But I have already had my share of living in poverty, thanks very much! 🙂 I had the wonderful pleasure of visiting St. Maarten last January on a cruise. OMG! It has to be one of those most perfect places! I was completely done in after I spent time there. Half French and half Dutch. You hear several different languages spoken. The beaches are divine and the weather gorgeous! The people there were so nice too. I visited a total of five islands, including St. Thomas, St. Croix, and Antigua. But St. Maarten stole my heart! I would have to admit that St. Croix comes in a very close second. Absolutely beautiful with the French influence. Kinda’ reminded me of the French Quarter in New Orleans in their little towns. I’m not jetting off just yet. Waiting to see how the elections come down. If somebody like Rick Perry is elected, I’m off! You always have a way of providing context for me, and no doubt, for other readers too. Yes, unfortunately, I believe you are right. But that “final blow” you mention seems to be coming very close, very quickly…and I don’t like it one bit! We are accustomed to our government moving slowly. That has always been the nature of the process. It takes a long time to turn that big ship around, as the President said last year. Checks and balances have always given us a sense of stability and a reasonableness to the process. Nothing, not even in the most dire of emergencies, should be done rashly, but instead with thought and reason, discussion and debate. Now it seems that things are flying by us, that issues are brought up and voted on to pass laws that the people do not want, laws that only benefit the special interests. Amendments are added covertly to bills. Laws are enacted in after-hours sessions. Agreements are made behind closed doors. The checks and balances are falling by the wayside. You know that I am no fan of SCOTUS and especially after their Citizens United ruling that is disenfranchising all of us. But to give Congress the power to overturn their rulings is so wrong on so many levels. Where, then, is the ultimate power to sit? The repubs are calling President Obama a “dictator”, but we all know that he has very little power with the current make-up of the three branches. Congress seems to be trying to usurp ALL the power, and this is frightening. Some of the people in that body are less than qualified to even be there, much less than to make laws such as this. I know that this idea about the courts is just grumbling from Newt and the others, but I’m afraid that some of the baggers will get big ideas. We on the Left have an incredible battle in front of us, just to hold on to what we have gained. When we look at the entire picture of the repub agenda, it is almost overwhelming. But the difference here, as I understand it, is the kind of oil being transported through this Keystone pipeline. According to what I’ve read, the carbon emissions from this type of oil are much, much higher than with the crude that we pump from say, the Gulf waters or regular oil wells. Environmentalists have been screaming about this being “the end of our climate” because of the drastic increase in greenhouse gases from it. Apparently it is very, very dirty stuff! It is also more expensive to process, as I understand it. The Ogallala Aquifer has been depleted, as CL mentioned below. Is pumping this dirty stuff across that area and running the risk of polluting the major source of water in the middle of the country worth a few more millions for the big oil companies, including the Koch brothers? They seem to be the only ones who will really benefit from this. As I wrote earlier, at some point we will have to put our collective foot down to force the change-over to clean alternatives. Are we going to make it worse before we make it better? IMO, it’s time to say NO to Big Oil. They can continue to pump from the Gulf as they have been doing, realizing some pretty good profits. They don’t need to ruin the middle of the country to make more bucks! They are doing just fine without the tar sands variety. This process generates two to four times the amount of greenhouse gases per barrel of final product as the “production” of conventional oil.[3] If combustion of the final products is included, the so-called “Well to Wheels” approach, oil sands extraction, upgrade and use emits 10 to 45% more greenhouse gases than conventional crude.[4]” In addition to the dangerous emission levels, it takes vast amounts of water to extract the oil from its base. It must be “diluted” with lighter hydrocarbons to even allow it to flow through a pipeline because of its thickness. They have ONE and only ONE position, cut taxes, cut spending, and drown the government, and they are doing such a great job of it! Paul Krugman has been saying the same thing for the past two years, mainly that this is the wrong time to cut government spending. He has held that the government must continue to spend in the short-term to prop up the private sector until it can recover. I certainly don’t know much about the economy, but he has always made absolute sense to me. There are some things that the private sector cannot do, such as building dams and bridges, the highway system, and airports. These always have been and should be government projects, and projects that could certainly help our current jobs crisis. This is only common sense. But we get back to the nitty-gritty of the problem. The rethugs are never going to pass anything that might make President Obama succeed or look good.
