Displaying 0 To 0 Of 0 Comments A Mandate for Civil Disobedience A while ago, I stated that the mandate stunk to high heaven. This is still the odious part of this or ANY healthcare bill (I will not call it reform any longer). And now Nelson wants even more restrictive measures against low income women pertaining to abortion. I actually hope he DOES filibuster and this bill fails. At least then we can start over and try to pass it piecemeal by piecemeal rather than overreaching and trying for the whole ball of wax. Never in the history of the United States has a government tried to MAKE it’s citizens buy something from a private industry or face a fine and even imprisonment. This is tyranny of the highest order and an affront to all freedom loving citizens. This entire effort, while laudable in its desires, has turned into a total defeat of the legislators and a better than now solution for the insurance companies. This bill, if it passes, will turn me away from the Democratic party. I remain ambivalent about this; I see the arguments for both sides being valid. I think this whole thing stunk from the beginning, an overreach by the Democrats, raising expectations then deflating the balloon. The demise of the expansion of Medicare is another disappointment, an ever bigger one for me since I thought it was a better way to go than a watereed down public option, which I never liked. So now, we have only a few crumbs, but no one has mentioned the mandate, which I also feel stinks, especially without an expanded Medicare or a public option. This could turn out to be a real boondoggle for the insurance companies if the mandate stays. I’ve been preaching that throughout the Holiday Season, that as individuals, we may be helpless in the big picture, but we can make a huge impact on the part of the world we CAN control. Every act of kindness has a rippling effect; I see it in the eyes of the homeless we are helping at the Grand Central Neighborhood, not only providing shelter, clothing and bathing facilities but also counseling them to find ways out of there. We have to hang in there and keep believing and not give up. I was dead set against the mandate, as I saw it as nothing but a boondoggle for the insurance industry, and I see people have now come around to that thinking, based on the poll you did. It’s ironic that what really killed this bill was the distrust of the government by the people. You can add me to that list, but for an entirely different reason than the cretins who oppose healthcare reform in any form. What’s left of this bill still has some good things, but this could have been done without a 1000 or 2000 page bill that was clearly an overreach from the get go. The demise of the single payer expanded Medicare option would be extremely disappointing, it’s now hanging by a CBO thread. In some ways, we have no one to blame but ourselves, as voters. George Carlin talked about the stupidity of the American voter, and what the people of Connecticut did in first jettisoning Lieberman in the primary, then electing him in the general, is a prime example. Our HP relationships are very complicated, and you, as the moderator of this site, have to deal with it. Person A and Person B may be the best of friends, but person A hates Person C but Person B is all right with Person C. You, as moderator, cannot be the referee. In order to have a truly great site, people should not have to pass a litmus test. This is not a private country club or a small, narrow Yahoo Group with strict entry reuirements. I think you’ll find an ebb and flow, an evolution of visitors and regulars. This is what happened at HP. But if some say they are going to leave because someone they don’t like is going to post, then this site cannot be held hostage by that person. I dont’ play games, I am who I am and KK is the only sock I have ever had. I deal with each person on a one to one basis. If you playact as a woman, I deal with that character one on one, in isolation to FM or any other sock you use. If you want to play a game and get your kicks that way, by all means, do so. If you are friendly with 3 out of 4 socks, I deal with each of your characters on a friendly basis, and if the fourth is hostile, I deal with it differently. I can’t keep up with the sock changes and that’s the only way I can deal with it. So, if you feel you pulled one over on me, so be it. Brownie did the same thing, so did Seek, dey, HITO, LiberalRayne, and a bunch of others. We all have different relationships with each other. For instance, I have had no issues with Brownie, it has always been on a friendly basis. I stayed out of the brouhaha with dey, HITO and Seek, as I am on friendly basis with each of the protagonists. The same applies with AC. I don’t think it’s very open minded of any of you to say you’re going to leave if a certain someone posts here, but that is your feeling and as I said your experience with certain individuals is a different one, and I respect that. But this site won’t grow in stature if we turn it into a clique, which I’ve heard the HP crowd referred to. If people are not allowed to post because of what happened at HP, then this site will be manned by a few and there won’t be much incentive to come here. Therefore, I agree with Keven and AdLib.
