Christchurch Earthquake – A First Hand Account

Here’s its website, by the look of the building it will have almost certainly have been put out of action. I tried ringing the number given but it sounds either like it has been disconnected or is not working.

http://www.harbourlight.co.nz/What's%20On.php

I’ll be here still in April but I’ll definitely like to come and have a few drinkies sometime. I’ve had Herradura before, a bartender recommended it, it was quite smooth compared to others if I remember correctly!

We’re back to normal in a way. We have power, and water back on, it’s back to normal pressure now. Because I don’t know anyone directly who has died it hasn’t affected me in the way it has others. I feel bad for the people in the eastern part of the city who haven’t got power or water back on yet, some haven’t even got portaloos in their street yet which is a bit poor from the authorities. There are I think 10,000 chemical toilets on the way from China but it’s 10 days since the quake and some people are living in conditions that aren’t that hygienic. Assurances have been given that everything is being done but for people without any services life is pretty unpleasant for them, especially if they have children to look after. Definitely makes me appreciate living with all the services working.

Tequila? I’m there!I shall definitely keep you mind.

It’s likely the Harbourlight Theatre will have been damaged. 80 buildings in Lyttelton have been affected. It probably won’t be on there but I’ll keep a look at for him if it is rescheduled for another time.

I might try cinnamon in a hot chocolate here, I’ve had cappuccinos with cinnamon on top 🙂

Thanks for your thoughts and prayers. Tell your friends it’s fine to fly into Christchurch, there are places to stay in the western part of the city which are fully operational with water and power back on. If they need anything let me know or if they want to know some information and I could meet them or help them out. The rest of the South Island is completely unaffected by the quake so they should still be able to get around as normal.

Mexican hot chocolate sounds interesting, I have visions of it containing hot sauce! I’ll have to get to Texas sooner rather than later! If you ever feel like coming to New Zealand let me know and I can give you an itinerary so you can see all of the best places in the time you would have, and a drink of hot chocolate or something stronger will be in order!

We have an Earthquake Commission which covers some of the cost, and if people have private insurance they will be able to claim on that. The damage to the land has to go on their legal title, or LIM report at least, and I doubt they will be able to get reinsured which will have big implications for the value of their property. In the badly affected areas it could be deemed that it is not viable to rebuild the infrastructure and houses and that whole areas will have to be abandoned. Very sad really.

The liquefaction problem in Christchurch will probably be the biggest concern long term, new buildings will be built to the standard which the ones that came through the quake in good condition in the center of the city, but the land in the eastern part of the city affected by liquefaction is so large it will probably be simply not viable to rebuild on the land. What if hundreds of millions of dollars are spent fixing all the services and it happens again? Large parts of Christchurch used to be a swamp so it was always going to happen in a big quake, they shouldn’t have been built on in the first place but that took place a long time ago.

Here are some photos that show the liquefaction in the suburbs, now that it is dried out it is being blown about quite badly by the strong winds we had today

Most new houses came through ok, a few didn’t, but most damage was to older houses that were in the older parts of the city

Here a couple of photos showing the dust rising over the city center from the fallen buildings

Thanks for the best wishes, Australia has had some bad natural disasters as well, big floods, the Queensland cyclone just past and some big bush fires, I think the Victorian ones a couple of years ago were particularly bad

Good to see you Dutch, I haven’t been on HP much at all. I was going to go on there tonight and tell people about my article here. Thanks for best wishes.

Too true, you sort of busy getting on with life and then all of a sudden you’re in a situation where you have to rely on just what you’re got at hand. Being prepared will always pay off, and it doesn’t take much really

» Posted By HotChocolateParty On March 2, 2011 @ 2:34 am

Both of countries have taken a few hits lately, with your bush fires and massive floods. We had 29 miners die at Pike River mine last year and we were hoping that would be it but now this. We appreciate your Search and Rescue people helping and the 300 NSW police coming over. Thanks

I’m close to the southern eastern end of Harewood Road so that’s quite amusing! I think the amount of people admitted to hospital was less than 200 so we were lucky in a way that it wasn’t much worse with the amount of building frontages that came down. Out of 2,600 buildings in the CBD 800 have been condemned, 1,200 have damage and might be able to be saved or will have to be pulled down and only 600 have been give the all clear. Your cousins are probably in the best place at the moment, some suburbs of the city are almost like normal with power and water back on but the city and east has been wrecked. With the center out of action the city seems quite restricted in a way.

Thankyou for your kind message and the support you offer. We have had a lot of that over the last week and it is comforting to have other people concerned for you.

8.6 magnitude would be massive, you wouldn’t want to be anywhere near when that happened, the greater the magnitude the longer the duration of the shaking so that would cause huge damage, one thing we were lucky with is that even though the shaking was severe the lower magnitude of 6.3 meant the worst of the shaking didn’t last very long.

Thanks for your thoughts, everyone I know directly is ok, others haven’t been so lucky. Hopefully this will be it and there will no more losses.

You raise a very good point I should have included. If you are inside take cover under a desk, dining table or door frame. People survived by taking refuge under their desks.

The families of the deceased and missing were taken to sites where their loved ones were caught. It’s good to hear of people living through the CTV building collapse, it was the worst collapse in the city. There could be repercussions because it shouldn’t have been occupied, the building was groaning and creaking which is a bad sign something is wrong. The government has announced inquiries into the CTV building and PGC building as to why they were given clearance to be used.

Thanks for your thoughts and prayers

If you decide to come across get in touch and I’ll show you around. You’ll have to go to Queenstown,Wanaka and Fiordland. Queenstown and Wanaka are pretty touristy but are very beautiful and there are a lot of activities to do. Fiordland is where you can experience the best of New Zealand’s magnificent splendor, there are parts untouched since the last ice age.

I’ll extend that offer to anyone else here, if you would like to come let me know!

Celere, out of respect for the others is it me you are referring to? We locked horns over Obama but I think you have taken things a bit far.

I do not hate Obama. I voted for him and recognize he has done some great things and unless there is another viable candidate (which is extremely unlikely) I will always vote for him over any Republican (of course). My problem with Obama is that he has done nothing or tried to do anything substantial which will prevent a repeat of the crash we have just had. The banks are the greatest threat to this country and look who he has in his administration!

I don’t think this is an unreasonable position to hold.

What I also objected to was a handful of posters ridiculing and putting down liberals who dared question Obama, as if the site was for 100% Democrat party faithful only (I’m not the only one to have seen this in action and others agree with me).

If there is any animosity between us it will probably fair to leave it at the other site and perhaps it could be best if we just avoided engaging in each other? What do you think?

Politics Daily (owned by AOL) has full moderation where every comment gets screened before being posted, if they do that HP will be finished, it was annoying enough when it happened but with every thread what’s the point?

» Posted By HotChocolateParty On February 8, 2011 @ 2:07 pm

It was the same for me on the AOL thread, they wouldn’t let me post anything, I’m still on HP but if it turns for the worse I’ll be gone. I think a lot of people are going to see how it turns out.

If they annoy people who comment there much more they will loose the very thing that gave the site all of the hits and ultimately gave it its financial value
