There are very few people in this world that I genuinely and intensely dislike, but Eric Cantor is one of them! I disagree with everything he stands for! He is a disgrace and makes a mockery of our values of helping those in need! I hope that the DCCC and the Democratic Party in Virginia will use this in the up-coming campaign against him. How ironic…to accept funds to help first responders deal with natural disasters, he is demanding cuts to first responders! Idiotic at best! On the jobs bill, the repubs have really gotten themselves into an untenable position. They can read the polls and they know that they are going to have to play ball on this one. The next few months should be really interesting to see how they are going to position themselves. I noticed that the American Family Association was mentioned in this article. If I’m not mistaken, aren’t they considered to be Dominionists? While I didn’t see any familiar Dominionist names in this article, I am sure they have their fingerprints all over this push to get their faithful to the polls. Considering their agenda to elect conservative Christians, it’s hard to tell who is a Dominnionist and who isn’t. The AFA website is just the usual propaganda with lots of emphasis on their anti-gay position, followed by an appeal for dollars. But if it looks like a duck…. I can just imagine the outrage from the RW if the IRS actually does enforce the law! And just who would report violations of the law to them? You bring up a good point…that some people think that a change of administration is a good thing. President Obama may not be enforcing aspects of the Patriot Act as his predecessor did, but as far as I know, the law is still on the books. That is the dangerous part…that repubs could take over and begin “exercising their prejudices” all over again! IMO, the sooner we repeal the Patriot Act, the better, although I don’t expect to see this on the agenda any time soon. It’s a shame that Russ Feingold is not running for re-election. We need his voice in the Senate as one of few advocates for the protection of our rights! It is sobering and shows just how quickly our rights and freedoms can be taken away. It also shows that once those rights and freedoms are taken away, it is so difficult to get them back. With no limits written into the bill, we can expect to live with this for a very long time. It shows what happens when people are afraid. It shows that not even our elected officials are immune to irrational fear. We expect them to represent us, using level-headed and reasoned debate, but it is obvious that even our Congressmen and Senators can be manipulated to summarily dismiss some of our most basic rights with no thought on how to restore those rights. It is as if the Fourth Amendment has been stricken from the Constitution without even as much as a blink of an eye! I remember those days just after the attacks. Suddenly it seemed that if one criticized the rush to Bush’s “war on terror”, one would be called a traitor to the country. I remember that feeling of paranoia that I had not felt since the Vietnam era. It used to be that “if you’ve done nothing wrong, you have nothing to worry about”. With the passage of the Patriot Act, that no longer holds true. You can be arrested and held for your “associations”. Even Greenpeace was mentioned! How many of us here may have inadvertently been associated with or donated to an organization deemed “terrorist” by some over-zealous Justice Department lawyer? I applaud Russ Feingold for his defense of our Constitutional rights. Let us hope that he and others like him can once again bring some cool-headed decision-making back to Congress. The Patriot Act should be repealed and provisions re-written to protect our rights while still going after those would would harm us.
