it was more mundane actually. That actor never worked again. It wasn’t his fault at all either. He just carried that guilt. Again, I’m working on cussing so much, but FUCK is right in certain circumstances. I’ve known gun people. I’ve been around guns. I know they hire people to deal with that who are gun people. Gun people know safety. How does that just happen? Again, I could construct a conspiracy theory, but … I’m still just … WTF? I wasn’t the only one who thought of Brandon Lee (and it was the Funboy death scene) I don’t have a subscription to WaPo but… I whenever I feel crazy, it is nice some people think just like me… or is it? I dunno, this unique and The Crow is in my top five favorite movies, so I immediately thought of that as soon as I saw the news. https://www.washingtonpost.com/history/2021/10/22/brandon-lee-alec-baldwin-prop/ » Posted By Khirad On October 24, 2021 @ 4:01 am I still secretly hope you’re Michael Palin nonetheless. » Posted By Khirad On October 24, 2021 @ 3:50 am I echo everything you said, kesmarn, but I am not a Boomer or Gen X or a Millenial. I’m this weird gap born in 1979. I literally (and how I hate how gen Z is using that word – see Weird Al’s Word Crimes) grew up with the PC. I thought Oregon Trail was a local game. I never got dysentary, but (I have a piece I’m working on about growing up in the other, original Vancouver). It’s just like I’m so jaded and no shit. Roman philosopher’s were talking about this in Latin, et cetera. And … like, duh. I’m never not sarcastic. Unfortunately, I’ve seen people in even my gap generation change. Like, I’ve got my issues, but at least when I self-medicate I know it. I believe Ad Lib shares the same affection I do for Black Mirror and maybe Doctor Who – like the stuff that asks the bigger questions. I am cognizant of Facebook, and got out of “debates” with cons after Trump. Ad lib said this elsewhere about nastyness. Like not Ad Lib, but other commentators have said the same thing: it’s not about policy, or even owning the libs, it’s just a glorification of being mean. And I’ve never been mean, and am very tongue-in-cheek – I’m the sweetest Satanist you’ll ever know. But everything has become so crass. I felt like a fuddy-duddy at first, but again, when I saw my online friends … everybody is so guarded and sensitive. My best friend in High School was a Rush Limbaugh listening lapsed Catholic who now runs a gun store. Granted, we don’t talk much, but even he will like an occasional post. [And, I was a misanthropic goth who refused to stand for the anthem in German class when we had school announcements – and he would be like, at least stand up – it was the under god thing for me more than hating America]. Later, I was in charge of school announcements… I always had a face for radio and was in A/V club. Anyway lost my train of thought. But, again, my parents are still alive, by the grace of whatever, and I’m thankful for that. So of course I don’t hate old people. I’m hanging out with my dad tomorrow – and should get some sleep. Sarcasm and irony is dead. That’s my facebook “byline” I’ve always been really great with authority. [That was a SAR-CAS-TIC statement] » Posted By Khirad On October 24, 2021 @ 3:41 am I know we can’t play their game. But it’s infuriating to me that they keep playing with their guns. They say it’s a 2nd Amendment right, but I say it’s intimidation. Plenty of liberals have guns, I don’t own one (I can barely make rent! – those things are like at least a month’s rent) but I was taught how to shoot a rifle and still could – and would have the sense to know how to use a side arm [there’s a great Bill Burr bit on why he has a .22 not a .45]. There are too many of these commercials, but there’s that Idaho Lt. Governor who recently assumed the powers of Idaho when the Governor was out of state (and this is Idaho, where outside the Boise State Campus and downtown is ruby red, and she outdid the aready conservative governor – Idaho, it’s like Alabama, but without all the black people and a lot of meth) and this new candidate in Nevada. We even remember Manchin doing it, and I thought that was cringe but folksy for WV. My only thing is, if you remember my left guns meme, is that we could play that game too. But whenever a person of color or libral has a gun, the people with 90% of them get scared? Like… in my George Carlin voice: Ho-ly Shit. Wow, the level of un-self-aware privilege… Oh, when I do it it’s wrong? Sorry about that snowflake. And also, if there is a woman here who could post on the Palin effect? I am not qualified. There’s been a few here in Arizona – thankfully, not elected – there seems to be a thing about women and guns and bibles and stuff. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXvnt_xhZmI
» Posted By Khirad On October 24, 2021 @ 1:22 am In the following boxes are similar flags, most are current flags of UN recognized states. Given there are 193 recognized nations you have a … well, I’m into flags, not math. I’ll make this one easier. I might save the other one, as I that was pretty hard. They are all similar. In each box we’ll say 1 and 2 for left and right. I’m not going to make this too easy, but I’ll give every answer in alphabetical order. Just mix and match. The answers: Chile, Costa Rica, Côte d’Ivoire, Cuba, England, Georgia (Republic of), Haïti, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Liechtenstein, Netherlands, Niger, Paraguay, Poland, Puerto Rico, Republic of China (Taiwan), Samoa, Texas, Thailand. https://planetpov.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/flagquiz2.png » Posted By Khirad On October 24, 2021 @ 12:35 am Technically, she resigned after trying to get fired so she can sell the victim card. I’ve been on their end making calls for the Democratic Party in Arizona. And, she’s been having resignations – so they are listening. » Posted By Khirad On October 23, 2021 @ 9:39 pm I would have also accepted Alabama on B-3. Other than getting overly technical they are arguably the same thing. D-3 is a little weird as at the last minute I replaced Florida with another flag. I figured the seal with ‘state of florida’ might be a little too easy. Although, it can be argued that Florida is not the St. Patrick’s Cross but more related to C-1. Anyway, I’m proud you got Scotland, but St. Patrick’s cross is obscure other than being part of the Union Jack. Even the de facto flag of Northern Ireland uses it. The Irish certainly never did. But yes, it is far more difficult after this. But good for you not falling for my Confederate false flag or the scuba diver’s false flag. I want to give more hints, but give others a chance, though, yeah, those were the easiest – though kudos on Nova Scotia! Flags have a certain logic sometimes! » Posted By Khirad On October 23, 2021 @ 9:35 pm I’ve been on a deep dive with the remaining monarchies of the world. And there are different types which deserves its own post. I mean Saudi Arabia is literally named after the house of Sa’ud. Arabia existed before that, and I’m not getting into the various regional kingdoms before that, but it would be like saying Windsor England. In any case, the arguments for tourism and all that are bunk. But, I do come across people that are just emotionally tied to it. I think we can keep the pomp without a Royal, and the House of Lords are an absolute joke, as well. At the very least abolish that first. There is no reason for them to exist. » Posted By Khirad On October 23, 2021 @ 9:24 pm There are two very good YouTube channels I follow and who have the same obsession I do with religion as not a certain theological vocation, or even purely anthropolical and sociological focus – but on what I hesitate to call comparative religion. If you had – and some did – asked me what I wanted to be when I was sixteen, I was off my fifth Nietzsche book – even found a collection in German at Powell’s in Portland [which a little gargoyle has sat on ever since this day]. I would have said I wanted to be a philosopher, and yes, I was that space cadet – ADD. Totally focused in the most inpracticle things that intrigued me. As part of that, I’d read my dad’s KJV Bible he had from his Southern Babtist upbringing, with his name embossed on the front, that fake black leather with a gold zipper with a cross. I was totally devoted to Christ – treasured my sterling silver cross necklace we got after I asked to go into he Christian bookstore in the mall. The story of how I lost my faith is it’s own long story. But I became interested in Junior High, after meeting different people, and getting a library card to go downtown and check out books on other religions. I’m gonna ramble forever here, but let’s say I have hundreds of books on religion. If I had all the money in the world I’d study religion – it’s been my passion. I did become an atheist and would joke with my friend who had my experience but from a Norwegian Lutheran rather than my nominally Presbyterian mom and very lapsed Southern Baptist dad. We would yell at god in the sky until we looked at each other and were like: what are we mad at? I think a lot of atheists never had the revelation we had had when we were barely 17. If you don’t believe, what are you mad at. So, I forgave all the bad experiences I’d had with some Christians, and realized – though it’s not for me – they aren’t all bad. Of course, among all my books I have Dawkins, Hitchens’, Sam Harris, Bertrand Russell, Asimov, but I’ve gotten more out of Mircea Eliade, William James, R.C. Zaehner, and of course, Joseph Campbell. The first three are, for lack of a better word left-brained, linear, literal and rigid. They can’t appreciate the numinous experience, though, Sam Harris, with neuroscience can appreciate it and advocates for Zen Buddhism. However, in a debate with Reza Aslan – I had atheist friends saying he crushed Reza, — and I just thought Sam Harris didn’t understand the metaphor and mystery of religion. They were talking past each other – it was frustrating, but Sam Harris came off worse in my opinion – because Reza understood Sam, but Sam refused to listen with that binary arrogance and hubris famous of Scientists and Mathmeticians. They were almost even saying the same thing! Dawkins, is another, – almost Aspergers level type. Like, got in a debate with Brandon Flowers of The Killers, a band from Las Vegas who was also Mormon. Like, I and we can all crush – it’s not even worth my time – but Dawkins, instead of just letting it go, berated the poor guy. A time and a place, dude. Situational ethics, Dr. Hitchens gets religion all wrong – though I’m none the worse reading him as he was sharp and erudite. And, I’ll throw Maher in here. It’s not they are arguing against religion that upsets me, it’s that they’re sloppy and lazy and I have WAY more persuasive arguments for their points and straw men, because I’ve studied the subject and religions more than you. I don’t deign to write a book on evolutionary biology – I trust you and the science. So, I begrudgingly call my self an Orthodox Agnostic Universalist [intentionally ironic – when I do attend church, It’s Unitarian Universalist Congregations which Hitchens warned of for backsliding… I dunno, studying Satanism lately, is that backsliding into superstition? (it isn’t)]. Because, if we are to just get Max Weber with the sociology of religion – to be sure, I am wary of organized religion – but also countenance the Persian saying that a knife can be used to murder, but also in the kitchen to feed. It all depends. With all that ado, here are two channels on religious studies that I highly recommend. Religion For Breakfast with Dr. Andrew M. Henry Let’s Talk Religion with Phillip from Sweden working on his thesis on West African Sufism, bcause of course – but the channel covers all comparative religion One of these guys or another one even did a snappy and accurate appraisal of modern Satanism. That’s why I’m a Unitarian I like bouncing around – and Unitarians encourage finding your own truth, even – and especially – if it is no one else’s. » Posted By Khirad On October 22, 2021 @ 2:41 pm Stephanie Coward after JUST one short post of mine referencing how he’s scared to debate banned me. Can we pick this place up somehow? Like I’m the poor, but Jesus, I have to be the youngest person here. I don’t need constant interaction, but… discourse at least 2-3 times a day? Don’t be a victim of your own inaction. A lot of people show up on Friday and don’t post the rest of the week. How do we change this? Because that is bullshit. I – no offense – can smell the old people home smell. I love my elders, but can we spruce this up? This is a place worth saving, but feels like it’s in palliative care. » Posted By Khirad On October 22, 2021 @ 4:43 am I can’t remember have I written about Scotland here? I feel like I must have. But if not when the time comes, I will write either way. It is a heritage I feel very strongly about. » Posted By Khirad On October 22, 2021 @ 1:41 am I’m aware it’s still covid, and Queen Elizabeth the First of Scotland [very deliberate with the FIRST part], but with presenting the Crown of SCOTLAND [before the Union of Crowns with King James VI of Scotland and King James I of England] – even in the clammiest of Scottish weather – with the Scottish Parliament being dominated by the Scottish National Party – it’s a bit chilly? You should have seen when David Cameron tried to adress Holyrood before the last Indy Ref. The SNP doesn’t have a firm position on the monarchy, and I’m fine so long as it’s cool. It would be hard to bring back the Scottish monarchy, and while Queen Elizabeth is just the FIRST of Scotland (Q•E•I of England was before the Union of Kingdoms – I hope I’m clear?), it would be King Charles III should he assume the throne (as Charles I was after the Union of Crowns under the Stuart dynasty). I digress. Monarchy or not, get a feeling for the room, and tell me I’m wrong. I’m not saying I can’t be wrong… but the monarchy is at best really passionate in Scotland with a minority, but mostly tepid. Not outright hostile, but indifferent. She’s basically the Queen of England to me – and good for them. I don’t hate her, I just don’t see a need for it.
» Posted By Khirad On October 22, 2021 @ 1:27 am I thought it would be fun to have a flag quiz, but I started at the way advanced level. There is at least one flag you better get, and a couple others. Denote your guesses as in row A-1, 2, 3, 4; B-1… and so on. I’m such an asshole I just you play. You’re not stupid for guessing, I repeat; I’m an asshole and some of these might have stumped me. And IRL, I have a lot of German ancestry. So, I want to get that out there. But, I hate irredentist Zionists. I get Bibi Shapiro’s schtick, but Bari Weiß masqueraded as a liberal Democrat for so long. I’ve known Jewish Democrats like her. In Israel they would vote Likud. So, don’t play me. » Posted By Khirad On October 20, 2021 @ 5:46 am Caitlin Doughty is my secret girlfriend. So secret she doesn’t know. Okay, I’m not a creep, I just adore her. Her channel, ‘Ask a Mortician’ is another favorite of mine. She digs deep into history – like the truly real dark story behind Moby Dick, D.H. Lawrence, or that time a dam broke and flooded Los Angeles and a lot more thoughtful pieces. And yes, she is a real funeral director and does that stuff too – answering all your death questions. Anyhoo, William Mulholland, the self taught engineer from Ireland and… he still has a drive named after him.
» Posted By Khirad On October 20, 2021 @ 5:10 am I actually heard about Zelli. I booked an eye exam at a Walmart eye center [laugh, but they’ve been good before] for next week. It will cost $70 out of pocket, but I haven’t had an exam in at least five years, and while my eyes are blue like my dad’s, my eyes are possibly worse than my mom’s, and I’d try lasik if I could afford it – but I have severe astigmatism – so. It’s ironic in the Alanis definition of ironic – that I’m ADD and my eyes can’t even focus together (that’s what astigmatism is – like your eyes focus indepentally – the right does not know wha the left is doing – and it’s not painful – just annoying because I’m near sighted and cant even read, I used to). Long story short, I need a eye exam for a new Rx. I could be could at this Rx, but, five years ago I thought the same thing and tried my old glasses on and it gave me a headache. Anything is better than nothing, but, might as well, my eyes are not getting better. I can’t imagine how people survived before glasses. I’m not blind, but everything is super blurry. I lost my train of thought. I just hope y’all help me try out frames – and my dad – god bless him – I hope he’s there for them not to try to sell me frames there. Plus those dilations… Thanks all. Hopefully all works out so I can complain about Covid and how I’ll need a passport renewal to afford dental care in Nogales, Mexico. But, again, the face is not a part of the body screamed my abcessed tooth a few years ago. If I were rich I would honestly have you root canal everything and cap it. I can deal with it, don’t have to knock me out, just numb me up and drill away. But, that’s another problem. As to my ears, they are big and I’ve been a drummer and in the pit at concerts. I’m not deaf, just a little tinnitus hear and there! Miraculously, it’s my big ass ears that are fine. » Posted By Khirad On October 20, 2021 @ 1:57 am Just off the hand, and I’m sorry about ragging on boomer music. It’s more like this that I’m done with it. Like, when I was in my last pipe band, of course everyone requests Amazing Grace, because, I don’t blame you – you don’t know pipe tunes [not do movies like the Departed – playing Scotland the Brave at graduation for an Irish-American film – I mean we get along fine with the Irish and they with us, but there’s a difference – we’re close cousins, but…]. Not a grave sin. A bagpipe skirls and I’m happy. But, the joke was: oh, Amazing Stairway to Freebird again. And so when I make fun of some old tunes, it’s not because I hate them, but because I hate them being shoved into my ear sockets. The fact that they were prolly cool at one point but, you’re sucking out the last tannins of tea as in a Russian novel by Dostoyevsky with no irony. Born to be Wild, Bad to the Bone, pretty much any AC/DC and my brain shuts off and wants to leave. Again, that shit was awesome the first million times.
» Posted By Khirad On October 20, 2021 @ 12:01 am This is another one. I know I’m your favorite Satanist, Unitarian and whatever I am today, but this guy is an atheist, but he’s an ex-Jehovah’s witness, so most of his content is more about cults and not anti-Christian or any other faith. He even wants more people of faith, as I do, to join us heathens against batshittery. Anyway, we all know Michelle Bachman Underdrive – but, he’s worth checking out. He never goes full on Atheist Experience [and speaking of right-wing progressives, Christopher Hitchens died unapologetic for supporting the invasion of Iraq].
