And you are correct about Vietnam. Kennedy didn’t want that war. Johnson was the one who caved in and let the hawks have their way. I have no illusions about JFK. He was a total cad. However, he did save us from nuclear destruction. I guess he can’t be given too much credit for that, but whether or not he was a great leader still remains to be seen through the long lens of history. Three years in office might not be enough time to really assess his impact. I do believe that he had every ability to BE a great leader. I have often wondered where we would be now if he had not been assassinated. I don’t think that we would have been in Vietnam for all those years, losing 55,000 troops! As for Chris Matthews, I am pretty fed up with him. Enough about the damned book already! His fawning over his republican guests like Pat Buchanan is disgusting. They would not dare to have written about JFK’s dalliances, the same way that they protected FDR and his physical limitations from polio. There was an unspoken rule that FDR would not be photographed in his wheelchair. In fact, many people did not know of his polio. Can you imagine that being the case now?? It was such a different time. Our political figures were really up on pedestals. Of course, there were criticisms of their policies, but the personal attacks and destructive ads just didn’t exist as I remember it. I believe it’s just going to have to take a HUGE effort before the election next Fall to educate voters in the repub controlled states. This is one area where DFA and MoveOn could really be a big help on the local level. At least there will be no changes in NC for now. Our governor was able to veto their bill for restrictive ID laws. Apparently they didn’t have enough votes to override her veto, so they have given up for the time being. I would not, however, be surprised to see them try it again in the next session.
