The MSM can’t do too much in-depth reporting because the vast majority won’t understand it at all! This is part of the reason that people have not risen up against the corporate machines that run our lives. They are fed pablum by the media, along with “American Idol” and “Keeping up with the Kardashians”, feeding their silly fantasies about becoming a rock star or a millionaire! And we can’t forget a steady diet of gratuitous sex and violence! It’s hard to get people off the couch and out from under a big bowl of buttered popcorn on WWF night to protest inequities when many of them don’t understand what inequities we face. However, I’ve got some mixed feelings about these trade deals. I really don’t know much about the details, but in the past, it seems that the USA always gets the short end of the stick. I have been thinking of writing a piece about what has happened to us since NAFTA. It appears that with globalization, instead of other countries being pulled up to our level of prosperity, we are being lowered to their standards. Our wages have been stagnant or declining over the past 10 years, and the future is really uncertain. As the economies of India and China roar ahead, we are sinking. Our manufacturing base has been disappearing with some 58,000 plants being shuttered and jobs sent overseas. WE are the ones who are paying for the globalization…that is, all of us except the executives of the large multi-national corporations. They’re doing just fine! So when the issue of trade deals comes up, I am cynical and suspicious. He now writes the answer to the question that many of us here at PlanetPOV have been asking…why do the middle-class and poor people in this country vote against their own economic interests by voting Republican? “The fundamentalists have replaced economic and political justice with a bogus (and hate-driven) “morality” litmus tests of spurious red herring “issues” from abortion to school prayer and gay rights. The result has been that the masses of lower middle-class and poor Americans who should be voting for Democrats and thus their own economic interests, have been persuaded to vote against their own class and self interest.” Mr. Schaeffer goes on to say that the RW fundamentalists have painted the government as “bad” because of its stand on gay rights and abortion…therefore, all government is evil! The words from the pulpit have immense power to convince those low-information voters to vote against themselves.
