At this point something very extraordinary would have to happen for him to come back. I even think a good debate performance would not help him much because anything he says that’s not consistent with the 47% video would fit the meme that he says one thing to one audience and another thing to another. Worse if he is every bit consistent with the 47% video that’s political suicide. 2. I’m still weary the expectations game will be against Obama. I don’t think Obama will make any big mistakes but he could play it a bit too safe. I just hope he gets a good deal of rest before the debate because that’s the only way he could look bad. I remember one debate with Hillary where Obama obviously did not get enough rest before hand and he struggled a bit because he got a little ‘ah’, ‘um’ and ‘you know’. Also that was the debate where Stephanopoulos turned the debate into a gotcha game. Someone tonight said Obama does not suffer fools well and it could show in a debate against Romney but I’ve never seen show any bit of condescension in debates after Obama flubbed up once and said Hillary ‘voters like you enough’ or something to that effect. 3. This is probably the best question because it’s an unknown on a presidential scale at least. But here again is one major Obama strategic victory over Romney this election. Obama hit Romney hard with ads in July and August than he would worry about fundraising when he had a lead. Of course the DNC was another huge positive good ad for all the Dems really. This strategy obviously worked and while Romney kept his powder dry it’s just too late to run a barrage of negative ads now with so many people’s minds made up that they don’t like Romney. Frankly I think outside ads have shown less efficacy than I thought they would. Most likely because they are more obscure. It just seems like SuperPACs on the right and left get a bit too clever by half. And it does mean something when the actual candidate endorses the ad instead of some group many on both sides are not familiar with. Most of all the SuperPAC ads just aren’t precision coordinated attacks they are more like launching scuds at the competition. I have to disqualify myself a bit because I don’t live in a swing state and have only seen a fraction of the ads some other Planet folks have seen. I have to confess I answered the questions before reading you comments so excuse me for any overlap. You bring up some great points and ironically I do think Romney’s ceiling is around 47%. I think you will see more votes for Gary Johnson in states like CO and NM for example that will splinter Romney’s numbers a bit. As mentioned, we have a ways to go before Election Day and whether or not Romney closes the gap in the polls, Obama can’t win re-election if people don’t get out there and vote for him. So schadenfreude at Romney’s self-destruction may be enjoyable but enthusiasm to volunteer, contribute, help get out the vote and vote oneself is what’s most important to achieving the re-election of President Obama. Hear! Hear! The only real way Obama could lose this without something catastrophic would be complacency and apathy. The Romney camp looks more and more desperate each day and president Obama is the king of the long game in that he let’s campaigns disintegrate on their own. In elections since 1988, only Bill Clinton, in 1992 and 1996, entered the fall with a larger advantage.
